LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Virpus - $7 512MB VPS with Free DirectAdmin Exclusive Offer

Virpus Kenneth from Virpus emailed me about their exclusive offer for LowEndBox.com readers. Similar to their popular $7/month OpenVZ VPS offer, but with Free DirectAdmin license even if you pay by monthly. Yup, similar to their current offer on WHT but you don’t need to prepay 6 months in order to get the free license. Use coupon code LEB-FREEDA when you sign up. Offer expires on 18 Feb 2010.

  • 512MB guaranteed/2048MB burstable memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 5Mbps bandwidth
  • 2 IP addresses
  • OpenVZ/VSXPathway

Servers are in Kansas City. I’ve actually got one from them for around a month now, and

  • Server/network has been responsive. Although I’ve not put any load on it.
  • Equal share (i.e. not cpulimited) of 4x AMD Opteron 270. Old CPU but works well.

Personally I don’t really use control panels but I guess it would be something useful if you are not comfortable on the command line, or to use it to host sites for family and friends & give them the panel access.

    Promotional Code LEB-FREEDA – 4.00% Recurring Discount

    Subtotal: $11.00 USD
    4.00% Recurring Discount: -$0.44 USD
    Total Due Today: $10.56 USD
    Total Recurring: $10.56 USD Monthly

Sounds like the code is only 4% discount rather than $4 discount. Mistake?

  2. Sorry sounds like my oversight. I think you will need to use this ordering link (taken from the WHT offer thread) ($7 VPS) + the coupon code (free DirectAdmin) to get the offer.

  3. Sorry – it appears it was set to percentage instead of a fixed amount. We have modified it at this time.

    Thank you!

    Thought I would chime in,
I was able to utilize this discount. Went through and was happy with the final cost.

At the risk of a long comment. Due to lower demands, I’m in the process of moving a shared hosting account(hostingzoom) and a dedicated server(server pronto) to a couple of low cost VPS solutions.

Thanks to reviews here and over at WHT among others, I chose to utilize two different hosts.
within 35 minutes of each other(Thursday afternoon.), I setup accounts at 2HOST and Virpus.

Virpus was setup first, and I started poking around on their “VSXPathway” management software. I was familiarizing myself with the tools(new to me) and started to change my passwords out of habit. I set the root password, then using an update password link, thought I was going to change my management page password. After clicking the link, the php page locked up with a white screen, and I could no longer get logged in after that. Neither VSXpathway or CPANEL would accept my log in attempts. SSH to the command line did not work either. Tech support answered me within an hour or so the next morning, and requested me to contact sales support. I didn’t get to this until around 12pm Friday, and due to their limited sales support hours, I was left without that server to play with this weekend. (note, I don’t hold Virpus completely responsible for this, since I’m not familiar with the VPS control panel. I just don’t have an initial review of them yet, but was disappointed that I could not get a password reset in a reasonable time.)

2HOST was about 24 hours to have the server up, which I felt was quite reasonable. Other than a mysql issue (self inflicted) I had it up and serving some pages within a few hours of messing around. I disabled a few services, did several restarts of the Virtual server without any issues. It’s been very responsive and smooth so far.

I thank you for this site, which helped me make some of my decisions and will happily return with some more long term reviews of my experiences in the future.

This is truly a great offer. I signed up after seeing this great deal.
Let’s see how quickly they can provide my vps details.

  6. I had the same password issue as Brian with VSXPathway.
It looks like you’re changing your login password for VSXPathway but actually you are changing your root password. There’s no way to change the control panel password for VSXPathway except for logging a ticket with sales at Virpus. Support wont or can’t do it, it has to be sales and they only work office hours.
Apart from that I’ve had my VPS now for nearly a week and for 7 dollars including Direct Admin it’s a steal!
It performs well and seems stable and support do respond promptly. If however you need to go to sales, they are much slower and needed a second reminder from me to get my password changed.
But for 7 dollars? I can’t believe I am criticising. It’s still a great deal as long as my VPS stays up!

Well oddly enough, things are working now.
I got no response from the sales support ticket, but sent updates and a voice mail. Their phones are either inundated or they just let everything roll to voice mail.
Sales Support gets a low score from me, but for the price, I plan to keep going and see how things perform.

  8. We are aware of the delays with Sales. This is due to an overwhelming demand, so it is taking longer than normal to get back to folks on sales tickets. We’re looking at hiring additional staff to keep things running smoothly in that department. However as usual, support requests are answered within 1 hour day or night.

  11. I have ordered the VPS basic since yesterday (Sunday: local time, Indonesia) and paid by Paypal, but since then until this Monday more than 24 hours now, the VPS haven’t got activated yet. I don’t know what to do, I just sent them my support ticket. I wish they will answer me soon and activate the VPS I ordered soon.

@Sakvith: Virpus had a small outage last night around 1 AM EST. I received an email notifying me of the outage and a follow up 8 minutes later stating that the network was backup. Perhaps you were trying to get to the website during that outage?

@Budiarno: as mentioned above and confirmed by Virpus, setups are running a bit behind. Normal setup time is 24 hours according to my confirmation email, and my VPS was setup in about 26. Considering we were getting a special deal, not available to anyone else except on lowendbox, I think a few hours extra setup time is a pretty small price to pay.

  13. Thank you Neil, I reread on their website.

Wow… they answer my ticket really fast, and I got my VPS activated very soon then. I love their service. I should recommend them to my friend… Thumbs up for Virpus!

  15. @david,

Try again, or just take your order and check out. Their service is reliably fast when you submit your ticket after paying for it. I’ve just ordered for a month and I want to see the performance of their VPS. I use several VPS’s and I think Virpus is the fastest on peek hour (my local time) than the others I have.

  16. Ordered a VPS earlier tonight (maybe four hours ago) on the low end, but added the extra bandwidth package so I can pump some serious bits through the network.

My VPS just went live and, though I’m not at all impressed with the control panel (very sluggish) the VPS seems to be fine. The network appears to be single-homed Cogent, but what else can you expect at this price?

Messing around with the VPS right now. Will report on it more as things progress. I’ll probably throw nginx on it and use it to host some non-speed-critical files…

  17. Ordered a VPS since Friday evening around 6PM. Waiting 24 hours – no email of account activation or information. Sent emails to the sales and support. I received a response from Mr. Kenneth Odem who seems to be the owner of the company telling me “We are working on wrapping up all pending orders now. We apologize for the delay and will have pending orders completed tonight.”(Saturday night).
Waiting until 1 am and then gave up for the night.
Expecting that it would come in this morning (Sunday), checked my email again around 9 am… guess what…. no account information. Sent them emails, no response as of up to now which is Sunday 10:36 PM (more than 48 hours later, 52 hours to be exact wit no response).

What a bad impression! I’m totally soured by the experience so far.
I even have to wonder how hard it is to set up a VPS because I know there are some VPS companies that send out an email within 1 hour etc.

I am wondering if this company is only runs by a single person. Ive ordered my vps 4 days ago and no reply or updates if they are already processing my account. Ive already sent 3 tickets! This is hilarious and expect more turtle speed support when my account is already activated.. after a month maybe…
I am thinking of cancelling my subscription if nothing progress or email received w/in the next 12 hrs.

  20. Virpus sucks:

It’s an oversale company. My vps went down 1-2 times every week and has to restart through control panel by myself.. very annoying.. They don’t seem to fix it for months

  21. My VPS account (5MBPS plan unmetered) also down every single day. I don’t know what to do, but I plan to find other VPS provider than reorder any account from Virpus. The VPS going down so often makes it bad image for Virpus. The 5MBPS plan VPS only works well by a month. After the first month, it is down and down. I haven’t got access to the VPS since 4 days ago until now.

But, the 1600GB on 100MBPS plan seems to work well, it’s been a month without any problem.

I signed up with Virpus for the 6 Month offer. Initially I was quite impressed. However my VPS has been down for nearly a month. Their support cannot find what node I am on, as it’s not on the one they told me it was!
Cannot seem to get this resolved. Every time I contact them they seem to raise an additional support ticket, rather than resolving the initial problem.

Direct Admin was also pants. I kept receiving errors when trying to access the various WebMail clients or administer MySQL databases.

Consider using Virpus carefully before you make a decision.

These are my true experiences and not the rantings of noob who expects something for nothing.

I have used Virpus since they were HostNetWay (remember Ken?) I will tell you this much:

    PROS
    – Cheap prices
    – Responsive admins
    – Decently fast servers

    CONS
    – Horrible service
    – Downtime is inevitable
    – FAST Support BUT will take you 1-2 days to have your problem fixed

In a nutshell, they cost me hundreds of dollars AND embarrassment to clients that were trying to show their website to others. I now pay an extra $5/month for VPS and receive MUCH better service. Virpus IS the poster child for CHEAPER is NOT ALWAYS better.

my VPS website has been down for over a week now. It was up several times for a short period and down again. They told me that mine was on a bad node and where working on it and I asked if they can move my VPS to a good node or let me know the exact reason and make sure it won’t happen again.
and the answer is always something like this
“Please standby, DC is working on the reported issue. The server will be back online soon.”

I guess I have to look for a better one. :(

This “Company” is/was a 1 man show people. It’s Kenneth Odem. The very same one that was Hostnetway Kenneth. Do a quick Google and look him up. He was famous for bad servers and not paying his reseller fees on time each month and got his servers suspnded which resulted in his customers losing their service as well. Then he would blame the customer for the outage. Serious!!! Do a Google for Hostnetway. You will see for yourself.

Can you prove it though?? Ahh glad you asked! Yeah, I can. Google don’t lie. And … I used to be a Hostnetway victim …. errr uhhh Client.

If he is still reselling run like hell! DO NOT send this “company” your money. Look elsewhere.
