LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

ClubUptime - $17.85/3 Months (+ Discount) 256MB OpenVZ VPS

Updated August 2011 — ClubUptime is officially in the dead pool. IP has not been resolving since 3 August. Please see discussion thread at LowEndTalk.

Matt from ClubUptime emailed in their April promotion coupon code. It is a bit complicated — it’s recurring yet only for a limited number of recurrence. Use promo code 50OffApril to get 50% off discount for 4 billing cycles, if you pay quarterly. That means $8.93/Quarter for their “Budget VPS – Level 1”, and fix at this price for the whole year. Afterwards it will be back to $17.85/quarter, but I guess by then some more flashy plans will be available. Together with their current “Double Up” promotion, you will get

  • 256MB guaranteed/384MB burstable memory
  • 40GB storage (doubled)
  • 400GB/month data transfer (doubled)
  • 1x IPv4 + 5x IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Direct sign up link here. Servers are in either Dallas TX, Seattle WA, or Washington DC (Softlayer DC’s). They just had their 6 year anniversary so they have been in business for a while. They seem to have decent performance, quick support, persisted through a 14Gbps DDoS… But you might want to review their ToS/AUP to make sure you can comply with it.

  1. Only 4 billing cycles, it will be more attracting if they extend the recurring time longer. :)

    • As I’ve said, 4 billing cycles = 1 Year (quarterly billing cycle). They might have something else that’s better after a year.

      • I agree, they’re rolling out now promotions quite frequently.

Hi LEA, I think the tag should be clubuptime-com :)

      • It’ll also apply to greater payment cycles, so if you pay six months at a time it’ll apply to two years. If you pay annually, it’ll apply to four years.

        • At the end of 4 years though, 256MB would be super-low end that can barely keep a WordPress 5.0 running with WP-UltraUberCache :P

I don’t understand this, the 256 MB will become low price yes, but if it can keep wordpress running today why can’t it run wordpress 4 years from now? Will wordpress become that bloated in 4 years?

Well, at the rate it’s become bloated in recent years… maybe. :)

As time goes on, it seems everything’s becoming more and more bloated. WP may have succumbed to creeping featureism, but I can’t really fathom why the various libs keep growing by megabytes at a time…

        • @dd — I have been running WordPress since the 1.2 days, and have my name credited inside the WordPress core source. I know how bloated it is these days :)

I don’t see anything mentioning 4 billing cycles on WHT:

      http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1036473

Does this mean if I click on the order link through WHT, there will not be a 4 billing cycle limit to this discount?

      April 5, 2011 @ 4:07 am | Reply
      • It’s the same order link that’s used anywhere on our site. The coupon code is what matters, and that’s the same coupon code listed here :)

We submitted a report to WHT yesterday asking that to be corrected, but they didn’t do it as of yet.

  2. ClubUptime is THE BEST VPS Provider adverised here. I’m with them since their last promo and my uptime and perfromance are greatert than all other of my lowEndBoxes… even comparable with y shared hosting with Dreamhost.

    April 4, 2011 @ 5:47 pm | Reply
    • Dreamhost hasn’t been any good xD

Well, my yearly plan ended in the past month, and wasn’t the best experience. Since November aprox they had a lot of problems, mainly with their VPS platform, every VPS was broken because they updated something without experimenting first. Also, the shared hosting server where I was, is always over 60-70% cpu usage, with big 100% cpu spikes. Yes, good uptime, but bad performance.

      • Ha no. I have been using DreamHost for about 5 years now. Definitely not have the best performance, but absolutely rocks every other shared hosting. I use it mainly for friends and families websites, where they might not be proficient on the command line.

        • Most shared hosts are great for small sites. Few are anything special. I’ve worked for many of the large common named ones in the past and I’ve seen it all: If it’s critical or important, put it on a high-end VPS or dedicated box. Also, KEEP BACKUPS! I can’t stress keeping backups anywhere near enough — Especially on a shared platform. I’ve seen the phrase “Sorry, but since you didn’t have backups, there’s not much we can do” go flying around way too many times.

Unrelated? Yes, but I figure it was worth throwing out there with people mentioning shared hosting.

        • Yes, dreamhost sells their control panel. Is very, VERY good and easy. Also they have backup systems and are funny people.

But not the best performer yeah.

  3. Just to note, we’ve extended the sale by a week since this ended up posted up on the last day of the sales original term.

@Steliyan: Thanks for the kind words. We really do try to be the best out there :)

you need to send your ID card to them :) Their maxmind system not working, I didnt get any call after few minutes.

I’ll send my ID card tomorrow.

    • The MaxMind system works just fine: There are some sporatic issues here and there with it, though. It’s not able to call every phone number around the world — just most of them :)

I order from another provider and they using maxmind too, I get their call and pass maxmind verification :) but not when using ‘your’ maxmind.

I need to wait tomorrow (until send ID card), I hate waiting, hehe, I need to setup this server backup asap.

Ugh.. I received the phone and the verification code, but after that i get this:

        MaxMind Error
MaxMind has deemed your order to be potentially high risk and therefore it has been held for manual review.

        :( :(

      • I wish more people were buying into our Xen platform. We’ve got nearly about 20-30 times more OpenVZ VPS’s out there than we do Xen. Our Xen platform is rock solid — We’ve yet to have a single cancellation over performance at all. The Disk I/O speeds in a single Xen instance are greater than that of a whole OpenVZ node, too. Our Xen platform is great, but people see the lower price of the OpenVZ and tend to go there.

If the Double Up promotion works on the Xen too I would get the Xen :)

Needed a place to put a remote MySQL server and my 123Systems’ VPS is not cutting it with the frequent network hiccup at Dallas.

        • The hard disk space that’s listed on our website is what you will get however. The post on WHT was accidentally made using our previous Birthday sale and we’ve decided to match the birthday sale.

The only thing we can’t double up is disk space on Xen plans. Xen can’t be oversold on disk space, it all requires it’s own “partition” built in blocks. I could hand you 10tb bandwidth if you wanted, but I simply couldn’t do double disk.

        • Arthur:

I find it interesting that you can’t simply give out Xen VPS2 and reduce the ram allocation for VPS1 purchase :)

That way you can get around the partition problem :)
I probably wouldn’t need 10TB of bandwidth but I might as well take it :)

        • It’s dedicated CPU time. With Level 1 / Level 2, you get a single dedicated CPU core. With Level 3/4, you get two dedicated CPU cores to your account.

I am wondering if I get a Xen VPS and don’t want the double up can I get 10TB bandwidth.

First time I’ve used Softlayer’s network and found that it is crazy fast, like 15 times faster per connection, via the Telia+Level3 route rather than HE+Cable&Wireless.

        • Whatever shows on the WHT thread is the upgraded RAM. The RAM is not doubled — As noted several times in the WHT threads and on here, it’s simply a series of typos from our Birthday thread that got carried over into this new one. We’ve decided to honor the RAM quantities in our current threads. What ever is up on WHT is valid now.

We can only implement the changes necessary to make it work in the middle of the night due to a reboot being necessary on the OpenVZ sub-systems. If you require it right now, we can migrate your VPS to a node with working IPv6 connectivity.

From my understanding, ClubUptime is run by three people, Matt, Andrew, and Brian. Don’t get me wrong, they run a tight ship there, and kudos to them for proving themselves to be a solid provider. Not to mention, three people is probably more than enough until they grow – but they are eventually going to need some staff, or to outsource some of the support department to a third party center. It looks like their business model is working and they are growing, and this is probably a sign of slow support until they hire more staff.

Either way, keep up the good work Clubuptime.

        • Hello,

That’s not how it goes on any of our plans actually: It’s one core for L1/L2, two cores for L3/L4. We’ve seen a few instances on OpenVZ where the client was assigned four cores over the past few days for some reason: We don’t intentionally allocate four cores. We limit core access to help keep our systems stable.

Also, on Xen, the resources are dedicated, so those cores are yours and no one elses to use.

My website went down for 36 hours with the recent screw up with the Dalvz4 server. Unfortunately it was a day after launching our new beta web-app and we lost a bunch of potential customers as a result. Updates were extremely slow from the team and backups couldn’t even be restored until the VPS was rebuilt, which was some 48 hours later. Had a couple of reboots and downtimes over the last few months but this was pretty bad. The support was the deal-breaker for me, no response to emails, no response to refund or cancellation request. Not sure what is going, but had better hopes for Clubuptime. Migrated over to QuickWeb where my other VPS servers are.

Club Uptime has gone downhill. I first started purchasing VPSs from them about 6 months ago. At first they responded to tickets instantly and were very helpful. Lately however, they have been deleting my tickets without even responding.

I am growing increasingly frustrated with their lack of any support. The last order I placed with them, took over a week fill. After waiting three days, I asked what was up. They said they were out of server space – a hosting company – out of server space!?!?! So, I replied to the ticket asking them to cancel, because I needed the VPS quicker than an indefinite wait. They promptly deleted my ticket and two days later filled the order.

I asked them to delegate rdns to me for a VPS, apparently they didn’t know what that meant and after a week decided they couldn’t do it…

…just throwing my two cents in.
