One of the biggest feature in SolusVM 1.3+ is the Linux-KVM support, and I am sort of expecting to see more and more providers diving into the it and bringing in cheap KVM-based virtual servers. Tim from Hostigation informed me their new KVM offer earlier today, and it starts at $6/month with the following spec:
- 256MB memory
- 10GB storage
- 500GB/month data transfer
- KVM/SolusVM
Here is the link to order. FreeBSD 8.2 is also available to be deployed. Servers in Rock Hill SC, and Tim has also sent in some pretty good benchmark results. A bit more expensive than their previous OpenVZ offer, but cheaper than their current Xen plans. You get a full virtualized VM rather than just a container. Hostigation has been around for >5 years, had a good review in a comment posted here and on WHT. They are (were?) also offering 30-day moneyback guarantee although I am not sure whether it is still applying to KVM packages.

I have a OpenVZ with them. This service is good, and the support is very fast. Tim runs this solo I think. Highly recommended.
Setup today with them, excellent support in getting set up, both issues were my fault and Tim was fast to assist. VM is fast and responsive. Huge plus for me is that Hostigator support FreeBSD as a guest OS, my entire infrastructure is based on FreeBSD and tools built around it.

CentOS works fine on mine. It does run a little too much by default but that is because the CentOS ISO installs too munch by default.
Cachefly download: 7.86 MB/s
dd reported 25.4 MB/s which seems low but I don’t have any IOWait issues and hdparm reported 142.16 MB/sec
Support is fast, my rDNS request was done in 3 min.
They have a $3/mth 128MB KVM plan now in case $6 was a little high for some people.
I signed up for it ($3 plan) because I thought it would be a good location for a VPN endpoint. I got
a IPSEC/L2tp VPN server setup on my VPS and it works great so far.
IO Test:
Maybe a new node? I’ve never seen 108MB/s on a Xen or KVM low end box.
Only downside I’ve seen so far is that the network is really reliant on cogent bandwidth, which
is probably why they can give 500GB on a 3$ plan. Although I haven’t really run into a problem with it.
I only get around 50-60MB/s
The ping is around 30ms from my house, which is the best of any LEB I have tried. (I’m in North Carolina, in a small town near Charlotte which is less than 100 miles from Rock Hill, SC)

The node that my VPS is on had a raid problem of some sort – data was all accessible but
they said they were going to reboot the node to try to clear up the problem, whatever it was. The reboot
didn’t clear it up and instead of just letting it boot back up and copying the data over
to a new server or backing that data up they have decided to go with a may 29 backup. Since i signed up
after may 29 I’ll be getting a fresh vps and will have to reconfig things. A little disappointing :(
Good they ha backup but not of course does not help you and others who registered on may 29.
Sounds like the same problem Nordicvps experienced in Fremont, disk crash that was not recoverable.
At least they actually gave users a VPS account again at the same price/location, unlike nordic.

Well, as you all know, one of the KVM nodes failed miserably and was restarted from scratch, a situation nobody ever likes to see. Myself included, which is why I like to at least make best effort backups of everything once a week, but it was nice to see a much higher level of understanding here about the ordeal. The node has been rebuilt, everyone has been notified tehy can at least do a fresh install of the OS, and I am waiting on SolusVM to respond to a ticket about the error I am having with the restore script, but they are no cPanel support department by any means.
My biggest anger over this is 2 weekly backups did not run, but only on the KVM nodes, Xen and OpenVZ nodes backed up as usual. I’m just glad I didn’t need to resort to the emergency replacement equipment sitting in the corner, it’s there just for times like this, has raid10, but is only a quad core with 8gb of ram so things can at least limp along and downtime is never more then 24 hours with even the largest catastrophe.
Thanks for getting things back up. I think you handled it a lot better than some others would have ;0 .
Anyways. I was able to reconfigure my VPS back to where it was and its rocking out again.

Nice to see someone who invests in back up equipment. Almost tempted to offer my services if you need help but I have no real way from getting to Rock Hill from Charlotte. :)
Phil at SolusVM was awesome helping to figure out the snag with the backups, and turns out when he helped me a few weeks ago to make the Solus master 100% IPv6 capable for the clients and WHMCS it introduced ::ffff:IPv4 as valid IPv6 dual stack which was not taken into account and in turn broke the backups on everything as the slaves were connecting with ::ffff: but the master was expecting IPv4, and the slaves connect to the master to retrieve the FTP credentials, but the master wasn’t telling them anything, instead shunning them like a red headed stepchild. Everything is now working and I am restoring the backups for any vm that has not already been re-installed by its owner. And even better is this weekend the backups should run properly.
So drmike, I guess you are like me, don’t drive? I had a car for 6 months shortly after moving to SC but after the insurance was set to renew I though back, and I had driven twice in that 6 months, to the grocery store, and for $200 over 6 months I could buy a lot of cab rides back with my goods, and still have change left over. I can walk to the datacenter from my apartment in 3 minutes, why do I need a car? And like today shows, I’ve yet to have something fail and take me much longer then 4 hours to make serious progress on restoration. To all those shy of a 1 man show, why?
About an hour walk for me and the bus does go right by it. (Well a block away as I’m in the building behind now.) I take some rather severe meds so they don’t want me behind the wheel.
I moved down here in ’91. Insurance went up like 5x. I just handed them my license. Tried a bike but was hit 3 times in the first month. Second and third times, the drivers kept right on going.

If i want to upgrade my KVM VPS, we must destroy the VPS first and then recreate the VPS with bigger spec, right?
RAM and cores can be added on the fly, disk space will need to be destroyed then repartitioned, or I can manually add a 2nd LVM and pass it to the VPS which you can partition and do with what you want.

The storage plans are detailed http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1055770 but to give a little more detail, some who use rsync to copy over seriously huge numbers of files need a bump in burst, which is not a problem. Currently in Rock Hill SC (About 20 miles south of Charlotte) and yes, SolusVM The server itself is a 10 drive software raid6 with two spares.

Francisco also gave me the idea you can use gparted to expand the partitions and systemrescuecd is one of the ISO you can boot into to work with your VPS through VNC.
I just want to comment that I got one of these little (128MB) toys.
I am trying to learn FreeBSD (I am completely a virgin xDD) and everything seems to be working fine.. but the minimal install is really big, like 600MB u_u And after two or three utilities has grow about 1.5GB :S

Hmmm, I guess I did a mistake. For some reaosn df shows usage in blocks (512KB?) and well, yes, it uses 350 MB. And with the ports maybe another 400 MB extra.

I’m not a huge Intel fan as many know, but this E3-1270 has been extremely impressive.
We also utilize the E3 1270 on our new nodes in Fremont and Yes they are amazing fast :)
