VDS6 - $1.95 128MB FreeBSD IPv6-Only VPS in Germany

VDS6 Igor from VDS6 emailed me an interesting offer today. It’s FreeBSD — it uses BSD jail rather than hardware virtualization to get FreeBSD 8.2 running on amd64 platform. It’s also IPv6 only, although the website itself does exist on IPv4 so you can still browse and make purchase on the v4 network. Their low end offer “v128” is $1.95/month and it has

  • 128MB memory/128MB swap
  • 2GB storage (not including system files)
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • 5x IPv6
  • FreeBSD

Payment in either PayPal or Webmoney (Z). Servers with Hetzner in Germany (test IP: 2a01:4f8:150:1102::ffe). Domain was created in October 2011 so there isn’t any review out there. The fact that it’s FreeBSD + IPv6-only would ensure it stays as a niche product. IPv4 wasn’t even an available purchase option when you sign up.

  2. Interesting! I wonder what are the intrinsecs, pros and cons of these BSD jails =)

    December 10, 2011 @ 4:30 pm | Reply
    • Cons: no tun/tap/fuse interfaces
Pros: FreeBSD consumes less memory per application compared to Linux. So you can run more applications on your server.
You can also use it for IRC related needs.
Easy to use and setup ipfw rules.
Easy to read and comprehend FreeBSD handbook.
And, SSH over IPv4 network. SSH over IPv4 – means that you can SSH into VDS/VPS even if you don’t have IPv6 network at home.

    • Actually it’s easy. For this we have created SSH over IPv4.
Explanation: SSH over IPv4 – means that you can get into VDS/VPS even if you don’t have IPv6 network at home.
Here is a small howto login over IPv4 network: http://vds6.net/bsdstart/

IPv4 network is available inside VDS but some ports are blocked on the outside.

      Thank you.

It might help if you gave some other urls about your company, with info about its past activity. Guarantees about the future are harder to take seriously if there is no known past to extrapolate from.

We measure the one you use to most.
You can do 95 Gb incoming and 100 Gb outgoing. So in our case its not going to be 195 Gb total. It’s just going to be 100 Gb outgoing.

  13. “IPv4 network is available inside VDS but some ports are blocked on the outside.”

So, at the end, we can put services in ipv4?

    December 15, 2011 @ 7:20 am | Reply
    • IPv4 network is available inside VDS through NAT. On the interface of your VDS you will see IPv4 local IP address (for example 10.10.0.11) and multiple IPv6 IPs. Locals will only work locally.
IPv4 network is available inside VDS for outgoing connections but all incoming connections are closed. Please refer to what NAT is to see how it works.
Please read 1st paragraph. It explains how to login to your VDS through IPv4 network/connection : http://vds6.net/bsdstart/

PS: we might consider running IPv4 services as well in the nearest future at some US location. Just need to find a place who offers IPv4 IPs in multiple quantities + IPv6 of course.

      Thanks.

Wait 2-3 years when additional IPv4 IP would cost 25$ a single one and IPv6 is inevitable.

Those people who need our services will buy them, those who do not will not. It’s a true rule for any business.

PS: For those who need native IPv4 + native IPv6, we will have a separate vds plan line soon.

  16. Sorry, but your are clearly asking for too much work with no real profit/outcome. Would you work for free? I guess not.
FreeBSD ain’t different from Linux to the end user. The only difference is how you install the software. In Debian/Ubuntu it’s apt-get/aptitude, CentOS/Fedora it’s yum and for FreeBSD it’s pkg_add and ports.
So all you need to do is to change bash script to run with pkg_add and to work with FreeBSD directories. In case of FreeBSD software gets installed into /usr/local/etc/ directory (In Linux it get installed into /etc/) and runs (start-up scripts) from /usr/local/etc/rc.d/ directory, compared to Linux’s /etc/init.d/

        January 4, 2012 @ 1:32 pm | Reply
        • In our case we deal a lot with Webmoney and have plenty of Webmoney, so we are looking for a host who would accept Webmoney + we were looking for a spot who would supply us with IPv4 with minimum investment. Providers in mentioned countries would not give IPv4 is large blocks.
No it’s not hosting.ua, nor infiumhost.

    • >> Anyway, is there a nullfs mount of /usr/ports or do we have to set up the port three within the two GB?
You will have to do (portsnap fetch extract) yourself. Templates are supplied without ports. Each additional 1Gb of HDD is only 0.5$ a month. You may automatically order additional space from our billing panel. You do not even have to order 1Gb, you can order additional HDD space from 1Mb to **(any)Gb.
On the other hand you can install software without installing ports by using command pkg_add (Example: pkg_add -vr nginx).
      Thank you.

PS: We are still thinking about Ukraine. Give me couple of weeks. I’m vacationing in Florida. After I get back to Boston i’ll deal with finalizing my discussion with DC in Ukraine.

      Thanks again.

As we are a budget provider, we concentrate on minimizing the time spent on supporting Operation System templates and rebuilding them each time new software or a new version comes out.

People who use “f* moron” language in our ticket system get special attention – ignorance. You got exactly that.

(Terms of service violation. Paragraph 4.2. Submit 30$ payment and we will resume your vds.) <– this answers all your questions.
If you do not agree to pay that, move on.

      Have a good day.

  33. I am trying out an IPv6 only Ukraine bsd jail. It works fine. I did have to add IPv6 nameservers to /etc/resolv.conf on the jail. It now looks like this:

    scottlinux# vim /etc/resolv.conf
    nameserver 8.8.8.8
    nameserver 8.8.8.8
    nameserver 8.8.4.4
    nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8888
    nameserver 2001:4860:4860::8844

The latency to me (in US) is very high as I guess you would expect with the distance.

    scottlinux# ping6 scottlinux.com
