What Exactly is "Double Bandwidth"?

Double Bandwidth Offers

If you’ve hung around our community for a while, you’ve run across the phrase “double bandwidth”.

What does that mean?

The logical questions are “why is it doubled?  Doubled compared to what?”  After all, if someone is offering an 4GB RAM VPS with 6TB of bandwidth and offers “double bandwidth,” why don’t they just post it with 12TB of bandwidth?

The answer: Vanilla.

As in Vanilla Forums.  It’s the forum software that powers LowEndTalk.  In Vanilla, if someone replies to a thread, that thread is bumped up back to the top.  While threads (or whole categories) can be set to “sink,” by default if someone comments on a topic, it’s popped up back to the top.

This mechanism has not escaped the notice of our providers.  Instead of posting a nice offer and getting a few comments, they sometimes post offers that encourage comments, such as:

  • Reply with your invoice number to get double bandwidth
  • Reply with your invoice number to get something else (more RAM, more disk, DA license, you name it)
  • Reply with your invoice number to be entered in a giveaway

…etcetera.  Some say that RackNerd pioneered this technique but it’s pretty old.

So when you see “Double Bandwidth” on LET, it’s just a marketing technique in the community.  And hey, double anything for the same price is a good deal!

  1. “Double bandwidth” doesn’t make sense. If it was truly doubling the bandwidth then I’d expect to get a 2Gbps connection instead of 1Gbps. It’s really doubling the monthly transfer, but I guess that’s a bit of a mouthful.

    Good point!

Interesting that the word ‘bandwidth’ gives good feelings. More bandwidth is good, no matter what kind it is. ‘Transfer’ and ‘traffic’, not always good.
