El Salvador is a big fan of Bitcoin. Back in June, they passed a law making their country the first in the world to accept Bitcoin as legal tender. And in September they launched the Chivo Wallet, which is a government-owned wallet to accept payments.
Now they have teamed up with Dr. Evil to launch Bitcoin City, a circular metropolis with a city monument in the middle that looks like a Bitcoin logo, to be powered by geothermal energy from the Conchagua volcano.
Sorry, let me repeat that in case it didn’t sink in: El Salvador is building a volcano-powered (presumably for mining energy) Bitcoin city.
They claim this will propel El Salvador to become “the financial center of the world” according to President Nayib Bukele.
Maybe. They will certainly need a massively improved Internet connection so perhaps soon we’ll see cheap hosting offers in Central America?
