LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

BinaryLane - $5/month 512MB KVM VPS in Brisbane, Australia

A little while ago I’ve been gotten in touch with Nathan, from BinaryLane. BinaryLane was first seen on LowEndTalk a couple of weeks ago, but I immediately felt they deserved a spot on there as well. Offering a $5/month service out of Australia is not something you see every day. Binary Lane was launched in February 2014, but their parent company, Mammoth Media Pty Ltd, was founded in 2002! Mammoth has been offerings VPS for a while now, though they’ve always been above LEB pricing. Binary Lane changes that. They use the same control panel as Mammoth uses, which has been custom built and has been in use for 4 years now. This offer is a true ‘cloud’ offer, meaning it’s actually redundant across multiple servers. Your VPS’s disk is stored on multiple physical servers so in case one host node drops out, another one can just take over. Host nodes run Intel Xeon E5-2695v2 CPUs with 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and SSDs. The bandwidth is naturally somewhat limited compared to the offers you’re used to, as Australian bandwidth isn’t cheap. IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity is included as well as automated backups. Feel free to leave your reviews in the comments!

Their control panel has some nice features, among which bring-your-own-ISO, elastic plans, a web-configurable firewall, adding a load balancer, resizing your disks, and the option to upload/download full backups. You can find their legal documents, like their Terms of Service, right here.

Wait… “true cloud”…? Wow, that’s a first, and not just a marketing gimmick this time. Nice!

the customer site says “Binary Lane has a asynchronous connection with 100mbit incoming (from the internet to our facility) and 200mbit outgoing (from our facility to the internet)” but the listing says 1Gbps uplink??? other australian offers are better so far

      > the listing says 1Gbps uplink

1Gbps uplink of the VPS node to their switches. You can probably get speeds up to 1 Gbps to other hosts within their DC or other VPSes.

      > other australian offers are better so far

How come? In Australia they likely have similar or worse internet connections, just don’t tell you as honestly as this provider.

Sadly this is very true. BinaryLane’s network appears to be *much* worse than almost every other provider in Australia (barring Exigent).

I assume that’s supposed to be

    512MB RAM

    instead of

    512B RAM

I signed up with them and after requesting a copy of my ID due to me trigger the system’s anti-fraud protection, had it provisioned. the server seemed pretty decent and response. Unfortunately a couple of days later I went to login and the server was offline and when I tried to login to their admin interface I got an error message from a page called “banned”. I got no emails from Binary Lane about this. I have no idea what happened. They apparently just killed my service and banned me for no reason. I hadn’t even done anything with the server yet except a basic apt-get update.

Not happy with this poor customer service.

There’s a “referer” field in their signup but variations on ‘lowendbox’ didn’t work. Are you missing out on a kickback?

I’ve been using them for quite some time now and apart from some BIG outages a few months back, their service has been pretty good.

    Signup and provisioning was fast.

The only thing that has been problematic is upload speed to the server (as compared to my old provider) – upload to the VPS of a 500MB tar.gz file took approx 1.5 hours.

That has been my only real concern.

Look at their terms, it looks pretty shitty. Why are forbidden completely valid reason to get a VPS – like hosting a game server or an IRC?
