LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

BuyVM - $7/m KVM 2GB RAM / 40GB SSD / 2TB BW - in Las Vegas

BuyVM became famous in the low-end market for offering 128MB OpenVZ for $15/year. At the time that they offered it, people considered it unsustainable. Over the next year or so, startups struggled hard to compete. Many of them overselling to the point of horrible performance and going bankrupt in the process. The whole time, BuyVM continued to pull it off without showing any signs of stress, with excellent VM performance.

Over time, BuyVM’s prices stayed the same while others continued the race to the bottom. Their profitability increased with the continual drop in hardware cost, and they used their success to improve the quality of their service. Their control panel, Stallion, is custom made with features like backups, snapshots, IPv4 failover and anycast, as well as both AJAX and Java consoles.

Today, BuyVM breaks their tradition of never lowering cost to bring you the best KVM offer they’ve had to date. If you can’t tell, I’m a little excited to bring this offer to you. I’ll be making the first order. We’ll throw in their famous OpenVZ offer as well. Remember that DDOS protected IPs (Voxility) are $3/m extra. Let’s get to the offers:

        • It would be a waste of the hardware, honestly. We offer smaller plans, including 512MB and 1G, on our OpenVZ and regular KVM lines.

        • The goal of these new plans is to offer dedicated resources (CPU, RAM, etc).

We didn’t plan to add a $7.00/month plan but people really wanted it.

I just can’t justify splitting things any further, it’d end up with people only getting ~1Ghz dedicated to them at a smaller plan and there’s almost guaranteed going to be people trying to run excessively CPU heavy jobs on there and get upset/start a fight because we won’t let them use more CPU.

  2. Hello!

Thank you Jarland for the posting.

As mentioned, this is a complete overhaul of our current KVM plans. Current customers will get an email in the coming days documenting these new plans (and the others that came out along with them) and request they schedule a migration.

Overall this is a pretty major price change for everyone with the only plans not getting anything major is the 128MB & 256MB KVM’s.

Everything else is able to upgrade to the new plans and will generally be paying less than they pay now.

This isn’t going to expire, this is going to replace the current KVM lineup we have :) For now we’re just doing a soft launch while I finish some personal projects before I can get things merged into the website.

As of right now the longterm plan is to phase out most of our OpenVZ plans in favor of these new KVM plans. WE’re growing tired of coding around OpenVZ’s shortcomings so it’s a win/win for everyone.

Does 1 CORE VS 1 CPU Thread the same performance?

    June 24, 2016 @ 2:09 am | Reply
    • It’s a tough question to answer since both customers and CPU vendors alike smudge things. At least on Intel CPU’s each ‘core’ has 2 dedicated threads, so while people might list a server as 24 cores, 99.99% of the time it’s actually just 12 cores and has 24 threads.

In our case we allocate a total of 8 threads on a physical server with a 2GB plan counting as 0.5 of a thread (so a max of 16 will be on a server but since we don’t plan designate nodes, there’s a good chance a 2GB server will be neighbours with someone with 4 dedicated threads, etc).

Generally on the 2GB’s you should be able to use what you need but if you really need to ride the CPU 24/7 for encoding, heavy math work, some terrible coding you did using a busy loop then you should really look at the 4GB 1 dedicated thread plan at $15.00/month. Plans with truly dedicated threads can use them up 24/7 as much as they want without any fear of being suspended.

Do the resources scale linearly for the higher E3-KVM plans? For example, does the 8GB plan come with 4x the CPU, 4x the storage, 4x the bandwidth, etc. of the 2GB plan listed above?

Linode used to do linear scaling, but now their plans are all screwed up. They only give you 1.5x the CPU and 1.5x the RAM when you upgrade from the $40 plan to the $80 plan. Ditto with all the other big cloudbutt companies. I hope your plans are more rational :)

      $15.00 – 1 CPU dedicated, 80GB SSD, 5TB transit, 4GB RAM

If you provide that information to billing@ Aldryic will verify, mark your account good to go, and you’re on your way.

      Thanks for the interest!

    • Hi,

We had a wide scale DDOS attack on our Las Vegas location during Monday morning. It took us a little over an hour to get things back under control.

Sorry about that! We’ve been working to add additional safe guards for such things.

      • Fran,
Is the Always On gateway speeds posted here a real reflection on the performance of it or is there some sort of per user/connection throttle going on per user or connection established as a DDoS countermeasure, as I experienced the same slower speeds when pulling through the protected IP on your OpenVZ plans before?

When you’re in ‘always on’ mode inbound TCP is rate limited to around 10 – 15mbit.

I grabbed this deal about five days ago and had pretty awesome success. I had to put in multiple tickets throughout the Operating System install, both came with apologies because apparently the Stallion system didn’t make a boot loader for my install. Then after some days of using it as a minor dev testbed I somehow lost the password to windows. I contacted their support and offered to give any details necessary, once I had answered a question with them wanting to know which OS it really was I was told that they couldn’t give me my password because it’s too difficult to do that with their system. I thanked them and immediately cancelled the service. Something this small and benign should not be a deal breaker.

    Otherwise great service!

    • That’s odd.

For windows we can’t change a password, but we can for sure help with a password reset.

Could you at least get me a ticket ID so I can make sure I’m reading everything correct?

      • Josh:

Hello Franscisco, I apologize that I had not seen this reply before. I ended up solving the password reset issue on my own with the help of your wiki, when I asked Mr C’boäs why he wanted me to compeltely reinstall for something that took 2 minutes to fix he stated it was because he did not know that was an option. Understandable of course, I asked him to cancel my cancellation request and have continued to enjoy your product for about a month. Today I shot this same tech guy another ticket about massively upgrading our ram/SSD space etc and he told me to cancel my product and put in for a new product as upgrades weren’t a thing you guys do. I asked if I could get the install ghosted or cloned as installing DBI, MYSQL, dependencies, PERL, PYTHON etc takes a long time. I didn’t get a response back, im guessing this is another possibility he is “unaware” of. I looked this individual up online by name to see if I could get to a supervisor or manager, and the immediate first response in google is his very unprofessional public twitter profile; Wherein he says her thinks he has a drinking problem along with half naked photos of himself. I just stopped there, I have all the info I need to.

Overall the service was excellent, the customer support was awful. Since I can not upgrade nor ghost/clone this install onto another more expensive box I’m just gonna try another service, it’s the same amount of work but I think i’ve seen what I needed to from BuyVm. All in all, these guys seem like they just need better PR and a better-thought-out plan for customer support, as the only two issue I ever had the support tech claimed he had no idea how to fix.

        • Cloning or mirroring is possible, I’ve done it for other users just fine. Hell, most times I just migrate the person.

I’m sorry if things were a bit rough around the edges, I’ll work on improving that.

          • Josh:

Right exactly, Cloning and Mirroring is absolutely possible and actually pretty easy/time efficient. The same was the case for my original issue with the password reset, it is the lack of empathy for your customer that I was turned off by. I do not feel you should be apologizing, for every instance I can see of you responding is very professional. Instead your CSR spoke for you and spoke poorly.

I hope to reiterate that this service is great and as-represented but I had a one-off (hopefully) encounter that made it seem like the customer support did not care about solving issues, just closing tickets. I try to be very fair when reviewing things others put time, work, and effort into so please do not see this as me attacking you; however I was a customer who intended to spend even more money with you and was repeatedly disregarded.

Hello guys. I do not recommend this hosting. The price is good but the support is awful. I spent almost night trying to register my server. First the system marked my server as fraud. Than Francisco told me to wait until the billing department gonna answer me I explained to him that I need to move my server until morning he said that I should It was night I was waiting finally I woke up at the morning and what I’ve got:

    ***
You will need to send a scanned, unedited copy of your government-issued ID validating your contact information on file to billing@frantech.ca with a subject line of Ticket *****: ID Submission for verification.

    Aldryic C’boäs,
    Frantech Staff
    ***

Also I have to register my account two times because in my first time they just delete my account, because I asked them why my order have been marked as a fraud and as a mistake I opened two tickets. So guys be aware if they don’t care about their clients from the beginning, I can’t imagine what’s gonna be next?.. Wiping client server in a smallest suspicion or what?..

I am gonna share my story with this company. At the beginning I was surprised about prices and comments only one thing that confused me were some comments about false fraud detecting.
So I was trying to register my server and my request also have been marked as an fraud I opened a ticket the system said that billing department is not working so I contact through the online chat with Francisco he said that billing department is working (I guess billing department it is just one person – Aldryic C’boäs), so I reopened my ticket and after sometimes I’ve got an email:

    ***

    FranTech Solutions
We don’t appreciate our ticket system being spammed. Please find hosting elsewhere.

    Aldryic C’boäs,
    Frantech Staff

    ***

I contact to Francisco again and he said that I should register myself one more time. I did so, I asked him that I need to move my server until morning he said I should wait I was waiting until I fall asleep and in the morning I’ve got a new email from this kindly guy Aldryic C’boäs this time his mood was better so he didn’t delete my account and just wrote this one:

    ***
You will need to send a scanned, unedited copy of your government-issued ID validating your contact information on file to billing@frantech.ca with a subject line of Ticket *****: ID Submission for verification.

    Aldryic C’boäs,
    Frantech Staff
    ***

So right now the question is, are you really thinking that everyone should send you an ID for the company that I do not know? Not event Godaddy and Bluehost asking this kind of information. Who are you guys to ask us a copy of ID? How I could now what you gonna do with the scan of my ID? What is the reputation of the company that asking your ID without any serious reason for that. I am sorry guys looks like you just collection this scans and what is worst you are nothing on the hosting market but asking more than serious companies does.

I will follow your advice from the first email dear Aldryic C’boäs and definitely recommend all of you guys do the same because if they so easily deleting accounts what’s gonna happened if you will get a smallest abuse on your server or probably this guys gonna be in bad mood and just wipe your server.

Again for a company with 2 guys it is too much. It is just my humble opinion but I think it make sense.

That sounds frustrating. I had similar experiences with 2 big hosting companies, OVH and QuadraNet, who each asked for a copy of my ID. I think being classified as “fraud” though is a bit insulting.

I had been a customer of Frantech/buyvm for a couple years, and had few issues.

    • Nate:

If your billing details don’t match your actual payment information or you just enter it incorrectly (or “change” a few things so it looks real but isn’t) the fraud detection will kick in and remove your account. I’ve been with BuyVM for years and never had issues.

You have to understand that when dealing with strangers on the Internet that there will be stuff like this. They as a company don’t want to get burned by someone using stolen CC information or fraudulently represents someone they’re not. Just something that has to be dealt with.

      September 14, 2016 @ 8:53 pm | Reply
    • Hello,

I’m sorry if you had an issue at signup. Not everyone has to give their ID’s, but if there’s something suspicious then we do ask. It’s not uncommon in hosting these days given how much fraud happens.

With that being said, only a single person ever has access to the ID’s and they’re shredded once confirmed.
