I’ve tried them for something like two days… Updating the VPS was a pain but downloading from the VPS was fast. I canceled the VPS after finding out that they use OpenDNS DNS’es in their resolv.conf. Besides that, they set up the VPS was pretty pretty quickly and answered emails fast too.

  3. Haha. I use OpenDNS for some of my low end VPS because some of the providers here can’t even keep a recursive resolver running online all the time.

Yes. Tried to change it but they would always go back to OpenDNS. Downloading updates and stuff from the box topped at something like 20~200KB/s at best while I could download stuff from the box at full speed (2.4MB/s). Canceled more because the IP they gave with the VPS was in a shitload of blacklists and had been hard banned (no mail going to the mailbox) from Hotmail and it had problems going to my yahoo mailbox (mails were randomly refused by their server). Not really good to use as a test box for an outsourced mail server. I just canceled and didn’t ask for a refund. can’t care less for $2/3. I just checked the IP that came with the VPS against spam blacklists and it’s in only 1 blacklist now.
An amusing thing is, mails sent to Gmail always landed directly in the inbox.

“updates and stuff from the box” = “updates and stuff using ssh/wget from the box”

  6. *sniff* All those years in grad school wasted. The ‘dr’ gets left off. *sniff*

Gotta admit that I find these folks to be a dodgy host. They post every few days on the DP forums changing their offer slightly to get around the “no dupes” rule over there.

I’m not a big fan of OpenDNS. My local library uses OpenDNS and I find myself trying to access too many sites that are blacklisted by their users for the wrong reason.

Their history of blacklisting is also a concern for me. I had one of the ev1 servers that got blacklisted years ago for them hosting a spammer they wouldn’t boot.

    Thanks

  7. Haha. Sorry I wasn’t too sure whether it’s the PhD kind of Dr. or medical type of Dr. so I left it out :P

I usually use OpenDNS as quick hack when the provider’s DNS resolver totally stuffed up (or having something like 1 second for each name resolution!) I use it to quickly get myself back on the net so I can `apt-get install pdnsd` and run a local resolver :)

Hope these guys are better than BurstNET, because my VPS in Scranton from BurstNET goes down every 2 or 3 days.

Digital point is a stinking cesspool of dodginess and all round web quackery, low-balling and dishonesty. The fact that they advertise there primarily is indicative enough (hint: you won’t see respectable firms advertise there), and also would you want to share a server neighborhood full of god-knows-what from 100’s of digital point desperados ..spamming, scamming, phishing ,link farming..ugh

Digital Point, back in the day, was pretty good – when it only focused on SEO/SEM-related stuff. Then the market place got invaded by dodgy people so I wouldn’t touch it with a 50 foot pole. Too much noise and not enough signal, as it were.

As such, I’d be very hesitant to order/buy anything advertised there.

  11. I had a vps with ServerWow for a little over a month. In that time, it was offline twice, for up to 12 hours at a time, I was double-billed (but they did resolve it quickly), and now my server is gone completely, permanently. Their response:

    Hi

We have had notification from burstnet that the server has been terminated due to abuse which is news to us and beyond our control.

We have contacted burstnet but have not had any reply as of yet. ( Aprx 2 Hours )

We are able to offer two options at the moment.

    1. a refund
    2. a new deployed vps on the hypervm control panel which would be active within 10 minutes.

I sincerely apologise for this and at the present time we are limited to anwsers on the issue in hand.

    Kind Regards,
    Pete

    I asked for a refund.

  12. Update: I did get my full refund, for the entire time I was with ServerWow, within minutes of requesting it. It seems the guys are trying, but unfortunately, I cannot host my stuff there.

  16. I bought this package based on this article and the purchase was smooth. I got a confirmation email accepting my order and PAYMENT but WITHOUT ANY SERVER DETAILS except for a link to the control panel which does not WORK. I waited 24 hours and nothing. I sent several support tickets asking for the server details. Zilch. Nada. I have asked for a refund. No response. A week has passed since the order was made.

I’m not affected but wasn’t surprised when I saw the following:

    Dear Customer

Over the last week BurstNet have pulled several servers with reasons due to abuse and other issues un be known to us. All servers have been paid for in full however these servers remain offline. We have contacted BurstNet on several occasions regarding their actions and to do our best to get these server back online. We have not had a single reply from them.

All I can suggest at the moment is to submit a paypal claim for a refund to be issued. Due to the nature of Unmanaged vps servers / hosting services this excludes a backup solution or options we can not be liable for data lose.

We are incredibly sorry things have turned out the way they have but the circumstances around the problem is completely out of our hands. We shall put this down to a business stunt on their behalf to do with compertition ( offering the same service )

Under no circumstances have we been out to scam and do people out of money. The issues around this problem is purely as described in this email.

    Kind Regards,

    ServerWOW

  19. I got an email from them just like @agreen got and did as they suggested which is to ask for a refund claim via paypal. The good thing is, serverWow gave me my refund very quickly. I guess, they are at the mercy of BurstNet.

  20. ServerWOW forced by BurstNET to post what was really going on with the termination. They were

    – not taking care of rogue users
    – not paying the bill
    – not following Burst’s terms and services

    http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpost.php?p=6548836&postcount=20

It was posted 3 hours ago, and they promised “In the next 30 minutes we will explore avenues to try and turn things into a posertive outcome”. Any updates?

  22. LOL. There are plenty of dead providers featured here over the past 2 years. This just adds another one to the ever growing deadpool. Time to move on!

Edit: The two NS for serverwow.com (adjacent IP address from BurstNet) has just been taken offline. It’s now really in the deadpool.

I tried to buy the package earlier this month but thanks to MaxMind that automatically rejected me with a fraud alert due to the geo where I come from.

Blessing in disguise… or maybe its the Christmas spirit… dunno…

Anyway, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year and may god bless us, all boys and girls who work their fingers to the bones for a living… Amen…

  27. Darren Slade is a scammer – turns out this is not the only hosting company he has run that has gone belly up and they lied in blaming BurstNet see here: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=900503
Never deal with this scammer – he is NOT refunding and will simply steal your money.
