Delimiter USA - $6 Unmetered VPS

Delimiter Via this WHT offer. Delimiter USA “was created to overcome the weaknesses of an atrophying industry — in our experience, more common than uncommon experiences for web hosting customers are poor service, unfair fees, and high prices for insufficient hardware.” (excerpt from their abput page). Nice design, and more importantly good price on their starter VPS. For $6/month you get:

  • 256MB guaranteed/1GB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • Unmetered bandwidth on 100Mbps link
  • OpenVZ

Interestingly, Delimiter USA has servers in Germany — or at least their website is hosted there. Domain has been registered since July this year (and last updated yesterday!) so pretty new setup.

Now the dirt digging part. The domain was registered by “Dann Fry” of “Victrola Vision, whose previous venture, VictrolaVision.com, has domain registered in March to provide some kind of hosting, but has already defunc. So was his previous venture “Valentrinne.com”. Update: According to Dann, the two domains were related to his web design show cases and have nothing to do with web hosting.

Well. The website looks decent. Hopefully it will stick around a bit longer.

  2. Their servers are in Germany, which was the irony part of the story, as their domain name is delimiter.US

    Must agree, so awkward.

I did some research, and hopefuly, if I’m right, they rent their boxes from Hetzner.de – who offer i7 servers from just 49€ a month (expensive setup though), it explains why the prices are reasonable. How ever, I did not like the fact that it is not clearly stated anywhere on their websie that their servers are located in Germany… Fortunately, this is an advantage for me, latency wise anyway, since I’m from Spain :)

  7. Hello,

This is Dann Fry speaking; I’ve been misrepresented here — “VictrolaVision” was/is a showcase for my personal website designs which has not been updated in sometime, but is completely unrelated to webhosting. Valentrinne.com is also unrelated and was not even my website. if the editors of this webpage could clear that up, I’d be grateful, since the incorrect information is tied to my name when someone Googles “dann fry” or “delimiter.us”.

    Delimiter will be permanent.

  26. Representative from Delimiter speaking —

Just to keep things straight, the above comments concerning downtime are about one of our VPS nodes, which has been troublesome over the past few days. At one point the whole network was down briefly, but that is resolved now, and the issue is isolated to the single server. We’re working to fix it with the ISP, and in any case, new signups at this point wouldn’t be on that server anyway.

    Also, we’re not a scam.

    “Hi,

Today we have taken delivery of four new servers in Frankfurt, these will alleviate some of the congestion issues that some of you are experiencing. We are going to be making a drastic number of updates today so we can finally put these issues behind us.

What does this mean? It means today is going to be a very bumpy day, we did not want to have to do it this way, but its near to impossible to do it any other way, the performance problems are hampering our efforts to rebalance the VPS’s across the servers and at the speed things are going this is going to take too long. By doing this we can rebalance the VPS’s today and by tomorrow we can put this saga behind us.

I am sorry for the late notice, I have just finished going over the plan with our engineers and frankly I believe this to be the best option to fix the problems quickly and efficiently.

We have recommended that customers simply go to their paypal account, locate the transaction and add a dispute noting that there is an agreed refund. The previous owners have been attending to the matter very promptly.”

wich maked the server useless for me i canceld it right after talking with support they should please supply me with an US_IP for the server but they refused with the reason that this is “normal”

The server I was hosting was play.mctradecraft.net. A very low-end, low recourse minecraft application for a very small gaming community (of 10-20 people). If this had gone well, we had planned on expanding, but we’re no bigger for the likes of Delimiter.

The day before yesterday, we signed on with them (VPS200 [This is the “advertised” 1.5GB Ram, 100Mbps UNMETERED plan]), and the server was created near-instantly and they gave a very sizeable chunk of memory and bandwidth for the money you spent. But the Achilles heel here is the CPU. If you look over their website they DO NOT advertise that anywhere and with good reason — they only “allow” you to use 200-333Mhz worth of it! They had the CPU’s so wildly throttled back a simple wget of a 10mb file took HOURS on a 100Mibt connection with wget putting the load at over 3.

After everything was uploaded I ran minecraft server for the first time (generally was putting a very small load on my little single core AMD Athlon machine (with 1 gb ram). On startup java consumed 99.9% of the CPU, the load soared over 10 for the most part of 5mins. Thinking that something may have hosed up in the transfer I downloaded the files, and did a test run on a RedHat system at home, it ran fine, never exceeded 1% CPU usage (even on startup) and only used considerable disk usage on startup. At this point I knew something was wrong and contacted their support department.

They made a BUNCH of bogus recommendations:
    1) Uninstall Apache (it was disabled lol)
    2) Don’t use minecraft 1.8.1 (I tried 1.7 with the same issue)
    3) Use the x64 version of CentOS — Ok so I reformatted/installed their image — same issue.

Now during this time I noticed something strange, when I logged into their control panel I saw something most unusual…

“You have 1.0 GB Guaranteed RAM, You have 1.9TB more Bandwidth to use this month” Yet what was advertised for that $20.00 I spent was 1.5G RAM and UNMETERED 100Mbps pipe.

Finally I contacted them again, and told them that I had a RedHat Certified Engineer login to the pc and say “It is impossible to run MineCraft on this VPS” (after their tech had stated in the tickets they had MANY minecraft servers running on concurrent boxes) and suddenly I got a LOT of cancellation emails… They had just shut down the machine, canceled the account, and told me to go fly a kite with a cancellation notice of “Customer dissatisfied with service”.

Now I could complain about the crappy CPU allocations, or I could complain about the time it took for their support department to respond, or I could complain about the packages not lining up with what they were advertising, but what it boils right down to is the shittiest customer service I have ever seen in my entire life — you could expect better customer service from an angry kid selling lemonade next to Wall Street. I have NEVER seen a service based business cancel on a customer simply because they filed a support ticket letting them know that an Employee from REDHAT certified the machine as inop to run MineCraft.

  89. I tried to sign up today. The sign up page was there and took all my information, but when I attempted to go to the payment page it kicked me out noting that if there was an error I could write email to: “review@delimitervps.com” so I did. That email bounced. I guess they are out of business now.

  91. Will:

    AVOID! AVOID! AVOID!

I placed an order with delimiter, paid in full, they didn’t progress the order. I raised a ticket asking for an ETA and they cancelled the order and kept the money. Absolute crooks! This is a scam.
