LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

MyResellerHost - $5.09 1024MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany

Update Oct 2011 — MyResellerHost is no longer resolving since 8 September 2011. Yet another failed host.

MyResllerHost Arielle from MyResellerHost emailed their exclusive offer code for LowEndBox readers. Use MRH-VPS-Lowend to get 15% off recurring discount. Their budget OpenVZ plans are called Warp Speed (can I haz Ludicrous Speed, plz?!) and “Warp-2” would be $5.09/month after the discount. Some pretty impressive on-paper spec

  • 1024MB memory
  • 250GB storage RAID protected
  • 500GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps port
  • 2 IP addresses
  • OpenVZ/HyperVM

Yes — 1GB of memory and 250GB of disk space for just a bit over 5 bucks. Servers are Core i7 boxes with 24GB RAM, in either Hetzner or LeaseWeb in Germany, or SingleHop in Chicago. They seem to have multiple sales staffs (a drop down in the order form), and Arielle mentioned they have distributed support teams across the globe. Domain registered in Feb 2009, but they are also a child company of “LDS Host” that has been around since 1999. No, you don’t have to be a member in LDS church to order the service :) Head quarter based in Salt Lake City in Utah, and they also boast an office in Second Life. The entire TOS is available as a single big image only so can’t really do a search on it.

Did I mention their website really hurt your eyes?!

  5. Hmmm, their ToS says that they’re based out of Wilmington, Delaware. There’s also a fair amount of duplication within the document. It’s interesting that they promote the Second Life but they disallow such sites in the document under the bit about investment sites.

For those wondering: no IRC be that either server, script or bot; no MUDs; no open proxies; no linking to warez; no torreting; and no image hosting sites.

I am staff there, when I had a sponsored VPS there in the old California server, it did beat my Hostrail one by 15 times. However, when they moved CP’s I just lost track of it.

I did some internal testing, and it turns out for them to have a great performance.

        Really ???
Very strange configuration, 1 Gb RAM and ~ 140 Mhz Cpu :) In fact, 1 Gb of RAM it’s just advertising trick. It would be better to see 256 Mb of RAM and 1 Ghz CPU, for example.

That must be the catch. Low CPU resources compensated by huge amounts of disk space and RAM. For my applications, I can live with that. In fact, I have a similar gig with Web Wide Hosting’s Virtual Backup Servers. 80GB disk, 100MB RAM, 100Mhz CPU. I love it!

        • Remember that it is 2x 140MHz = 280MHz which is actually not too far from HostRail’s $1.05/month offer with 300MHz.

I have to admit that i’m a bit confused. They have 3 TOS pages:
    1) http://www.myresellerhost.info/clients/?page=terms-of-service
    2) http://www.myresellerhost.info/index.php?/core_termsofuse/index.html
    3) http://myresellerhost.info/cms/tos

The 3rd say something about 45 days money back, but the other 2 not :S

    • Hello,
Regarding the TOS, we have 3 as for the 2 are the current and the same.

The number 3 listed is the old TOS of the site and we have /cms still working until now. That TOS is now replaced by number 1 and 2

      • Maybe adding a note to the old ToS’es stating that they are invalid and pointing to the current one would be a good idea….

By their TOS they can use my NAME AND LOGO IN presentations, marketing materials.. web siste listings, search results page, referral pages, etc.
They can share my personal information to third parties… and use my URLs, etc with advertizers, business partners, sponsors, etc…

    • Why you think you got lucky. We only host that many amounts of VPS on one server until it’s resources are gone. Most servers we have have 3+ harddisks, and as we own our hardware we can always increase ram on a server should we see there needs to be more ram. Right now we do not offer an equal share policy except on our Xen and Trans Warp VPS. However, if someone wants equal share he can always send a ticket to the Sales team and we can if available put your VPS on a less populated server and we do that in some cases.

Simple math since Hetzner said they don’t custom X series they come with maximum 750GB RAID1, that mean op can place 3 PEOPLE MAXIMUM making 15$ out of 60$.

  33. The offer is not too bad. 1GB is a marketing gimmick, as the CPU units you get cannot even put that to use. But if you put the math down and go with a higher package, it works out.

However, we are talking 20-30$/month here and for 49 Euros/month you can get a full blown i7 Server from Hetzner and become the next LEB Host :D

I am asking this directly because you smoothly ignored our concerns expressed above. You’re not charity institution, people pay for professional service to host their property on your servers so how can you take a right to use/share their name, logo, urls, etc… for your own aim? Accepting your abusive TOS is by my opinion serious danger for any business which would want to use you as a host.

So, specs that they show you are great. 250GB disk space, 1GB ram that you can use, 10TB transfer per month. OK, so what’s the catch?

If you get a VPS (which I did) and do “cat /proc/user_beancounters”, you’ll see that “maxproc” is 50. Tell me, on normal use, how can you use all the other resources with 50 processes?

I tried. I have LAMP running. MySQLd itself forks out 5-10 threads at idle. Apache around 3-6 threads at idle. sshd takes one thread per connection, plus the background-running thread. Bash takes one per session. Then you need to count in init, named, xinetd, cron, syslogd, dbus-daemon, console-kit-daemon, etc… I basically ran out of threads/process with just me browsing my website (fork() returns error). Heck, even my router can do better.

    I’m cancelling my service now.

I do believe that is a legality, may be wrong, however there is more problems with that TOS, but seriously, this is a joke host from everything I have seen, so we loose our on procs and we loose out on cpu but we get compensated with disk, but when a user says they are buying 5 and backing loads of data to it, they change their terms? I will be using MY VPS for hosting clients with cPanel. Not very low end but it is the reason i brought it. The I/O speeds are good and their connectivity is amazing.. SSH connection is opened as soon as i click connect – no waiting time (normally 1-3 seconds)

Personally i do not use the forum because if i am paying for a VPS then i expect to have a dedicated support desk for help, not a forum where everyone can see what i am saying.

What i meant by amazing was that they made modifications to my VPS that a normal VPS host would not bother doing, instead a normal host would just refund you.

I decided to try this service hoping that the assumptions and negative comments here were not true. I’ll just narrate what happened, without giving my opinions and you decide yourself if it’s worth the try.

I signed up 28 hours ago and availed the VPS-Warp Speed 2 plan for $5.09 USD. After signing up, the invoice was sent to my email and I tried paying using Alertpay (I just became interested with their service because they accept Alertpay and that’s my only account – I hate Paypal). The error message when paying via Alertpay is:

“We apologize, but the payment button settings are incorrect. The following problems occurred:
The posted field ap_test has been deprecated. To test your buttons, turn on test mode in your business account
If you are a buyer, please inform the seller.”

So I immediately informed them about the issue, after 35 minutes, they responded by saying they will investigate the issue. After more than 7 hours of having no response from them, I decided to follow up and they immediately replied that they “will forward this issue to the head” and that they have created my VPS already even without me paying the first invoice.

That was a nice move except for the fact that the VPS that they provided is not working. It would not even boot up in HyperVM panel and I cannot even rebuild it. The error when rebuilding the OS of the VPS is “Alert: rebuild_failed_could_not_untar”. Initially, the HyperVM panel they provided me is also infested with the dreaded error message “The VM () Doesn’t Exist on localhost. If you have migrated the vps, you can manually change the server in the database using the below, Or restore from backup.” They managed to fix this after a couple of hours but the VPS is still unable to boot and I am still unable to rebuild the OS or choose another OS.

My questions are: Is it normal for a provider to provide a non-working VPS in the first attempt? Is it hard to fix the Alertpay payment page error when the html/php codes are probably readily available from Alertpay itself?

I will just wait for their last ditch efforts and see if they can still provide a working VPS and fix their Alertpay issue, otherwise I will cancel tomorrow.

I was about to respond to my open tickets because there were no updates for the past 24 hours from them when the error “E-mail and/or password is incorrect” showed up in their client area even after requesting for a password reset.

Hi, I bought the offer described here. I’ve had it for a couple of weeks for testing, so far:

    1) My ssh server mysteriously got ‘corrupted’, and I wasn’t able to login, even though the config was working fine and I didn’t touch it. Anyway, it’s possible I did something, but doubtful. They were nice and tried to reinstall ssh package for free, but said it didn’t work, so I had to reinstall OS.
    2) I found the server isn’t responding this morning and raised a call. 5 hours later, reply is “Thank you for reporting us the issue, we will look after the issue and when its solved we will let you know, hence we all need is your patient in it. :)”

The support seems friendly enough, but I don’t think this should be used for anything serious/if your livelihood is based on it. 5+ hours downtime isn’t acceptable for that sort of thing. But, hey, you get what you pay for, right? I’m sure there’s a niche here for dirt-cheap vps where your server can be down for a long time, like gaming servers, personal website, whatever…

So it’s been a good learning experience, will go for something a bit more expensive but dependable. This isn’t necessarily a bad comment about myresellerhost – 5 bucks for a nice vps without SLA, ok, understood.

I have now been a customer with MyResellerHost for 16 days and i have already moved off their servers.. Not a very good company in my opinion but i will let you make your mind up yourself :)

    Problems;
I created a ticket at 14/03/2011 20:41:34 regarding IPTables. I get many replies but not the reply i want to tell me its fixed, just “we are working on it”, “wait a little longer please” and my favorite one, “i am forwarding this to our senior admin”. After around 12 replied to the ticket i finally got a positive response that reads “Sorry for the delay. Our technician has fixed this problem of your VPS.”. I then log into my VPS (by this time i had already moved off) just to see if these guys know how to run things and my guess was right, NOTHING has been altered to my VPS, still having the same issues. The best bit about this is how funny the email i got today was, “you have not replied in 24 hours, the ticket is closed”.. I did not receive any solution for 13 DAYS (over 300 hours) i was merely told to wait.

    Random memory spikes.
Random downtime which go unexplained even when asked.
Default CentOS has no IPtables support at all.
Default CentOS has no second level quotas at all.
    /proc/user_beancounters limits were mad.. (http://pastebin.com/raw.php?i=u4WYnv7K)
    Bad tech support.

    Good points;
Connectivity was pretty good, hit 8mb/s every time i did a test and SSH was pretty fast.
    … … well that’s about it really.

To sum things up, if you are just looking for a VPS to fool around on and test scripts then this is perfect but when you are offered 250GB space and 1GB memory im pretty sure thats not why you brought it. It has great connectivity and the VPS itself is very fast at times, however their tech support is extremely bad, problems are solved in more than a weeks time for simple OpenVZ issues. Random downtime and random memory spikes which are never explained.. I would say this VPS is great for backups what with the space.. oh wait, you are not allowed to do that lmao. I don’t think i have ever been so frustrated with a VPS host, had over half my clients submit tickets about server issues.

      ipt_recent

      iptable_nat/ipt_REDIRECT

Those to be exact and they need to be set by the VPS host on the node.

Good price for the storage offered, but don’t expect any kind of uptime/availability/support. NTP not running on the host and time drifting by a few seconds daily, answer? We can help you set your timezone.. d’uh.

whois is a bitch, I have 5 ‘advertising business’ related domains worth at least 500usd each age 2006 (wanted to start advertising biz that year) so they will be for sell sooner and later and people who will buy them can also point at there whois and say hey we have been in the biz for 5 years, when in reality they will be just starting (most likely, unless they rebrand).

And 6 month on who.is is hardly a lot to even speak about it in the first place ;).

  93. Ok, my feedback, now is the moment:

VPS uptime ok, like 2 reboots in 20 days.
    Pretty performance overall.
The support people is nice but…

    Here my problems:

Time set wrong in the node. Fixed aprox in 2-3 days.

Disk problems, decreasing (clearly oversell), I was in some moment aproximately at 90GB of free space. Never fixed fully, long tickets and every answer by a new support man. I think a communication problem.

I don’t need a lot of space, but I considered to be good to get that issue fixed, as I said in some ticket, if I go now and download 100GB I will not have space and then they will get more tickets like this (more work for the employers I think. Is better to get solved that IMHO).

After that, requested a cancellation for the END OF CYCLE. My account was terminated aprox at the day 18. And my other 12 days?

    Submitted a ticket:

    Me:

    Hi

My VPS was terminated 10 days before the due date. And yes, I put “end of cycle” in the cancellation request.

    Any reason?

Also, I think I am in the right for a refund.

The disk space problems in the node never were solved.

    MRH:

Usually when a billing system invoices, it invoices a few days before the actual do date, so that could be the cause, and i dont think that you should receive a refund as you had it 20 or more days. But if you like i can transfer you to the manager. Im only a supervisor here so i cant offer refunds.
    Best Regards,
    Shawn

I didn’t get any new invoice, BECAUSE I requested a cancellation. And

    Me:

The next invoice hasn’t been arrived yet, and I submitted the cancelation request for the end of the billing cycle. Then, no invoice.

Also, I am speaking according to your VPS Terms of service, 45 days for a refund.

    Thanks

And yes, you can read the TOS, they offer 45 days…

    MRH:

We do not offer refunds on terminated accounts.

    Me:

Well, then that is a new clause for your TOS and refunds.

And then, I got only 20 of 30 days of the month, without any acceptable justification. That is unfair…

No answer after that, and no VPS for the last 10-12 days in the billing cycle.

    Next due date: 04/16/2011
    Down: 04/04/2011

    Bad experience at the end.

(Sorry for my english, I am writing fast xD)

After my last response as you can see in the last post, I got an answer, I don’t know if I must cry or laugh:

    Best Regards,
    Shawn

WTH! What whas that? We are talking about refunds and the 45 days TOS clause and now you are talking about abuse? o_O OMG!!!!! I am in SHOCK.

Looks like they’re recovering. Good. I still cannot access my VPS though, and I cannot pay the bill because the client area is offline so idk if my VPS got cut because of the crash or because of late payment.
