LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

VPSPort - $6.99 1GB Windows VPS in Jacksonville

VPSPort VPSPort posted a question on LowEndTalk asking how to be listed, and then later on updated his question with their LowEndBox Special Offer — Windows VPS for $6.99/month with the following spec:

  • 1GB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • Hyper-V/Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

Servers with GoRACK in Jacksonville FL (test IP: 68.67.76.1). Pretty cool video on the page showing how fast their network and how usable their desktop is. Looks like a nice offer for remote Windows desktop or hosting your .NET sites. Domain has been registered for 2 years although most reviews are very recent. For example some on Microsoft’s listing.

Only PayPal is offered. Port 25 is blocked and no mail server is allowed. No IRC server connected to other network, and “if we get complaints your server may be terminated”.

  1. 100G bandwidth? They didn’t mention that on their order page.

    • Those can’t be unmetered, can they?! Their usual $8/month plan has 100GB/month data quota, and their LowEndBox offer was based on that plan so I presume it probably has the same amount.

      • Reasonable, 100GB/m is good enough for such a low price.

        • Opening up a support ticket on their website or droping them an email would be a quicker method of getting assistance. Quicker than posting on a third party website anyway….

They even list a toll free number on their site: 888.587.7929

    • It says no mail server allowed, i.e. port 25 inbound is blocked. Sending spams, yes even the Viagra ones, just needs port 25 outbound.

I guess it might be preventing mis-configured MTA that becomes open relay, which could be common amongst amateur Windows admins.

SMTP uses port 25 inbound and outbound.

        May 31, 2011 @ 4:31 pm | Reply
        • Indeed. Although from what I have read, it is port 25 INTO your VPS that is blocked. It should not prevent your application to connect to a outside MTA listening on port 25.

        • Doesn’t that still allow spam out though? :)

If they have control over their network they could look at just rate limiting outbound SMTP :)

Posting on a third party website is not the way to get help with account information. Give them a chance to respond. I;m sure they will.

If they don;t, than cancel your account, move on and then complain about it.

This is the low end market. Many of these hosts do not have 24/7 support.

This is a windows 2008 R2 server offer.

I’d assume that the game logic, etc. code will someday be able to run on mono without too many xna dependencies, but I doubt it’s a priority right now; they don’t even have a standalone, dedicated windows server yet.

Wouldn’t Terraria’s desire to spend your system resources due to lack of optimisation kind of conflict with the 100 GB traffic limitation on that plan though?
(Tried logging on there today and it went rather astonishingly smooth for me -Kudos to VPSPport!-, but your friends on the server seemed to be rather shocked *grins*)

  19. I have to admit, I didn’t have confirmation for a couple of days, but patience is a virtue (all of a couple of days), and they let me know it was being provisioned soon. This thing is the fastest box i have from about 6 others i have from lowendbox posts (that does include one W2servers one though, but it has become amazingly responsive since their recent ‘pull-back’ on advertising… we’ll see :P). Anyway, it took a few days but I guarantee miss lesly would be kicking himself if he saw it… It’s more responsive than connecting to a local machine at work, however that network in managed by a luddite…

  20. My email confirmation came in a couple of hours after purchase. The details of my account not yet arrived. For example, are offered in my plan (fire starter) 2 IPs, but so far reported only 1.

Within the virtual server everything looks OK, but at this point, IIS 7 is not working, for example http://localhost does not show the welcome page of IIS 7.

The transfer speed is very good for what I need. MySQL works very well. My current problem is that I can not host ASP pages or applications due to problems with IIS 7.

I have requested support for three times without success.

VPSport is a good deal, but customer service should be improved and information on their webpage should be more detailed.

    Best regards

    • Maybe I’m misunderstanding something here but localhost wouldn’t bring up a webserver’s home page on a server hosted elsewhere. It’s local.

By default ASP is disabled in IIS. Also if you want index.asp or index.html default pages you must add these in the configuration.

  21. Maybe I’m wrong, however it appears that IIS 7 fails within this virtual machine. IIS 7 usually presents its “welcome page”, for example using http://localhost (using IExplore). From outside, should be the same, but using http://myipaddress. I’m comparing with another server that I manage: http://200.124.229.130/ where IIS works well, displaying the Welcome page of IIS 7.

I don’t want to sound rude, but with an unmanaged vps it’s best to describe a bit more of your debugging if you’re going to publicly complain about support not helping you with a non-running Windows Service.

Without that sort of detail, all your comments describe is trying to open the IIS in a browser and then contacting support when it didn’t respond. Nothing mentioned about the state of the IIS Service, if there’s anything in the event logs, whether port 80 is open and accepting connections or closed, etc.

Without that sort of detail, a complaint like yours is ambiguous about whether it’s a case of a broken virtualization service and poor support, or a customer who is wrongly expecting an unmanaged company to administer his server for him. It’s not anything personal, and I know writing out more detail is a pain, but it’s just that those sorts of over-their-depth customer complaints do happen, and it’s hard to guess about the person doing a review if there’s no “proof” of the problem likely being on the provider’s end.

        Agreed.

As a side note I would like to suggest the provider to include the W2K8 setup files as some files are required to install/reinstall Windows components and applications.

Said that, I’m happy with the VPS and the network. Both performing great.

Am quite sure you are wrong here. Windows disk isn’t needed for additional packages (never been that in my cases) you install them via Server manager, Then features.

Well, then you shouldn’t be quite sure I’m wrong. :) But to be fair I didn’t try to install DNS in a server running W2K8. I’m sure the setup files are required to install DNS in W2K3. :)

    • IIS works perfectly fine on this VPS.
You need to go into the Server/IIS manager -> Configure Role Services
And add all the services required for your website (ex static content for simple html pages)

If you don’t know what to ad. Remove the role and re-add it. It will select the basic services for you.

The reason the IIS role is pre-installed is because .net 3.5 requires it and it’s installed by default for convenience. I see it’s not causing more issues then helping so I will remove it from the clean image and have no roles or services pre-installed.

It seems like I am the only one having terrible time with VPSPort.
It has now been four days since I made order at May 31th and I still did not get mine delivered.
To be specific, they gave me one with wrong login credential at June 1st.
I mailed them several times and the last reply was sent at June 2nd saying “Thank you for the reminder that you are unable to log in. I will fix your issue today.”
There is no ticket system and they do not answer the phone call I made to the number on the top of their website.

  24. Pros: The virtual server has a good performance. Windows Server 2008 R1. Appropriate amount of RAM, enough disk space. Its price is unbeatable.

Cons: Slow Customer Service. The user must be highly patient. Very little information is available online. Mail with account details is brief. Some features may not be easy to find. The user must be “high skilled”.

I canceled my account (at least temporarily), however I recommend VPSport. Just need more order and better response time.

well it is unmanaged. Unbeateable price, as long as the vps stays up of course.

on my vps os = Windows Server 2008 R2

I installed iis, php, mysql and phpmyadmin without any problem

[The user must be “high skilled”]

It is an unmanaged Windows VPS like every other offered in the market — no working knowledge of Windows server required more than the usual.

By contrast, BurstNet’s Windows VPS requires a lot more: it may be delivered with pending OS installation (you must use virtual console to complete W2K3 SolusVM install), RDP is disabled by default, firewall blocking everything by default, automatic updated options disabled, manual network config required (to change DHCP to static IP and to add the 2o. IP), … yet these are common and easy admin tasks.

Someone called “Lisa” replied at some point and they said I will receive the credentials shortly. That was 2 days ago and still nothing happened. I did escalate this with Paypal in order to get a refund.. still waiting for the $16 to be re-funded.
