LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Evorack - £2.49 128MB Xen VPS in UK IPv6 Promo

Evorack Jonathan from Evorack sent me an update of their previous offer. They are now IPv6 ready, and with the discount code LEB2011Spring at check out, their cheapest VPS is still at £2.49/month (~USD$4.08). Here is the direct link for signing up.

  • 128MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer
  • 1x IPv4 + /64 IPv6
  • Xen/Custom control panel

Servers in UK (test IP: 109.200.19.115 or 2a02:2658:1011:1::face). It has some pretty good reviews from their last post here, with good performance and quick support. They have been around since 2004, and as Evorack brand since June 2010.

  1. One of the best providers in terms of lowend XEN with stability, performance and good price at the same time. Its a shame this host gets less appreciation from the audience primarily because it does not offer SolusVM and has a custom control panel.

BUT the best thing is, their support is pretty fast (at least for me)

I love the “Low end box” concept, but one thing seems off: most discounts codes are a one-off, fixed amount. If I take the above deal and decide I want to pay annually (a good thing for the host!), I am stuck with just the fixed amount off and not 12x the fixed amount. (I get 3.50 recurring off a month or a year, paying by the month is much cheaper…)

    • Hi Joel,

We are able to offer you the coupon code you require for the yearly payments. For the above listed VPS128 plan, please use the coupon code LowEndBox2011Yearly at checkout

      Thanks

      • And if you ever want to change payment terms, we are very flexible in this regard. So you are never stuck :) Also, all of our coupon codes are recurring

        Cheers

Could you tell me which datacenters these are? Thanks.

  4. Hi Everyone,

Just to let you all know that the coupon code now works for all of our packages. This will give you £3.50 off every month recurring.

    Thanks

This is definitely one of the top lowendbox providers. I was initially scared off by them being in a datacenter that doesn’t
seem to be in an ideal location (was worried about speed and stability). However, it has turned out to be better & more reliable than some of the VPSes I have in/near London.

    • Thanks for the nice comments, Joe :) Please be rest assured that our servers are hosted in an excellent datacentre. We did plenty of investigations before picking one, and we are very satisfied that we made the right choice.

      Cheers,

I can also confirm that so far their peformance is excellent and unlike some other hosts there around they don’t complicate with one IPv6 address + some more on request but give “proper” /64 IP block. Their vps is a “keeper” for sure.

  6. Can those containers be used for setting up an IPSec VPN Server (using (open|strong)swan)?

What’s the deal with the “Firewall Rules” textarea on the signup document?

Looking forward to signing up once those questions have been answered to my satisfaction. :)

    May 9, 2011 @ 1:32 pm | Reply
    • Hi There,

Yes indeed, since our VPSes are based on Xen, you get full root access, meaning you can install whatever VPN software you would like.

The firewall rules allow you to specify rules if you would like us to configre our upstream firewall to protect your VPS. Most customers leave this blank, however we feel it’s a handy feature for those not familar with iptables.

      Thanks

      Jonny

The post mentions £2.49/month, but I actually see £2.99 (since there is “VAT @ 20.00%: £0.50”).

    • rds100:

The VAT is really not their fault. Move to live outside EU and you will not have to pay VAT :)

      • rm:

I live outside EU, but at that point it does not ask where I live, just shows the 2.99 price.
So will it change to 2.50 once I’d enter the address?
I know VAT might be not their fault but if it costs 2.99 with VAT, it should’ve been listed as such in the post.

        May 9, 2011 @ 2:48 pm | Reply
        • Yes, once you enter your address, the VAT will not be added anymore. Since we are based in the UK, by law, we have to add VAT by default, unless the customer tells us that they live outside the EU.

One exception to this rule is that if you are an EU business with a valid EU VAT number, we can exempt you.

          Thanks

        • Spirit:

Why? You don’t even pay VAT. And yes it go away once you enter non EU address.

          @Spirit
it is up to LEA of course, but I think LEB should list prices including VAT, or at least add a note about VAT, because a very significant percentage of visitors are from the EU.

          May 9, 2011 @ 3:01 pm | Reply
        • But then everyone who does not pay Vat would be confused by the pricing the other way. Basically just assume you have to pay VAT if you have to pay VAT. Other than movie theaters I do not know of anything else that advertises the price for a product including tax.

          May 9, 2011 @ 6:43 pm | Reply
        • @rm — noted. Sorry I am not in EU either so I don’t normally pay for those.

With WHMCS based ordering system, you’ll be shown VAT at the checkout, but the amount will be removed on the next step when you put in your address and hit “Update” to recalculate the final cost.

          May 9, 2011 @ 10:37 pm | Reply
        • I could have sworn that LEA usually does add a note about VAT.

  11. A first impression:

Ordering was very straightforward and easy.
Not so fast setup (40minutes), but that was to be expected on Xen (and it is still fast).
Support responded to my questions (reverse dns, ipv6 subnet) fast (5 minutes) – now waiting to get my subnet.

    Speed is good, feeling also.

    Only issue so far:
They use opendns, which is know to do “ad redirects” of dead (NXDOMAIN) domains – should be replaced by own nameservers or at least google dns.

    • Hi William,

Thanks for the feedback on the DNS servers. This is actually the first time I’ve heard about unhappiness about using the OpenDNS servers. Prehaps other customers could tell me what they think? I’m very keen to hear general opinion on this topic :)

I have no problem setting up our own DNS servers if customers would like us to.

      Thanks

Here is a detailed article on why OpenDNS is bad: http://www.cyberciti.biz/tips/opendns-sucks.html

Setting up your own servers is not necessary, you can use other public ones:

        Google: 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4
        HE.net: 74.82.42.42/2001:470:20::2

        • Hi rm,

          Noted.

I think I’ll switch to the HE servers as the routes to the HE network are really good from Evorack:

traceroute to 74.82.42.42 (74.82.42.42), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
           1 pfsense1.gosport.abpni.local (10.87.15.1) 0.191 ms 0.128 ms 0.131 ms
           2 113-19-200-109.gosport.uk.abpni.net (109.200.19.113) 2.170 ms 2.281 ms 2.001 ms
           3 245-16-200-109.rackcentre.redstation.net.uk (109.200.16.245) 0.576 ms 0.554 ms 0.528 ms
           4 205-16-200-109.rackcentre.redstation.net.uk (109.200.16.205) 4.426 ms 4.408 ms 4.382 ms
           5 10gigabitethernet1-1.core1.lon1.he.net (195.66.224.21) 4.453 ms 4.784 ms 4.407 ms
           6 ordns.he.net (74.82.42.42) 4.530 ms 4.508 ms 4.471 ms

          Thanks for the suggestion.

          Cheers,

          Jonny

        • To add to the “OpenDNS sucks the pony” discussion, the library here uses OpenDNS as it’s DNS service and it’s categories as a poor man’s method of blocking adult sites. How many times have I moaned about a site being blocked?

Setup was fast, can’t login with the initial password, but they managed to get it fixed, speed is ok, I got 7ms to my other server at RBX France (nice peering option) and under 200ms to all my US based VPS (bit slow to me) and speed OK from Indonesia, I got less than 265 ms from JKT, (connection trough india, which I lost 190ms there, yikes).

So far things are OK for me.
