Ransom IT started offering KVM VPS services earlier this year, and their popularity has remained high, so Oliver has invested into some new servers. Their servers are using either the E3-1240v2, E5-2603, E5-2620 or Opteron 4274HE CPU; along with numerous disks in RAID 10 or a SSD array (no auto backups included). Ransom IT has been trading as a discretionary trading trust since June 2008 (link) and have been featuring on LowEndBox since early 2012. The bandwidth allocation is per month. Previous reviews have all been pretty good.

RansomIT only accept payments through Paypal. According to Oliver, refunds can be provided if you’re unhappy with your service or if problems occur, but you mustn’t have breached their TOS and got terminated. TOR exit nodes, game servers, hosting pornographic material, spamming, hosting copyrighted content or doing anything that infringes Australian law is not OK. IRC is fine. For more information, take a look at their Terms of Service.

Used to provide more bandwidth, used to have 100 Mbit port and not just 10 Mbit. The new offer seems crappier on all fronts, except for the SSD gimmick.

When did we provide more bandwidth? All our past offers offered significantly less bandwidth in total.

The previous post had 120+40=160 GB bandwidth, and not just 100 GB.
Also it was on a “Shared 100mbit Port” rather than “10Mbit Uplink”.

My bad, I see what you mean with regards to our last offer but that unbalanced arrangement was not as popular and most customers have preferred equal 1:1 type data plans.

    • We would also prefer a faster port speed. It would be better to charge more and offer higher netspeeds and bandwidth.

Maxing out my 8Mbit connection, but is the lg the same speed port/setup as the VPSs with 10Mbit?

      Yes it is.

Awesome, also in regards to the connection…

        Pings:
        Adelaide SA – Home ADSL2+: 39ms
Portland, Oregon – Home fiber: 209ms
        LA, California – Server: 187ms
        Dallas, Texas – Server: 220ms
        Jacksonville, Florida – Server: 262ms

For reference, “google.com” from the Adelaide SA connection, ping average was 41ms.

It is not often that you get better pings than google in this price range.

I think Google and many other big content providers are at Equinix in Sydney. Our provider (Colocity) peers with them directly so latency to these large content providers in Australia is quite good.

  3. I voted for Liberal and Green. One of the reasons is I don’t believe this NBN shit anymore. Look at the bandwidth. Even the “third world” China is using 100M fiber. I’m not commenting on your service. I’m just talking about the internet in Australia.

Does the location make you have to pay for the most expensive internet in the world while get limited bandwidth and shitty speed? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8rPRtYe3C0M

If you consider that a submarine cable from Australia to the nearest country with better infrastructure (Read: Hongkong, Japan or India) costs usually around a billion USD – Yes, that does justify some cost of it.

I wouldn’t exactly call China “third world” in terms of either its economy or its technological innovations. It’s first world on both accounts…especially in comparison to Australia, which may be why China has 100M fiber and Australia doesn’t. :)

I’m just joking mate. I came back from Beijing, China to Sydney a few days ago. My adsl2 at home is the same, hasn’t been changed. just feel a bit strange after I used the 100M fiber from my friend’s home in Beijing. lol

  4. @Ransom IT “a SSD array”
I don’t understand what this words means. SSD RD0?RD1?orRD10?
Can you explain this question? thank you.

“along with numerous disks in RAID 10 or a SSD array (no auto backups included)”

The explicit RAID 10 is probably the, “7200rpm SAS drive, in RAID10” like a previous offer

And the SSD array…The “no auto backups included” might point to RAID 0?

      September 7, 2013 @ 11:58 am | Reply
      • Maounique:

No auto backups included cannot be linked with raid 0. It does not say no redundancy included, it simply means they will not make a backup in another location (server) for you and has nothing to do with the node’s storage.

        September 8, 2013 @ 1:22 am | Reply
        • Ransom IT:

Exactly right Maounique. All drives are in redundant configurations on our servers in either RAID1 or RAID10.

    • Ransom IT:

These SSD based plans are on a node with Intel SSDs in RAID10. Definitely not RAID0.

I’ve been with RansomIT for over a year now. I started out with their OpenVZ plans and I now have 3 KVMs with them (including one of the 1GB RAM/15GB HDDs from this deal).

Oliver has been fantastic, great to communicate with and I get great speed from New Zealand to Adelaide. All the VPSs I’ve had have performed well. If you’re hosting at this end of the world I recommend them.

    Excellent service.

Just wanted to put in a good word for Oliver and the Ransom IT team.

I registered for my first VPS yesterday. I had a few queries which I sent via the contact web form and Oliver replied to me incredibly quickly.

Payment was processed and the VPS was instantly provisioned. Performance has been good.

Not even low end game servers? (ie. Minecraft / Terraria via Mono)

    • Daniel:

Terraria is a memory Hog, its stores the entire level in memory, my 1GB server (Athlon 3200+) could not run it last time I tried, it runs everything else I throw at it (L4D2, CSS, Killing Floor, Minecraft), in fact you’re probably better off running an FPS engine and not a highly dynamic world like Minecraft or Terraria since sending chunk info is expensive network wise.

Hi – does anyone have a web site set up on one of these servers so I can do some browsing and get some idea of the responsiveness? I’d like to try a few if available.
