CloudLinux Changes Pricing Lineup and Their CEO Talks to Our Community

CloudLinuxCloudLinux – a very popular specialized Linux distro for shared hosting – is changing the way it offers its products.

We are excited to announce a significant update to our CloudLinux OS product line. As part of our ongoing commitment to innovation and delivering the best value to our customers, we have decided to rename CloudLinux OS Shared license to CloudLinux OS Legacy. The “OS Shared” license has supported the most critical needs of shared hosting providers since the introduction of CloudLinux OS and will continue to do so under the label of “OS Legacy”.

This change is part of a strategic move to better align our product offerings with the features and enhancements we are developing. Our goal is to focus on providing new and exciting capabilities through our flagship products: CloudLinux OS Shared Pro, CloudLinux OS Solo, and CloudLinux OS Admin. These editions will receive all future feature updates and business value improvements, ensuring that our customers continue to benefit from the latest advancements in server performance, security, and manageability.

The community responded with tomatoes, And CEO Igor Seletskiy responded with a lengthy post:

I know people want to see a devil in us… but really… We changed the name. That is it.

We are not discontinuing CloudLinux OS Legacy. This is just a name change. There is no plans to discontinue it. The reason for the change – I was tired of saying “CloudLinux OS Shared Pro” to differentiate vs “CloudLinux OS Shared” (which is now CloudLinux OS Legacy). For people who are using Shared – it is just a name change.

It is hard to believe (at least for me) that this February, CloudLinux OS will be 15 years old. When we released it, it was a product ONLY for shared hosting. It was called “CloudLinux OS Shared”, and it was only about preventing one user from affecting all others in a shared environment. Many years later, and many additional products down the line, we realized that we can do more: We can make PHP hosting better, and not just for shared, but for every website. Yet, charging the same price for a server with one site, 5 sites, and 2,000 sounds seems wrong.

This is why we created CloudLinux OS Solo, Admin, Shared Pro. We also renamed CloudLinux OS to CloudLinux OS Shared.

Note that we haven’t added any new features to CloudLinux OS Shared for the past 3-5 years. I think the last one we added was limits for resellers. We just don’t see what features we can add to “Shared”. The product is good and serves its purpose. Also, I believe people that want to stay on “shared”, and don’t want to move to “shared pro” – just don’t value the extra features – as they are unwilling to pay extra $2/month for those features. I didn’t want to force those features on everyone. I still don’t want to.

As we invest more in more into making CloudLinux OS to be the best way to host PHP & WordPress sites – I really got tired of calling one of the flavors “CloudLinux OS Shared Pro”. I wanted to simply: Solo, Admin, Pro. Or Single, 5, 30, 250, Unlimited.

So, that is all it is … we renamed it. Otherwise, nothing changed, but the name.

Of course – if you really want to believe that we are all that terrible – enjoy. Yet, I hope 15 years working with us gives us at least some credibility that we care much more about being a good partner than about making an extra few dollars.
