CurlHost - $2 64MB OpenVZ VPS

Update Oct 2011 — CurlHost.com stopped responding to connection on 4 September 2011, and from the last few comments it looks like Prakash has done a runner. Fail.

CurlHost Via this WHT offer. CurlHost “has just started out on WHT” as stated on the offer page, and is running a promotion to clear out their stock. They do have quite a few OpenVZ/SolusVM packages with instant activation under our $7/month threshold. For example:

  • 64MB guaranteed/128MB burstable memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 50GB/month data transfer
  • $2.09/month (Order link)
  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • $6.49/month (Order link)

The test IP posted belong to Tailor Made Servers in Dallas TX. I guess you might have all seen the template a thousand times. Both DNS are on the same cPanel box that also hosts the website. Domain registered back in October last year but has WHOIS protection so there is no way to see who is behind this “business”, who claims to high end Dell/Supermicro boxes. That alone makes it fishy enough for me to want to touch it.

Interestingly the domain was registered with Australian Style, whose registrar accreditation was terminated by auDA back in July.

  1. I’d be careful with these guys. A number of their pages return 404’s (including their acceptable use policy, company info page, etc). Also, their VPS and ‘Guarantees’ page is all filler text (Loreum Ipsum…). Their VPS page doesn’t even make mention of how much memory is with each system?

Surely if you were starting a hosting company you’d actually take care of these little things. If they can’t do this, can you trust them with your server/data?

  2. Concerns me too if they haven’t moved registrars after being told to do so over a month ago.

  3. I think “Australian Style” was only discredited by auDA but they might still be able to register .com/.net domains.

  4. It looks like they’re still setting the website up! But not a bad VPS Deal!

Maybe we will see more of them in the future, once everything is setup!

  5. Curlhost is totally inaccessible right now. I can ping their webserver, and the IP of my VPS but I can’t get to my VPS, their website or my VM control panel.

Also, the results of nmap on my VPS suggest that it’s no longer my server at that IP.

I just received this email from them:

“As you are aware that the servers have been facing stability issues for the last few days, it has been decided they would be taken offline on 15/10/2010 for further diagnosing. As such we would have to move all vps off the current server.

To ensure you get the expected reliability with the service, we have decided to offer Xen PV VPS of same spec without any change in pricing structure for all currently active VPSs you have with us. The servers are at Scranton and would need a change in the IP addresses. Therefore, we would like to request you open a support ticket requesting deployment of the Xen VPS as that would allow us to keep track of the status individually with each client. Once you have completed the data migration and DNS propagation, we would close the current OpenVZ VPS.

The current nodes have been in use for a few weeks now and do not have any issues. The issues we’re having with the current servers are very specific, limited to the particular hardware config and OpenVZ kernel.”

At least they’re doing something about it but it seems like a lot of trouble for such a cheap server. I also don’t understand why I have to open a ticket so they can track their work. If they want to track this work in tickets, can’t they open one for each customer with a script?

  7. Sounds like they might not have the resources — both technical resource and people resource — to do it properly?

  8. Anyone seen any new reviews about Curlhost or has anyone here used them ?

I know someone who is using them and he says it is quite good but I ain’t so sure having a look at a half complete website.

Can’t find much on WHT either so any links would be nice :)

Ok, my MAIN VPS (xen) is with Curlhost, and I am satisfied, enough cpu power for my gaming needs, good network throughput, nice I/O, and a really FAST support. The people is nice.

The website is incomplete yet, but their support is the best.

But specifically, do you want to know something about my server? Is the 512MB pack in this offer

      http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/curlhost-6-512mb-xen-vps/

Probably I will upgrade but the price isn’t the same anymore =(

I have one of their $4, 256 MB Xen VPSs. First week or so it was great, then I started seeing significant packet loss (up to maybe 50%). I opened a ticket and was pleasantly surprised. Replies were prompt, action was taken and the problem was resolved. Since then the VPS has been, in a word, stellar. It runs rings around all the sub-five-dollar/month OpenVZ hosts I’ve tried :)

Their website leaves a lot to be desired — and Xen is even available there yet. But I think this is a classic example of not judging a book by it’s cover :)
