BuyVM have been featured many times before on LowEndBox. We first featured them in June 2010 but since then they have became one of the largest hosts within the community. They have featured in all of our top provider polls, winning twice on the way. Servers are running on the E3 CPU and are SSD Cached. IPv6 is still not native – hurry up FiberHub, it’s 2013! I found this recent review & this one from NickM. It would be great if a few more BuyVM reviews were posted *hint hint*, especially after the move to Sin City!

BuyVM accept payments via Paypal and Google Wallet. They offer loads of awesome add-ons, such as: free Windows 2003, free dns & free 5GB backup space (BuyVM+), $3/month filtered DDoS protected IP addresses, $1/month offloaded SQL and more. You can view their FAQ page here. For more information, you can read their very simple to understand Acceptable Usage Policy.

your server went offline once a week, now is it stable?

      March 19, 2013 @ 11:54 pm | Reply
      • We had the 2 power outages and a network blip last week due to our LACP dropping.

Power is stable and will improve even more so in about 3 months when the ‘B feed’ power is installed :) As for the network, we’re removing some of the complexity from our network within the month which will make it so that LACP issue can’t happen again.

        • You mean that DC is now running on a single feed?

          March 20, 2013 @ 7:31 am | Reply
        • Correction, not that whole DC, but your hardware there.

          March 20, 2013 @ 7:49 am | Reply
        • The DC has a generator as well as UPS power, ontop of being powered off the local airports power grid.

The issue we’ve had was related to the generators.

What we’re going to be getting is a ‘B feed’ which means we’ll have failover power in the case that something happens to either the grid, generator, or UPS, on the other end.

You’re going to have a very hard time finding any LE provider out there that’s paying for a 2nd power feed just because it not only cuts into how much power the rack can have, it also costs them money.

With our move to a cage, though, we can get B side power w/o taking a hit to our available power :)

Is there a way to request a non-US IP or do you need to get caught torrenting in order to get one?

    • That policy doesn’t apply anymore and will be removed this week I think?

Torrents are just fine on any Frantech owned IP address.

Since you asked for post-LV move reviews, I’d be happy to supply. Thankfully, Francisco admitted above that they’ve had issues, because I’ve seen them in spades since the move. Node reboots once or twice a week for no reason. They’ve had at least one major network outage a month (if not more). Node performance (at least for my two purchased nodes) tends to range from average to very poor, depending on the luck of the gods. I don’t know what happened to the BuyVM of old but the post-Vegas BuyVM has me looking for another provider. (Stock isn’t as precious as it once was, so I do plan on checking back in a few months.)

    March 20, 2013 @ 6:28 am | Reply
    • Well, we gave a month of credit to anyone that asked for the month of Feb just because we knew there would be some network burps.

The latest was an LACP crap out and it could have happened in SJ too.

If you’re having poor node performance, by all means, ticket and we’ll look into it. We do our best to keep an eye on all nodes but we simply can’t given how many we have.

Ripping a DD hourly/daily isn’t a great way to ‘confirm performance’ on our part either =\

      March 20, 2013 @ 8:09 am | Reply
    • I should also add some last points on what we’re doing to improve the network.

LACP is being removed from our setup, as well as the software based router is being replaced. We have a Brocade CES 2024C that will be installed this month that will remove whatever last performance issues this software based router gives us. 1 – 2 of the blips we had in February were due entirely to me trying to tune the NIC’s some more. On the brocade it won’t get any better than it already is from the factory.

The LACP is being replaced with a pair of BGP sessions that will automatically load balance using multipath. This means that the only issue that could come up is a BGP session dropping, but at worst that’d just cause a minor slow down as we’d be shoving everything through half our connection. Fiberhub is actually getting a 2nd router setup on their B side power and will be putting one of our feeds over there. That way in the off chance they have to do network maint on one side of the DC, etc, we won’t feel/notice anything.

Power wise, FH has already addressed the issues we had as well as currently working to bring ‘B side’ power in place. This will mean that in the off chance that they have an issue on one side, the B side will carry us w/o a drop since we’ll put ATS units in place.

I know it’s been rough but the things put in place will make it more than worth it. That, on top of the performance adjustments Anthony & I are working towards, will make things even more bitchin’ :)

Thanks for the business thus far,

      Francisco

    Hello,

I strongly recommand BuyVM. I ordered my first VPS with them the 15TH October 2012 and still have it, never had a problem… Since then I ordered another VPS recently with no problem so far but I have to cancel the second because I no longer use it…

I think that I will keep my vps with them for a long time since they are really reliable despite recent power outages. (not they’re fault apparently).

I suppose that I should throw my two cents in here on BuyVM’s service. I ordered with them months ago and had no problems with the VPS– I didn’t really use it as much as I was hoping to. I find that their service is definitely well worth the price, minus their apparent competition whom seems to attack BuyVM at their most vulnerable point (case and point: the move to “sin city”). Coincidentally, I wanted to try out a few things that day and was unable to.

I suppose that I should throw my two cents in here with relations to BuyVM. I ordered their New York 128MB OpenVZ package months ago, and did not use it as much as I was hoping to. I kept it around for a month and decided to go and try a few things out with it. Oddly enough, I couldn’t access the VPS– Turns out that they were moving their San Jose nodes to Vegas! Their competition, on the other hand, had targeted BuyVM’s New York servers with a DDoS attack. Kind of a low blow, if you ask me.

Other issues with BuyVM that sparked from this situation have caused me to cancel my service with them, but for all intents and purposes they are still a quality budget VPS provider and I most certainly do recommend them. Just be aware that some of BuyVM’s competition are very, very jealous. That is all.

The only problems we’ve had have been mostly caused by me trying to always tweak things. It’s really a bad habit of mine.

I’ve been putting an end to it since it always seems to blow up in my face >_>

The way I understood it was that you folks were in the middle of moving your servers to the new datacenter and your competition decided to try and knock you out at the same time. I wasn’t meaning that as a negative thing– It just proves that the competition can’t handle your quality.

          March 23, 2013 @ 8:33 pm | Reply
        • That’s true :)

Since then in Vegas we’ve had a couple splats that were DC related but a few more that were entirely on me.

    WARNING! BECAREFUL OF BUYVM!

I purchased one of their kvm vps in December, and it immediately got cancelled for no apparent reason. So I contacted their sales. Here is a transcript. I am Josh, and Val is the support staff. I can provide screenshots as well. Just pm me.

    Hello,

Seriously, this is the most unhelpful support system I have ever encountered. I have read your TOS, and I still don’t know why. Now will you tell me or what? I’m getting impatient.

If you don’t, I will have to report you to buyvm because they are paying you for nothing, since you don’t provide support.

    Best regards,

Your misunderstanding is unfortunate, but the reason we require you to tell us what policy you were in violation of is to ensure that you have actually taken the time to read said policies – this is SOP and asked of all persons that disregard our TOS upon signup. There’s nothing we can do about “being unhelpful” if you’re going to simply ignore the instructions we give. If you wish to “report me to buyvm” you are more than welcome to – such reports come to me anyways. I’ll be sure to have a word with myself about doing such a fine job remaining patient with users that seem to willfully disregard our rules.

Again, we ask that you fully read our Terms of Service, and find the policy that you are neglecting. Once you’ve done so and we’re confident that you’re ready to abide by our conditions for retaining service with us, we’ll provide further instruction on how to proceed.

    ———

As you can see, I wanted to abide by the TOS, and I read them, but I still could not tell why my vps had been cancelled. I think it is the job of the support team to provide support (duh!) and tell me why and what can be done about it.

I have not tried their service yet, and frankly, I am afraid to do so since I obviously cannot rely on their support team when something goes wrong.

This also shows that their team is not qualified. When I contacted Francisco, another of their staff, he also refused to acknowledge the unprofessional way their support team dealt with the problem.

AGAIN, DO NOT BUY FROM THIS COMPANY! BUYVM SUPPORT IS RUBBISH, THEIR STAFF ARE NOT PROFESSIONAL!!!

Most likely they are going to try and find excuses. But this is an honest review of their services, and I hope that you will see it for what it is, the truth.

Sounds like you never read their terms and conditions, and you never denied violating their terms. It is in their right to terminate you if a violation is detected.

Sounds like you did something so blatant, it would be at least your responsibility to explain your actions.

I agree is it unprofessional for a provider to hide the reason your account was cancelled, but I have been a customer of buyvm’s for 2 years and only had excellent relations with them. My servers have had almost no downtime on record, and my support inquiries were all handled quickly and professionally. I also operate a legitimate business and within what is acceptable use.
