TopXen - $6.89 128MB Xen VPS in Germany

TopXen Ciprian from TopXen notified me about their Citrix XenServer VPS packages starting from $6.89/month. “Tiny” can be ordered with this link, and the plan detail:

  • 128MB memory
  • 8GB storage
  • 20GB/month data transfer
  • Citrix XenServer 5.6

Servers are in the Leaseweb Datacenter in Germany (test IP: 78.159.105.167). Company is founded in 2008 and is based in Romania, according to the about us page. However WHOIS information is protected, and the domain has only really been created since November 2010. AUP here where they explicitly allowed IRC and BitTorrent. I guess the attractiveness of the plan is very much limited by its 20GB/month data usage, especially these days you get 500GB/month – 1TB/month at that price level. We’ll see.

Yes but, LEA, the 500 to 1tb ones are overselling nuts. As a genuine user of low end boxes, 20gb is more than enough for most legit users and it’s great to see less chance of overselling at this rate.

Nice to see a host that actually respects the price of bandwidth!

    • I agree with this, all my VPSs combined have used less than 100gb so far this month. (most are tracked though the host’s panel, but one has a broke meter so I installed vnstat)

i agree with this too. 20GB are enough for large part of honest uses. I bet that top bandwidth users are torrenters/rapidleechers and other bad neighbors trashing disk and abusing cpu and all resources. When i buy my vps i prefer offers not appealing to such users, so +1 for such low limits

    • Ha I don’t deny 500GB-1TB range would be highly oversold. There is still a big gap between 20GB and 500GB though.

I’ll say 20GB is probably enough for secondary MX, backup NS or end point for web services. It would be a bit stretchy for websites.

I think the 20GB/month its a bit to low for the price they are asking for this VPS, sure it is a sign of now overselling but 20GB/month is nothing nowdays.

  3. I applaud the company for keeping the 20GB bandwidth limit. ESPECIALLY because they are taking the risk of ALLOWING BitTorrent. If you are going to come right out and say — torrent away, then you need some serious bandwidth to give away OR a low bandwidth limit to keep the abusers away for the most part. Yeah we’re all a bit desensitized about bandwidth now but let’s put this into perspective.

Our KVM nodes — they average out to use ~65GB bandwidth TOTAL for ALL CLIENTS monthly. So before you go saying “I won’t host there because I need 1,000TB of bandwidth a month” — think about how much you will ACTUALLY use and not what you want. If you are being offered an outrageous amount it’s probably because the network is oversold and you will never get to use it all anyways.

Good for you TopXen, good luck!

    • I have to agree but gotta admit that I feel 20gigs is too low as well. Heck, a full site back up for my personal sites is about 1.5 gigs. Once a week will eat up 6 gigs right off the top.

the dr should have known that!

        • Full site, not incremental. :)

Was just a usage example anyway to show bandwidth adds up quickly.

But thats how we live, i have a VPS with 600GB Bandwidth month and there was only 1 month where i used 1GB of this 600, but we live for the “stats” and to “show of” even if we don’t use it. Company’s have to learn to deal with what you call “overselling” and i call using un-used resources instead of wasting them, thus making more money and making the monthly fee lower.

In conclusion, 20GB transfer month remains way to low even if we are being realistic.

      • Just want to clear up that having un-used resources does NOT mean you have a host that is overselling. When a host gives every client 2TB of bandwidth and all the clients have 128MB of RAM — I’d bet you that if every client used the full 2TB of BW the host would be crying due to their own overages. Now 600GB BW is reasonable depending on the plan…

BUT — if you are EXPLICITLY ALLOWING BitTorrent on your network… you need to have some serious limits which WILL scare most away. This is one of the best ways to cut down on the hours of time you would spend dealing with laggy networks or anything else that pops up simply due to abusers.

Stats are good — but in comparison to a car. What’s the point of saying you’ve got a engine in your car that can push 600 HP if it won’t even turn over and run. 20GB is completely fine if you don’t use that much bandwidth. Especially for LOW end boxes.

Well i don’t know if i can considerate my VPS “lowend” in terms of specs, so 600GB is about fine for it.

    • Okay. Maybe hosting customers should get realistic. In some sense the “cloud” model might actually be preferred (EC2, Rackspace Cloud) — I only pay for the amount I use. At $0.10/GB for example overage, with 0GB of monthly data included.

      • Doesn’t that screw the host then in the end? I mean I know what it costs me to put a box out for a given month. Having all the clients on a single box come in low for a month makes a box unprofitable. It also doesn’t cover support costs. For me, that’s a flat rate per client per month.

Those costs are spread around fairly to the clients. Granted some are going to use more than others but if Ms. Norris gets her ceramic Chinese poodles Gallery install slashdotted, she knows that her costs are covered for the most part instead of worrying about how she’s going to pay for those extra 25 gigs in traffic in a 2 day period.

20Gb is too little, 50GB perhaps (in-line with the other ratios)…

…but @ +24% Romanian VAT you can forget it.

    • ASCII pr0n would use less than 20GB/month I bet. Unless you run tube sites of ASCII pr0n :P

  6. Hello all!

I must say “thank you” for the clear and unbiased and how do you say, “objective” blog entry about our offer. I was expecting this article to come a little bit later but it’s great that it did now.

Lots of comments, I must thank you all for checking our site and I want to take this opportunity to give replies to everyone.

First of all, we removed the whois protection for the domain, it’s very normal to have the data open, I wasn’t paying attention on that one.

Second for the age of the domain, indeed it’s kinda new, we tested various virtualization platforms last year and it wasn’t until in the late stages that we bought the domain. We offer virtualization since last year, so in this niche, we’re new. Give us a chance and we’ll prove to be good partners, expect some hiccups in the short-term future, but know that we’re dedicated to this business.

About the AUP, we allow IRC and torrent usage, however under the current laws. However torrent usage clearly dictates more BW, and even though BW is cheap, it’s not free and the biggest price is the performance of the nodes as some of you clearly put before me.

The small BW comes from another package of 64M that was initially our ‘tiny’ package, and we thought that whoever needs a small mail server, or dns server or anything else that could fit in 64M could benefit from an even smaller price tag. The product was not that much requested and we changed the values accordingly, except the BW. The BW should have been 50G/mo. and I personally believe, any small site or irc/mail/dns/mysql/whatever server that can properly fit in 128M RAM and have good performance, works just fine under this BW condition.

Of course, these are base packages, if you guys need more BW, the price that we have for 10G/mo. is $0.4

We are considering a BW upgrade with the datacenter to unlimited and that would allow us more options but good things can’t be done over night and this should be properly tested before offered to clients, see how the machines handle it, how the network works etc.

Thank you Patrick Garman for the kind words. We will need luck and chance(actually in romanian language there’s a better word, and that is “spor” and there’s no direct translation in english – when someone says “spor!”, he means “may you work very well and with very good results”).

@fugoki: BIG mistake on our part, that VAT is only for Romanian customers. It was improperly setup, changed now, thank you for noticing and saying!

@美国旅行: yes we allow legal adult content on any package, but the ‘tiny’ package might be a little bit ‘tiny’. PM or mail me so we can talk some details.

In conclusion I must say that everything I wrote here is my opinion only, don’t flame me for having a different view. Also I want to underline that we’re new in the VPS business(I work in the hosting business since 2001 but Innovo Consulting company is registered in 2008) and we’re oriented on quality, not quantity, and this will be reflected in our services and our prices. We know what’s important for you, current and future customers and our work will always be towards achieving your business goals.

If you give us your trust, we respect and cherish that, and you always get what you pay for with TopXen.

My final word is: Thanks for the comments, keep them coming!
