Kevin from vpsAO (which is now owned by RC Portfolio) recently wrote in to us to share their new Los Angeles VPS offers with the community. They were featured once before on LEB, and have received good feedback. vpsAO is under new management since October 2018, but the company itself has been in business since 2016.

Their WHOIS is public, and you can find their ToS/Legal Docs here. They accept PayPal, Credit Cards, Cryptocurrency and Alipay as payment methods.

Here’s what they had to say:

“vpsAO is a Los Angeles VPS hosting provider. vpsAO was founded by web developers out of necessity. We saw the lack of quality and non-oversubscribed hosting services in the marketplace, and wanted to revolutionize and set a new standard for the hosting industry.

We’d like to say we’ve been pretty successful in achieving our vision, and continue to fine-tune and implement this vision on a daily basis. Today, vpsAO is home to over 3000 happy customers today, and counting! We believe in building trust through transparency. At vpsAO, we hold ourselves to very high standards and accountability, and this translates to an unparalleled customer experience.”

Here’s the offers:

NETWORK INFO:

vpsAO has infrastructure diversified between three different datacenters within the Los Angeles region.

We’ve been informed that the following offers will be set up in Los Angeles, however there is no predictability as to which datacenter it will be set up in. You will either be provisioned on the QuadraNet, ColoCrossing or Psychz LA datacenter, as these special promotion packages will be set up between their excess/unused space between their infrastructure within those datacenters.

We have been told that at this time, there is no option to select a preferred datacenter because the purpose of the special promotions is to fill up the “empty seats on the bus at a wholesale price,” (the analogy that Kevin mentioned) however, all locations should offer similar latency/performance considering they are all in Los Angeles, and either way – you are getting a decent value server at wholesale-like pricing.

I paid for the 6GB and I shall assume there is some technical challenges that are being worked on and i will wait a week before requesting a refund. At the moment it is not a working server. It takes seconds for the server to register a keystroke. 21 April 2019.

Can i use the server for what i intended? The answer is no. What use can i make of it? I am going to use it to learn about performance measure applications. What can you do to test from within a container what the reality of the allocation and the health of the underlying host is. I do believe that if I had the need i could use it as “cold storage” the disk space is real and for the price, if reliable, is cheap. You get what you pay for, digital ocean here i come.

Heads up, this provider is junk. My box has been down at least 80 hours. It is not possible to use the serial console. No response on my ticket, no answer on their phone. Thankfully it is only a backup box. I spent the weekend rebuilding it on another server.

Some notes on commenting on LowEndBox:

  • Do not use LowEndBox for support issues. Go to your hosting provider and issue a ticket there. Coming here saying "my VPS is down, what do I do?!" will only have your comments removed.
  • Akismet is used for spam detection. Quoting webhostingtalk.com URL seems to get binned consistently here, but I do peek into the spam box frequently to publish those comments.
