Personal opinion: Decent Userinterface on the surface, but bad very bad security practice. Got an cleartext smpt mail back with my current user provided and active password. That is so wrong on so many levels, i cant even tell. That means they transfer [in/out] unencrypted & STORE [!] your CLEARTEXT user provided password that is supposed to protect your personal/company payment information, end even worse, your server and company/company clients data on this server, right?

    • Hello !

      1) Passwords are indeed sent in plaintext format. All emails are sent via SMTPS so if your server does not support secure SMTP – what can I say? =)
      2) All passwords in our databses are stored in “salted SHA”
      3) We recommend all of our customers to change password (especially root) just after they receive it. And please, dont put all responsobility for your security on us =) its “two-side” process.
      4) Our level of security designed to satisfy all kind of customers.

      Regards,

        2) Impresssive. If you only handle/store an salted SHA hash, how on earth can you can relaible “guess” and reverse server side from that hash the user provided password to later send it back via smtp? NSA should hire you guys x) If you really generate an [salted] SHA hash, please do that on client side like everyone else. Thats the idea of using an password hash/token instead of handling user clear text password on your Infrastruktur.

On all other points I’m totally in line with you.

One nit pick: while you are right about most thibga, hashing is usually done server side, not client side. So the client does always have access to clear text passwords while logging in and signing up.

If you hash the password client side, the hashed password essentially becomes the clear text password, and you will be storing it as such.

And yes, I agree sending clear text passwords over email is bad security practice. But I’ve seen quite a few providers do it. I usually just change my password after sign up.

        • mudeth is totally right.

Moreover, we do not do any “decoding”. First we generate passwords and send them to a client and in the same time they are writtent into databases using SSHA. So, NSA can sleep peacefully =)

Your e-mail contains the unhashed password, and is stored on the server in plaintext. How do I know it is stored on the server? I can view it from the Emails page at https://secure.vstoike.ru/clientarea/emails/ (look for “Client:Welcome to Portal”)!

If the server is compromised, then the client passwords are exposed. These passwords are NOT passwords randomly generated by vstoike.ru — it is the password that I entered when I registered for an account. Thankfully I generate new passwords for each website, but it is bad security practice since most users reuse passwords (and you should do everything you can to maximize security for your users, regardless of whether they are following best practice).

That you choose not to simply modify the template to remove the password is striking. It takes 30 seconds, in practice you probably have to discuss it and evaluate the effect, but the current system is clearly unacceptable. You can blame it on WHMCS default, but you’re the one running a hosting service.

          • perennate,

Again, passwords are not stored in plain text.Emails page is just the log of all messages we send to a client and as I said before, we send passwords before hashing and saving them to the database. Of course, emails are also stored in our data base, but they are accessible only from the client area for a logged in user. And if the server will be compromised, your account password would be the smallest problem.

We also dont use WHMCS and we dont remove password from the welcome email, because besides user security, which we certainly care about, there is user experience and many customers prefer to have their login details in their mailboxes.

But thank you for your opinion! Of course, we will discuss this issue and think how we can improve our services.

This guy helped me with my career. I am using his service for two years maybe. One of his IPs was used as a c&c before and I am a security engineer and was able to write my thesis with this.

    Thank you again.

I have not used the VM much beside the project. The download speed is good but the upload speed is kind of slow as I also have 100MBit at home.

Other than that I am happy with it and he never cried when I was too busy to pay sometimes.

I was a bit turned off at first because of the password emails (had same thoughts as https://lowendbox.com/blog/vstoike-3m-512mb-kvm-10gb-hd-1tb-bw-in-russia/#comment-605999)… please don’t email me a password if I entered it!
But other than that, they are pretty good. They have rebranded to “Veesp” now, but is just a name-change. Would suggest to others :)

  21. I’m using their services for more than a year now. The range of voip services from this brand is quite good. The VoIP phone number has feature of voicemail, call waiting, conference calling and call recording. Calling to a VoIP phone number from a landline or even a mobile has been same just like traditional telephone number.
