FastVPS - $2.50 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Scranton

FastVPS.co Erik from FastVPS emailed me their “Boxing Week” promotion, which was also posted on WHT — with lots of replies there already which might be a good sign. By the way, Boxing Week “is a period of six days or more that starts with Boxing Day and ends with New Year’s Eve” so I might be a bit late posting their offer — we’ll see. It’s a 50% off recurring discount when you use promo code boxingweek. It applies to all their OpenVZ VPS plans except for the “FAST $12/YR”. So these are their low-end plans:

  • FAST $12/YR
  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 1TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 500GB/month)
  • $12/YearDirect signup link

  • FAST256MB
  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 30GB storage
  • 2TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 1TB/month)
  • $1.50/monthDirect signup link after discount
  • FAST512MB
  • 512MB guaranteed/1GB burstable memory
  • 60GB storage
  • 4TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 2TB/month)
  • $2.50/monthDirect signup link after discount
  • FAST1024MB
  • 1GB guaranteed/2GB burstable memory
  • 110GB storage
  • 6TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps (upgraded from 3TB/month)
  • $6/monthDirect signup link after discount

Payment in either PayPal or AlertPay. Yes I know on the WHT post it says “cut by 50% our price on Semi-Annually and Annually Billing cycle”, however tried on monthly billing and the coupon code still works. Servers in Scranton PA which I presume would be with VolumeDrive (test IP: 199.168.142.37). Personally I think $2.50 for 512MB/1024MB would probably be the best value here. There is no need to commit for the whole year, (almost) everyone can afford to lose $2.50, and 512MB is plenty for many applications. They are using Xeon X3450’s with 16GB memory and 2TB SATA. IRC, Gameservers and Shoutcast are allowed, according to Erik.

Domain itself was registered by “Nicholas Eouani” in Florida in October 2011 which makes it merely 2 months old. However the registrant email address led me to a different person — “Emeric Olenga” of Montreal Canada, who was on WHT previously running a hosting company which he dumped 4 years ago. Anyway, I would still treat this as a new company and the plan is “too good to be true” at the moment. Some brave hearts would definitely give it a try, and we’ll see how things stabilise over the next couple of months.

I know but I don’t understand why a company would use .co instead of .net/.com or their local tld.

        • Christian:

.CO is quite popular and it’s pushed like the “new .COM” by registrars.

          December 31, 2011 @ 3:02 pm | Reply
        • lbft:

The main advantage of .co is that, like a lot of ccTLDs, there are pronounceable domains available.

The registrars are pushing it because they want everyone who owns a .com to buy the .co to match (hooray, more money).

I signed up before it was listed here on LEB and I cannot recommand FastVPS; Surprise surpirse, their one and only node is overloaded.
I’m on node Alpha and I’m VMUser #66. Some other folks over at LET have signed up as well, and are also on node Alpha and are VMuser #77 or so.

At the moment, the node is being abused once again. My VPS has been slow the past 2 days.
Erik used to answer tickets very fast, but now I don’t hear anything from him anymore.
BTW they have a ‘no refunds’ policy, just so you know

Burst is more than kind of shitty, I just recently had a long ordeal where they charged me for a dedicated server after cancellation. They tried to charge half of the cost of the server due to them having to “investigate” my claim lol. My bank blew them out of the water.

Scranton makes me think of someone else not Uptime. I won’t mention any names just causes grief but I avoid them like the black plague. IDC if the data center is a different one then this other company uses or has, I still will not take the chance.

UptimeVPS us2 node was on VolumeDrive (E3-1230). Now I have my own dedicated server at VolumeDrive, and interestingly my IPs are on the same subnet of the one I got from UptimeVPS. I tried to get details about “Ken” from VD, but as always they remained silent, just like their tech support (at VolumeDrive basically you have no support and you are on your own LOL).

So I decided to throw away a few bucks and try it out.

Ordered on 12/31 8pm PST and I got this email on 1/1 12pm.

    Dear Customer,

We have received your email regarding your VPS but we put all of our resources today to settle the situation quickly.
we had a server ready to receive you but by installing a client on it this morning we observed a bug and we asked the server to be replaced.

We are currently building new servers to activate your VPS on it.

This will take a few hours, but not worry your billing date will change and you will not lose anything. thank you for your patience.

    I have full 100Mbps speed, a mid-range I/O and access to two non-throttled cores of an L5420.

    I’m not complaining for my $2,50 ;)

Looks like they’re indeed planning something, just received this mail 30min ago:
    Dear Customer,

Thank you for your patience and your support, we have almost finished the installation of new nodes servers.
following a decision of the management your VPS will be transferred to a new node server.
We have no choice but to take this decision because our current supplier is not able to provide the necessary support to guarantee a quality service.

Support will be back after the completion of the migration because all teams are assigned to it for this to be completed as quickly as possible.

You will be glad of the new servers.

    thank you

So I’m being transferred to a new node, and they complain about the “current supplier”. Does that mean the new node won’t be VolumeDrive, I wonder?

If it is not instant, even for a few days, those words should be removed from their site.
They say 24/7 support which is also bollicks.

Not really, I can advertise 24/7 support even if I never do offer support as long as there is at least somewhere for you to send me an email which is accessible 24/7. I’m aware of lots of people who use this “tactic”.

I thought I was supposed to be getting moved to a new node, but if it’s happened then it hasn’t fixed the iowait problem. Massively overloaded nodes, do anything involving disk writes/reads and the whole thing grinds to a halt.

Looks like they are cramming all of us on this 16GB Ram Node in Miami, FL. Just wait till someone abuses the node, we will all go down but I hope this won’t happen. But hey, this is dirt cheap!

According to the email I just received they’re migrating everyone to some other server with new IPs.

    Here’s the most interesting part:

In order to avoid losing your data during the migration, we will create you a new VPS on one of the new node servers on January 16.
You will then have until January 23 (one week) to transfer your data to your new VPS.
During the duration of the period of one week, your old VPS will always be online, but it will not be visible from your SolusVM control panel because your new VPS will be visible on it. You will be able to access your old VPS only by Shell (SSH).

I wonder why they’re not just migrating the containers across…

To no surprise, there were some slowdowns and abusers leading to downtime. Been decently stable for a few days until last night, followed by a reboot.

I got this VPS to see if a light seedbox was right for me, and it’s not worth the hassle, along with the instability. I’m going to just cancel pre-migration.

Our servers are powerful and stable, a high-speed network and a serious supplier. Here, the result, since we moved to Kansas City, all of our customers are happy :).

@Francisco, we have spent thousands of $ on servers just this month and we have the bandwidth required to transfer our customers’s data. But to avoid that data are corrupt, we prefer to let our customers address this aspect.

Anyone with a CPU problem, please send us a email to support and we will fix that asap.

This morning, we had a kernel crash and lately, we had a problem with a hard drive failure that make the server go down for more that 12 hours (the time we used to transfer our customers data from the old hard drive to the new). We are working with the datacenter to fix the problem on this server.

    Dear customers,

Your vps is down because the datacenter (datashack.net) null routed our ips range so your vps is down.

The following ranges have been null routed for being target of attack:

We were unable to narrow the attack down to a single target IP.
-- Best regards, Rebecca ############### We are waiting after them to remove the null route on our ips. Erik A Sincerely

    then

Absolutely worthless company, check this out:

Your VPS was suspended because we found that you are abusing of the server Disk i/o:

    root@fastvps:/# top
    top – 00:08:09 up 3:04, 1 user, load average: 2.09, 2.73, 2.26
    Tasks: 24 total, 1 running, 23 sleeping, 0 stopped, 0 zombie
    Cpu(s): 4.2%us, 1.3%sy, 0.0%ni, 25.5%id, 69.0%wa, 0.0%hi, 0.0%si, 0.0%st
    Mem: 1049600k total, 52324k used, 997276k free, 0k buffers
    Swap: 0k total, 0k used, 0k free, 0k cached

If downloading from the server via SFTP at a maximum of 20mbit/sec is abusing the disk IO, then I guess I’m an abuser. Literally nothing else was running on it. If it can’t handle disk IO of less than 3MB/sec without spiking, just how many customers are they cramming on a node? Pathetic.

    The funny part is:

We will unsuspend our VPS, but you must fix this issue.

I must? I must fix their horrendous overselling? Well, I’ll do my little bit to alleviate the overselling. I just told them to shove their VPS.

From what we have seen on this website (ipap.co anyone?), it’s almost like when the owner’s guilty conscience wants to scream out to the world, “PLEASE PLEASE DONT BUY THIS, YOU WILL REGRET”, it makes that person go and actually register a .co domain. Even a .biz is more reputable than .co (or actually it might be not).

Last night when we suspended your VPS, we are able to test and see the difference on the the server disk speed…
You are running nothing on your VPs and your load average is over 2 with 3 cores?

Forgive me for downloading from the VPS at ~20mbit/sec. If your hardware can’t handle that, you should really give up running a VPS company.

You see my post on LEB? So what? I told you to cancel it before I posted here.

People can see that my CPU usage was low. The load was purely due to iowait which is due to your bad management of the nodes. 2MB/sec grinds your whole node to a halt?

          You should be ashamed.

    • Ricky:

Seriously. I pulled 3-7MB/s when this all started, but after the nodes were packed, I maxed out at 0.5MB/s. After sitting on that for a few weeks, I decided to just cancel.

Just cancel my VPS, I’m done with your company. I just got suspended again, and all I was doing was downloading from the VPS via SFTP. Nothing else was running. If your shitty overloaded nodes can’t handle that without load spikes due to iowait, maybe you should stop cramming so many clients on each server, instead of suspending people for attempting to use what they’ve paid for.

Its fraustrating,is FastVPS going to get my site back again and install the direstadmin? Do i have to suffer as a customer from only day 5? Afetr failing through emails i decided to come here. They might be a good company but new i do not know, but so far my experience was not good and kind of scared to use their service

In four months they moved my vps from Florida (no Scranton) to Saint Louis, later to Chicago, and now to Phoenix, changing the ip and without asking me. I have lost all my data twice. Sometimes the network is veeeery slow. Every week they reboot the server, not good uptime, many problems, ddos attacks, etc.
I give up. It is very cheap but also very bad.

  58. hello,

We never used a server in Saint Louis or Phoenix.
Please send me your Node server # and i can give you the server uptime…
our average uptime is 1 month because we make maintenance on our servers.

We the your VPS become slow, send us a email, we will check… many time is because one of our customers are under attack or one of our customer VPS become abusing of the server CPU.

That’s funny Eric , I’m sorry but you guys have the most miserable hosting I have ever seen in my entire life
Always off line , never reply to tickets mostly , and when u do it’s after a week or 2 and even when you do reply you have no clue how to solve the problem and always have excuses like brute force attack or whatever attack or maintenance or moving blah blah blah , you changed my ips 3 times and I. Each time I lost my data because you just go off line for a week with no notice . I’m sorry but hard truth is your hosting is a joke

+1, this mob are useless. I didn’t expect much in the way of performance for $2.50, but no matter how much you pay, you should get:

1 – what you’ve paid for in terms of resources
      2 – uptime

It seems like they change datacentres a lot. Avoiding paying bills? Taking advantage of first month free offers? Either way, the service is absolute shite. Downtime, reboots, multiple server moves… Worthless service.

We have thousands of happy customers. If an attack target 4 servers at the same time, it’s normal that technical support is slower … instead we send the updates to all affected customers., that you do not tell.

    • It depends on which server you were, if you were on the server 20 or 10 is normal, we had many trouble with these servers … trouble with the hardware that the data center could not detect before the crash and trouble with spammers or other individual who used their VPS to attack thousands of servers or other who was attacked … but our other dozens of other servers had no problem …
Happiness is that now we have no more hardware problem (the servers at fault was changed) and indesirrable customers saw their accounts terminated quickly.

Erik, don’t talk crap. Pretty much every customer here has had trouble with your service. I’m sure that if we checked other forums, we’d find the same.

Are you seriously saying that every customer on here had the bad luck to be on one of your “bad” servers? And what about the two server and IP changes?

You can’t defend your service, it’s just bad. Your servers are overloaded, you can’t keep them online, and your customer service is terrible.

When most of this forum is complaining about your service and hosting reliability, KNOW that you have a problem rather than defending yourself. Customers are right. Work on your service and support and don’t show excuses to customers. Customers expect what they pay for. By the way I was laughing at Eric’s thousand of customers comment. Good luck with your company but I don’t see it in 2 years if you don’t do something good about it!

Plenty of people had trouble now with your service. You blamed me saying I was overusing drive IO when in truth your server was overloaded/broken. If you knew anything you’d have seen that I wasn’t the cause of the iowait.

However, I can still get to my VPS on the SSH and all looks like it is running.
I only bought it as a learning package, I wasn’t planning to run FaceBook 2 off of it. It does seem very unreliable, but then I only paid $12 or so for the year. Certainly would not pay for one of their beefier packages at the moment.

I purchased 85 servers from them at a very good price 2 months ago and I’m very happy.. they gave my a whole dedicated server just for my vpses.. all my servers are still running perfectly but their website isn’t.. they’re a victim of some dirty A#####E host or something, they’ve been hammering their website with DDOS attacks and after the move to france they bought a dedicated server just for their website.. but apparently they’re still a victim of hacking attempts.. I still believe in them and think they’re the best host price-wise..

It all started so well, after I signed up I got a nice email with all the details and it was all set up. Installed and ran MySQL without problems. But then it went downhill, I got a series of emails saying SolusVM didn’t work and that their servers had been taken offline due to hacking. Then their own home page would not work anymore. One would expect some emails giving updates. Even after opening the PayPal dispute I didn’t get any email from them. The RAM allocation is good for the price, fingers crossed it actually keeps going.
