Solid service from the previous offer in Germany, the only downside I notice is the lack of native IPv6 and also not being able to use an IPv6 tunnel.

Correct, it’s swap, not OpenVZ-style “burst RAM”.

Their German network has been great for the 104 days and counting that I’ve been with them. Quite fast, quite powerful; one of if not the best deals in Germany right now, if you can live with vserver.

They’ve been promising IPv6 sometime in 3Q11, which would suggest they hope to have it coming soon. Not a big deal for me as I couldn’t care less about IPv6, but…

I’d jump on this in a heartbeat, but I seem to recall another provider recently leaving TeleCity Amsterdam because of chronic network problems. Then again, Alvotech seem to have their own AS and BGP, so may have better connectivity. Hmmn…

      “free”?

Is it burst ram or swap?

(I’d believe that they know the difference and that it’s RAM, but did read somewhere that it was swap)

      Thanks!

Burst is shown as swap, that’s how linux-vserver implements it.

        August 24, 2011 @ 3:44 am | Reply
        • the real thing is.. “burst” is a weird unexistant word created in the VZ VPS business. Vserver implements normal swap, like Xen and others :P

          August 24, 2011 @ 4:24 am | Reply
        • rm:

Well, it’s not that normal… Should be noted that VServer swap is not necessarily going to actual disk-based swap on the host node AT ALL, unless the node itself runs out of free RAM. Another difference is that on VServer your processes can be killed with OOM if you use a ton of this “swap” even while technically staying within its total limit. In this aspect it behaves as the burst ram on OVZ.

With Xen and KVM, if you’re swapping, the moment you start, you are actually doing it to disk – no matter if the host node has RAM to spare or not. On a ‘good’ side, with those you can use 100% of RAM and 100% of swap and not be killed (just have some really awful performance and use a lot of disk I/O for swapping, which in turn may flag you as an abuser).

          August 24, 2011 @ 4:37 am | Reply
        • Well, you are always under the rules of the virtualization technology (limits, as you say), and under your own OOM killer in the guest OS.

To me: Burst RAM must be RAM (shared) & Swap is HDD only…

Thanks a lot for your input!

If this RAM labelled as Swap can get my apps kicked, how is it usefull? How much of that can be used without the app being kicked?

          Thx!

        • rm:

          @Bob
so it is called Burst and not Swap for a reason, since you can utilize Swap as much as you like, but you’re only supposed to use Burst RAM very briefly. There is no way to know how much of burst RAM you can use and for how long, and you should configure your apps so that you do not rely on burst RAM being available at all.

According to German and EU law they have to put the price including the taxes. But you can either deduct the taxes in your own state (resident state has to deduct taxes) or you ask the company to give you the price without taxes.

  19. This company is bullshit. Before they even offered here, I found them via a search engine and tried to order. The thing with the VAT is a RIP OFF and I think it is time I alert the German tax authority about them, since they ALWAYS charge VAT by default, even if outside the EU.

I run a legitimate business since 1996, which I expanded to an “Inc.” in 1998. I have legitimate founding papers and if my company was not real, I am wondering why I pay a tax consultant to do our taxes. They DENIED taking the VAT off because my VAT did not show up in some online service they allegedly use. I explained to them, that all Greek companies prior to 1999 are not in this registry. They then argued that our VAT expired in 2003 (how could they come up with that if they could not find us in the first place?). However our VAT was extended by one digit in about that time period. Anywhoo …

I sent them my company papers and they refused to deduct VAT. If I was “cheating” with that, it would be ME who is committing the fraud and not them. Which is not even an issue, since my company is 100% legit. German idiots, ey? :P

I don’t think so. Your vat id (EL069067800 this id is listed on your website) can not be verify with european vat id validation form at http://evatr.bff-online.de/eVatR/#.

The result for the check is:

      ***
Ihre Anfrage am 24.07.2011 um 16:15:29 ergab folgendes Ergebnis:

Die angefragte USt-IdNr EL069067800 ist zum o.g. Zeitpunkt ungültig.

Sie war im Zeitraum von 20.10.1998 bis 30.12.2003 gültig.
      ***

      englisch translation of the result:

      ***
Your request on 07/24/2011 at 16:15:29 revealed the following results:

The requested tax identification number is to EL069067800 o.g. Invalid date.

It was valid in the period from 10/20/1998 to 12/30/2003.
      ***

so your vat id was only valid until 12/30/2003 and is valid any more, it not there fault.

      July 24, 2011 @ 2:17 pm | Reply
      • Yeah, I know all that. On about that date in 2003 I changed my personal company to an “Inc.”
In about 2000-2002, there was the problem, that my VAT was not listed, when such services started, as my company is founded in 1996 (and expanded into other fields of business in 1998), which is prior to 1999 and I was told that this is/was the reason I was not listed. Nothing but problems with those services.

By now I am in business for 15 years. By now I employ 4 employees, even 5 if you count my accountant who is receiving a small salary, rather then service payments. We have the usual VAT givetake with our local financial authority every 2 months and we have dozens of invoices going out per week. We are a 100% regularly, lawfully and registered business for 15 years now and if some online site says otherwise, pardon my arrogance if I really do not give a damn. This whole EU thing is a pile of junk anyway cause nothing works and it is all BS. I wish Greece would have never joined this circus as life was 5-8x better here before the EU “happened”. Thanks god my business survived everything so far, this is all I can say about this.

By now I have cancelled all of our VPSs and Servers we had in the US, Germany, Netherlands etc.
I found a very professional Provider/Datacenter in the Ukraine last month, which is run by very capable people who do and CAN do everything I ask for. I am getting dedicated servers from them at prices where you normally get only some of the larger VPS. The uptime is 100%, the service and the hardware just rocks and since I am forced to rent Plesk elsewhere, as they don’t offer it, I am getting it over 50% cheaper then renting it from the Providers I had my servers before (cause they obviously wanted to make a profit on the Plesk License too).

Needless to say that VAT was never an issue, even if one would not be a business but a private person, since it is simply outside the EU. Truth being told, it was frustrating for me to run a legitimate business, paying 4 employees and dealing with the “IRS”, as every business has and then being accused by some people of not having a business, just because some piece-of-crap-website says so. What can I say …

It must have a reason that you have canceld “all” your VPSs and Servers you had in the US, Germany, Netherlands etc. to go to a Ukraine Server. Is it because of the Laws?

I have tested Tim´s link and yes it says that your VAT ID is invalid. You gibe your faults to antoher company and you like t alert the German tax athority, i think it´s better that nobody will inform the Greek tax authority that you are working with a invalid VAT ID. Is that the reason why you use now Ukraine Servers?

Anyway, I do not have to explain myself to anyone. I have my recent tax forms lying in front of me (if I pull them out of the dossier). The same forms I sent to Alvotech f.e. and also everyone who is in doubt of any kind can pull my public company founding documentation of 2003, since it it is not a natural person’s business since then anymore. This information is public and can be obtained from the greek IRS, AFAIK even without any fees. “’nuff said”

“Q2: How is this information obtained?
The information relating to VAT-registration data is captured by the national administrations and fed into national databases.”

Exactly. In Greece the TAX ID (not VAT although it is derived from that) is/was the same as the social security number. I did not have a business per se (like an Inc. or LTD etc) but I was “just” a citizen who was engaged in business activity (Personal Business). All those “businesses” prior to 1999 were NOT (!) entered into the Registry. Especially when you had not been doing business for some time and just sent a 0 Drachmes/Euro Tax Declaration due to no profit being made i.e. no invoice being written.

The only way to 100% make sure if a (non personal) business exists, is to query the Greek IRS directly. I had some servers in Germany and in the Netherlands and the people there actually did this, got the information verified I sent them by the Greek IRS and then gave me TAX Exempt Status. It is not my fault if some database of some server, EU or not, is not 100% complete and frankly I do not care. I am in Greece, I live and work here, I make good money and run healthy business. My only concern is that and my standing with the Greek government and that the Greek Tax Authority never “thinks” I don’t have a valid business lol
If some other parties, websites, even the EU themselves think otherwise, I really could not care less. And I refuse to spend time and effort to “rectify” a situation which does not require any rectification.

stop talking bullshit with your not online registered number. Your vat id is registered online, but the number is not valid any more. Your number was only valid for period from 10/20/1998 to 12/30/2003. All european vat numbers are checkable online.

    • Alright, you got me. I am employing 4 people, pay their salary, pension fund and health insurance and I am also paying vast amounts of collected VAT to the IRS without actually having a business. It is all a big conspiracy. We are also responsible for the 9-11 bombings and Area 51 is in reality located on my property and that is why my company does not really exist, because Area 51 is a classified location. Just one hint: I am not a person, but an alien, so are my employees. We don’t have a valid VAT ID, cause we ate it. Human food cannot sustain us, so we had no choice but eat our VAT ID. If you find any VAT IDs on the net, please forward them to here-is-your-dinner@globalwebgate.com because we are very hungry and cannot work on an empty stomach.

      Thank you,
may the force be with you,

        • Drugs are bad … m’kay? :)

I was been made aware of the “problem” just this month. I had my accountant research the issue immediately and this is why I have all this information on the issue. I then spoke with my former server providers in Germany and The Netherlands, asking them how it came to be that they granted Tax Exempt, despite the “issue” I had just been made aware of. Since both companies are very large (1&1 and LeaseWeb), they know/knew about such issues being indeed a fact and pulled my information via the Greek IRS directly. This was even only possible, because since 2003 my company is actually a “real” company (and not a personal business anymore) and the records are publicly available via the IRS or some other Ministry perhaps. That is why I was never made aware of this issue, as those companies “handled” the issue themselves. I also have no motivation to waste my time with it anymore, since I am looking at a full blown 19″ Rack in my own Rack Cage at the Ukrainian Datacenter I now work with. Unless something very bad happens (knocking on wood), I will not ever lease, rent or buy any other service ever again, anywhere.

My clients are all advertising companies in the USA and Canada and my servers are/will be supplied by the Ukraine = I will not run into this issue anymore anyway, as I never had before as well. And since here in Greece I have no problem whatsoever concerning my business, which is located in Greece, I really do not care about anything else. Maybe at some point the issue will fix itself, when data is updated or whatever. Would be nice, but I would be lying if I said that I even remotely care.

Just 2 months ago some “wanna-be-Internet-Police”-Website blacklisted one of my domains, cause one of their registered users complained against it, that is a bad and evil site or something like that. A few years back, SpamCop blacklisted some of my IPs, cause a client on my Web Server had been sending bulk email (legit emails btw, double opt-in email list).
So you see, anyone can claim anything about anyone, anywhere. I have realized this fact many years ago and therefore I only care about REAL issues and REAL institutions so I don’t end up in REAL jail some day :D :D

So give up with your scam. Is here anyone who can give a link to the Greece authority to stop this guy? When he really has cutomers he is frauding and i think that´s also a crime in Greece.

        • If you want to report me to the Greek authorities then just Google for it. This is really the dumbest thing I have hear in years. I am not selling anything to you or anyone else here. So yeah, my VAT ID obviously is NOT being reported back as “valid”. We have already established that and I do not dispute that this is happening. I really wonder how many people must still come to this thread and post that they checked my VAT ID on site http://www.whatever-check-VAT-IDs-here.something
and it came back as invalid.

Now you come along saying that someone should report me to the Greek Authorities to “stop” me. To stop me from WHAT. And you say that I am FRAUDING my customers … with WHAT exactly am I FRAUDING my customers? Please, I really need to know as you obviously know more things about me and my business then I do.

So what else is going to come out of this thread, I am really looking forward to see!

Ah and to answer your question “Thomas”. I am renting servers in the Ukraine cause Germany sucks donkey balls. The people working in the data centers are incompetent, unfriendly and unflexible. Germans are always quoting the law and pretending to be so very lawful but only if it suits them. I believe the reason is that deep down, every German is just a little Nazi, who is angry that Hitler lost the war and blames all of his problems on foreigners and other countries. That is why you behave like pigs when you come to my country on vacation with your fat bellies and stinking drunk breath. You have turks, russians and other foreigners in your country who fuck your women and take your money, cause you are nothing but victims with tiny dicks and no balls in your trousers. You are the laughing stock of the world, cause you are not men, you are mice.

  24. Don’t forget my LinkedIn account. More info on me there, since you seem to be a big fan ;)

And btw, just some heads up info … hey for my biggest fan, right? :)
    1) I am 50% German. I said that numerous times and I never hidden that fact and honestly *cough* my NAME does not really sound Greek now does it?^^
    2) I was one of the very first people here in Greece (thus making some enemies in the process) who said that it is Greece’s own fault that it is in this situation. Greece forged the numbers to be able to join the EU, period. IF you had asked me, I would have told you that in MY OPINION, Greece should have not received a single Euro in financial aid. If I were the German government, Greece would get nothing from me … ZERO.

So you see, we are on the same page with this and it is a shame that only because I am 50% Greek and living (and having my Area 51 conspiracy-fraud company here) in Greece, that I am “one of the same” like all Greeks who want money from the EU. I would let this country go bankrupt, cause this is what it deserves and that’s that. Didn’t see that coming, huh?

And yeah, I am a racist. In Germany I beat stupid turks who had big mouths and annoyed my girlfriend half-dead and because of what turks did in Cyprus, if there was a war now, I would be the first soldier going over there and killing them all. If you Germans are too stupid or afraid to teach those turks, russians and other brutes in your country to behave, then blame your tiny balls and NOT others. If anyone HERE ever behaved like the foreigners in YOUR country, we would nail them to the next wall mate. We don’t take shit and I think it is time that people in Germany stopped to take shit as well, don’t you agree?

Thank that you are confirm thats you number is noch checkable. If you half german, you know how stupid the german tax office is, if the can’t verify a number, they will not accept the tax free invoice and will charge the tax for this invoice. German officials don’t like to work or ask for this number in Greek.

I agree with you about your things about germany, so stay cool. But this check problem, is problem on your side and/or on the greece eu vat system. You can’t bother another company for this problem, it is not there fault, they handle it right (based on there fucking germany rules).

If you give a right reason to believe you – there is no problem to do that.

    Hello,

Alvotech is doing really well. I’m very satisfied with them. I purchased a VPS through their previous offer here and it is very stable.

The support has relatively good response (even on weekends) and solid technical background.

The only glitch I met during these months was a period where there was some packet loss (~5%) and low I/O speed. Both were resolved in a few days and they were not critical for the VPS operation.

Greetings from Greece :-) (Some of us work till really late here)

  27. Alvotech is the best low-end VPS provider I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen dozens of them in the past few years. I’ve got a German vServer from their previous offer. Currently it has more than 70 days uptime (would be more without me playing with it), the network is lightning fast:

    # wget http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

    I/O is pretty good too:

What more can I add? If you need stable and fast VPS in Europe for few bucks – go to Alvotech!

I think that is a great service, they also had the option of doing nothing. Almost every (openvz, linux-vserver) providers over-sells. They just have to manage not to over-sell to much. And for the price I payed Alvotech, I didn’t have any downtime (except for those 5 minutes). So great!

Alvotech is unreachable: my server is unreachable neither from serbian providers, nor from Hetzner: also, their website is unreachable. So, what’s going on?

    …i already have customers complaining…

OK, seems it was just networking problem @their datacenter, or ISP: server shows 44 days uptime – didn’t reboot.

It was short (hour or so), but unannounced.

Alvotech has the worse customer support ever. These guys sent me multiple invoices while i cancelled my account. On top of that their servers has hours and hours of down time. I would suggest to stay away from Alvotech.

Terrible customer service. There is no apparent method to cancel the account, they will auto renew the contract WITHOUT CONSENT, and they threaten you with debt collection agencies when you do not wish to use the service any longer.

This is simply not true. I have canceled a server with them before, all was friendly, everything went smooth. My server got terminated at the end of the period I paid in advance.

I don´t have had any problems with them, my server was working fine erverytime i was their customer. When i have cancelled my account it was also without problems, i have just asked the support how to do it and they have answered to send a mail. On their site they are showing that the contract will be renewed when you don´t cancel it up to 14 days before the contract ends.

Alvotech is one of the worsts companies i ever had services.

    – cant use iptables with vserver so they have a firewall config on their control panel but it as very very limited features
    – horrible customer service
    – in 3 months the firewall just stopped working for 6 or more times without explanation and i couldnt activated it again for a few hours..i did sent a email to their support contact but when i get a response (after 8 or more hours) the firewall was active again and they told me that the firewall was always working and they said it just never happened (i have the logs to prove it).
    – had a lot of problems with network connectivity and they didn’t care..they actually said it was my fault when it wasnt
    – when contacting their support i had 30 minutes responses when related to payments but more then 10 hours when related with service issues..i actually didnt get answer’s to a few emails!!
    – I said that i was unhappy with the service and i could not work with them anymore because of their very poor quality service..i stopped the service and powered if off but after 3 weeks i received a new invoice. I told them i wouldnt paid and i didnt want to work with them anymore..their service was crap and i couldnt do anything with it. Actually i should have had my money back..but they told me if i didnt pay they would contact a debt collection agency on my country..all of this because of 23€ that i had to pay in advance (next 3 months) for a service that i wasnt using for more then 3 weeks and of course i will not use for the next 3 months i payed in advance!! They said that i didnt inform them 14 days before the service renew that i didnt want to renew.
    – read carefully their TOS (terms of service)!!

“They said that i didnt inform them 14 days before the service renew that i didnt want to renew.”
Which is kinda standard policy on many hosting providers. You are informed of this procedure when you make an order (if I remember correctly) and it is clearly stated on their website as well. You can’t blame them because you didn’t read the TOS well enough.

The TOS clearly states the re-new.
It does not state that you have to pay.
You also never accept any special agreement that would require you to pay.

Alvotech is one of the worst companies ever.
      Contact legal authorities immediately.

This is a crime organization rather than a hosting company.

By far worst host I ever had:
    -iftop doesn’t work
    -quota doesn’t work
-postfix stops working few times a day: so mails get stuck; starts working after cpanel reboot; log shows memory problem, which i have plenty available
-sudo reboot / also reboot as root doesn’t work, but that is ok, as long as it is stated somewhere obvious – it is not
-also very strange: cron doesn’t work
-apt-get update is not under my control (some packages cannot be updated in guest, so i have to wait for host packages to become updated
-speed is yet to reach gigabit, and is far better downlink – which is rarely needed: on average, speed is about 5MB/s=40Mbit/s
    -sometimes just stops working
-often unreachable for a minute or two – i also have written proof

It might be good for some backup purposes: otherwise, stay away. just stay away.

Oh, they do send out threatening letters: but when you protest, they just say to ignore those threatening letters…

    • Ahm buddy… sorry
      But…
Isn’t their fault. You bought a Linux vserver Unmanaged VPS. Is your responsability to know how to manage one of these boxes.
Probably yes, they have a couple of issues. I don’t know, I am not a customer. BUT, I have a vserver with Edis and I don’t have any problem.
If your OS install is screwed is your fault.

HAHA that is funny..if you are not a customer why are you defending them? Do you know there service? Did you ever talk to them? .. really funny..
I had a few of the same problems as newtesla..had postfix working for 3-4 weeks then suddenly it stopped for a few hours..like 12 hours or something…it was clearly a network issue…and they just didnt care..they always said that was my fault..and suddenly after that 12 hours..it started working without any explanation..and without any changes..reboot..or others…i asked what was the problem and the answer was always..well when i did get a answer… “what problem?..never happened..if the server isnt working it is your fault!”

        May 10, 2012 @ 8:40 am | Reply
        • Indeed, network issues aren’t your fault.
Your point about postfix, and cpanel and memory errors… I wonder who is the culprit.

Yes, you are right: i have leased unmanaged server from them.
        But:
-i didn’t do installation – it’s some kind of OpenVZ virtualizing solution, and it comes preinstalled with OS of my choice: my choice is/was Debian 6.0 64bit
-that kind of virtualisation works in such way that we all share same installation as they are on host; just in different userspace.
-customer support – guy’s name is Faruk – has informed me that quota isn’t enabled because they use that kind of virtualisation software which doesn’t have ability to allow me to set quotas; that info is nowhere to be found on website
-this is not my only server ;) and this is not my only virtual server: so, how come that this is the ONLY ONE that has a range of problems, when I set them almost equally; same policies, same programs, same daemons? Other virtual servers that i manage run like a charm.
and yes, this is my only server at alvotech, and that’s gonna change ;) => 0

I was patient enough: from september 2011, problems everyday.

        May 10, 2012 @ 9:20 am | Reply
        • And probably is your only one vserver.

Yes, again you are absolutely right: that is my only vserver – at alvotech. As I wrote.

But, maybe you prefer list of my servers, or maybe list of my clients?

Anyway, since you are not trying to become one of my clients, I won’t waste your time flaming … sorry if you expected that.

I have made up my mind, and the only reason I wrote these posts is because I don’t want somebody else to waste their time and money on a service that sounds too good to be true – and IS too good to be true. Took me several months, and endless phonecalls with my pissed-off clients, to find out where the problem is; there is another .de company which leases vservers for bargains, and they do accept credit card payments :)

Oh, one more thing: yomero, get a life. Seriously.
