Forever Hosting - $3.60 512MB OpenVZ VPS

Updated February 2012: Forever Hosting is unfortunately, not forever. It died somewhere in 2011, and it’s homepage has been showing cPanel login page for a while.

Forever Hosting Michael from Forever Hosting has been sending me new offers. Since he has put in quite a bit of effort responding to enquires and issues from his previous offers, I am posting FEHosting’s latest exclusive deals here again.

  • Promo code 40OFFSALE: 40% off for life. Any payment cycles.
  • Promo code 70Lowend: 70% off your first monthly bill on any VPS package.

So with the first promo code, you can get “VZBronze” (direct sign up link) for $3.60/month recurring.

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 175GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

You get to choose between Scranton PA or Manchester UK for your VPS location. Domain registered back in August 2010 and I think the reliability is still to be tested.

    • Hello Tom,

And yes three bad reviews You can’t make them all happy. We try and do our best to make everyone happy but it just don’t work out that way.

We are a good company and we never wanted to ended up on the dead pool because we never died! We gone down for a few days on ONE server, I am very sorry about that but if you check now that server has a great uptime. It’s been about 1 or 2 months now past all that.

If you have any questions for us do let us know!

I’m sorry you feel that way. If you can give me a ticket # of where you think we are unprofessional ? I would like to look into that as we are very professional and stand by our rules. If you can’t even give me that then i see that review as fake and should be deleted.

        • Hi ztec,

Can you care to tell me a bit more about that. I am sure it had to do with your cPanel. oh and you got a year package for only $30? and you think you get free cpanel for the year aswell. I am sorry that is not the way the promo code worked and you got told this a week later when you wanted to upgrade. If i am thinking of the same issue do let me know =) I could not tell you why you never got a refund as I have no clue who you are. We deal with many many clients and it’s hard to remember your names on here.

Well do you think you can still make things right after a couple of months?
I still got the memory of some very strange and unprofessional emails ( like I never received before ).

And the reason I couldn’t get a refund for my prepaid year was because “I wasn’t nice enough to your staffmember”, in some way that changed the law of commerce in her mind. In fact I was very polite for the way there was spoken to me.

After some weird emails and zero effort to fix the relationship from your side I decided to let it go and move everything important from the VPS.

P.s. If you’re still willing to fix this I’m open for anything — don’t come up with the same story as your other staffmember though.

Yes maybe we sent out one bad email NOT many as you say!

    • Hey Tom, don’t believe what you read on WHT. I left there for a reason and I was sort of a Co-Founder with Matt Freeman back on 2000 of WHT and I even saved it from a DB meltdown when it was still owned by RackShack/EV1.

WHT is so downhill by now, if someone there told me “Good Day”, I would look out of the window to see if it isn’t the Night ;)

I am a customer with them, had a little issue in the Scranton Lot, which was probably even my own fault, and got moved to LA now. Blazing fast and even Debian 6 as I just discovered … Michael from support is very awesome and 100% pro & available all the time (does he ever sleep?? lol)

And all that for a bit over 3$ (with coupon) … are you kidding me?

I can fully tell you we are stable for a big site. We had a issue with our support team we had setup and I am very sorry for that. We don’t need to mass email each client about the UK servers We don’t have away to only email UK servers at this time. We did post news everywhere we could and still deal with support issues. We didn’t reply to sales because we think it’s best off to deal with our clients then try and get more. If you do want to test us out use the 70% off promo =)

Section 17 of the agreement seems quite restrictive.

Users may NOT initiate the following on our servers:
    – Run any process that requires more than 8Mb of memory space, more than 30 CPU seconds, or use more than 5% of all available system resources at any time.

    – Run stand-alone, unattended server-side processes at any point in time on the server. This includes any and all daemons, CGI proxy servers (we allow PHP-based proxy scripts under our Proxy Hosting plans only), and anonymizers.

We’d be looking at running our own software on the servers, which may use more than 8Mb of memory, may use more than 30 CPU seconds, or potentially 5% of system resources (I don’t know what percentage our VPS is limited to).

Also, it would be a standalone application, as it is to support client software running on a person’s personal machine. Is this kind of thing possible, or forbidden under these terms?

This first point seems overly restrictive even for a casual Web server.

I signed up for 3 of their “Budget #4” ($15/month on the site) plans and they were set up pretty quickly. 2/3 were up and running well right off the bat. The 3rd one ran into some issues, one mistake on my part during the order, then some technical issues on fehosting’s side. It took a bit over a day to get the last one sorted out but on the upside Michael here remained pretty responsive the whole way through. The VPSs seem good so far and responsive support is about all I ask from a newer provider. Now lets see how they perform over time.

The disk I/O is pathetic. I cant test it with hdparm because it returns “Permission denied” even when run as root.
Running two different installs, one Ubuntu the other CentOS, even the simplest task takes ages if has to hit the disk at all.
From the their stock install of Ubuntu, it took FIVE(5) HOURS to perform a “apt-get upgrade”.
Additionally, the stock install of Ubuntu comes pre-loaded with Apache2 and MySQL, which isn’t cool if you didn’t intend to run a LAMP sever, or like to have custom installations of these.

Ever since I’ve got vps, I already acknowledged that the machine is fast.
but the biggest problem is that I can’t resolve DNS with this server, because the i.p

I kept asking to fix this otherwise nobody can use this, but no avail yet.
If they fix this, this could be one of the best m/c., but…

  32. Just an update.

I got the trial for the 512/1024 plan in Scranton.

Pretty decent network, sometimes I can’t reach the 10MB/s but 5MB/s is a good average.

The I/O is pretty bad, honestly. Sometimes I can get like 30MB/s. today I have like 600 KB/s. I am experimenting with little ramdisks for critical I/O operations.

6 days uptime, at this moment, no issues.

The CPU performance is very good. cpuinfo says I have 2 cores of a Q9550 capped at 1Ghz, but I can push A LOT in these baby http://browse.geekbench.ca/geekbench2/view/370336

If this mantains well (except I/O), maybe I will move some services to this machine :D

At this moment, just playing :D

    • Hi,

Yes we known about these I/O wait issues. And we have a fix in place for this. To add new harddrives on these nodes that have this issue are the older servers we have. we have been putting new servers online with new hardware. For us to make this work is to move everyone to the new servers but that will take time. But we have big plans for our clients to make them happy one way or another!!

  37. Running 3 sites on one of these VPS plans. The speed is, well, I would almost say incredible actually. Having tried two other VPS services, which were abysmally slow ad bad support, I have had a very pleasant experience. I am in the new LA site. The machine rocks. 3 websites, DNS server, MySQL, Virtualmin, i/o, it all runs fast. WAY faster than the other two VPS providers, and really as fast as a dedicated machine I used to run the sites on. I had one problem with the provisioning at the new site, got less guaranteed ram than the advertised amount. Submitted a ticket, and, they ended up giving me more RAM than I should get. I suppose that was customer service! Highly recommended. Though, admittedly, have not been a customer for long, just several weeks.

  43. Have no idea what Jim is on about, I have had a VPS with FeHosting for nearly 3 months (since this offer) and have had no problems at all.

Speed is good, support is good (not that I have really needed it other than to turn on tun/tap), infact earlier this month I cancelled my BurstNet VPS moving the sites to my FeHosting VPS.

I would prove this by posting the uptime, but 3 days ago I tried to upgrade the Linux distro and it went a little wrong. Neadless to say I just logged into the control panel and restored the backup I made 30 mins earlier and within a few mins it was back exactly as it was.

    Very happy with the service.

    May 21, 2011 @ 6:13 am | Reply
    • I take it all back.
26th May I reported slow IO

      dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
      16384+0 records in
      16384+0 records out
      1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 211.185 s, 5.1 MB/s

I was told they were working hard to fix.
I can’t say if it was ever fixed because I decided to move my two sites (which were only dev sites so no traffic other than me) until it was sorted. (10 seconds wait every time I reloaded a page was getting tedious). Today I logged in and did the same test,

      dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
      16174+0 records in
      16174+0 records out
      1059979264 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 472.523 s, 2.2 MB/s

(Yes nearly 8 mins to copy 1.1GB)
Contacted support again requesting a change of node and got the following response:

      Hello,

It would be slow because we have other users on this node aswell. a VPS is not a dedicated server You don’t get full disk to use as other users are doing the same thing.

do try dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=2k conv=fdatasync as most users will not need anything higher for a VPS. these are Budget VPS Servers with that sometimes the server does slow down. If you want we can upgrade your plan to one of the Prem package so you can use more disk. Moving your VPS to another node could help but i can’t say it will.

Please let us know if you have any questions, or require further assistance.

      Best Regards,
      — Michael

I understand with a budget VPS you get what you pay for, but hey looks like sometimes you do not even get that.

      • Andy,

On the LA node, using Michaels dd command, I get the following:

        dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=2k conv=fdatasync
        2048+0 records in
        2048+0 records out
        134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 4.27379 seconds, 31.4 MB/s

        fwiw

Not sure a huge dd is a reasonable test. As a VPS user, I would hope a guy copying a large amount of data WOULD be slower, just like a guy using more than their share of CPU.

Your better test was your 10 seconds to load a page, presuming this is a normal page without a lot of processing of course. That would be bad. On LA, I don’t have that issue. It’s responsive on typical PHP pages. If that helps you.

        • Hi Steve,
My node is in Manchester so they can’t really be compared. It was a simple wordpress blog, so no huge amounts of processing. Not a “Public” website, just used it for testing.

  44. Hi,

And yet you told me this…
    Hi Michael,

I have looked into it a little more and if I use a smaller test file it is much quicker, not sure why that would be, but given I will not be writing huge amounts of data I guess I can accept it.

    andrew@vps2:~$ dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=2k conv=fdatasync
    2048+0 records in
    2048+0 records out
    134217728 bytes (134 MB) copied, 5.10682 s, 26.3 MB/s

    Thanks

    Andy

So what is the issue now? I did tell you i would move you but It may not help. It also could be many other things. And the server you are on is not that loaded anyways. Thanks for the feedback anyways even tho you DID get what you paid for and still are.

Erm, the same one as I posted above! 2.2MB/s doth not a server make, hence creating the ticket.

“I did not get what I paid for, that was why I ended up moving the sites while you looked into it and submit the ticket.” Funny thing is one of the other tickets you made YOU say it was OK and the thing is NOW it’s not.. What made you change your mind in why it don’t work for you? You also say you did not get what you paid for then what did you get? a working unmanaged vps with solusvm? if not then there is an issue right? If you want a Fully Managed VPS then you should of picked one with us as we do offer Fully Managed Servers for users who need the help, but most of our users know what they are doing.

You been with us for some time now and we are about to hit our 1 Year and got big plans for the year 2. with that we are adding more area’s for our servers, more promo’s and More Package’s with cPanel/WHM and Directadmin for Free! • The really funny thing Michael is your response to my ticked when I said I guess I can cope with the poor hard drive IO.
          Hi,

Thanks for the update. Yes i can see big files have a wait. We are working hard to fix these slow speeds.

Then you did nothing. What made me change my mind was that it went from 5.5MB/s when I opened that ticket to 2.2MB/s when I opened the next. I am sure you can work it out but just in case that is more than 50% slower than when I originally reported the problem. That is what changed my mind especailly when you had said you were working to fix “these slow speeds”.

As for your insinuation that I do not know what I am doing, I am not the one who tried to fix poor disk io by throwing more RAM and CPU cycles at the problem.

This could of been over some peek time of the server. I have added more Core's to your VPS and up the CPU time for you. You will need a reboot to show this and to clear out any lock ups.

After the server was re-imaged yesterday I ran the same test again and there was no improvement, clearly by not knowing what I was doing I was slowing it down

I suggest that before you continue to embarrass yourself and your company you take a look at other low end providers IO is like, you do not need to go far http://www.lowendtalk.com/questions/153/how-fast-can-you-io-on-your-lowendbox. (I suggest just comparing the 1.1GB files for fairness)

Here are some of the highlights:
          QuickVM – 118 MB/s
          BuyVM 128 – 180 MB/s > 36.7 MB/s
          Hostrail – 36.8 MB/s
          Virplus – 52.3 MB/s
          VPSTree – 50.1 MB/s
          Nordic – 89.2 MB/s
          FEHosting – 2.2 MB/s

          (Notice anything?)

I will not deny that I got a working unmanaged vps, what I am saying is that it was not fit for purpose. I can go out and buy a car (even a really old crappy car) but if it will not go above 2mph it is not fit for the purpose it was bought for. The same applies to my VPS with you.

So here is my final review of FEHosting’s UK VPS service.
Support is responsive, Michael generally responds to tickets quickly however the very slow IO indicates that the nodes are heavily oversold. Either that our you don’t know what you are doing.

just to let you guys know, my server is offline from last week. for first couple days fehosting didn’t even want to acknowledge this fact and kept sending me messages that “everything is ok on their side”, when it clearly wasn’t. they don’t reply to tickets sooner that with 2-3 days delay. now, 5 days later they are ‘looking into the issue’ and ‘may want to change my IPs’ to fix it. the server is completely down with the range of IPs that were previously assigned to it not replying. tracert gets lost in the datacenter
support is nonexistant as there is communication. looks to me like a typical one man operation, during a year with them I’m always being replied by the same person

Yes we sent out an email telling everyone on the UK servers are getting moved to our new hardware. We done all this and some of the IP’s could not be moved. And so what if the tickets are getting reply by me and me only If you don’t want that then your ticket can sit. I am doing my best to help everyone of you and all i get is yelled at. • Hi,

You must not be reading my tickets then. Because the ETA on a fix would only be a few minutes. Every ticket I work on i update the status about the issue that we are working on at that time. And i have no clue on who you are or what server you are talking about. if you want you can email me at michael @ fehosting dot com and add your server IP and i will help you out. I Will also fix your billing account for this error and that goes for everyone that had these issues. I don’t blame the move on anything i blame that we did not plan on getting all the IP’s moved over before data that is all. I take ALL the blame and working to my best to fix the issues that are still going on. I am not trying to block anyone out of anything and everyone who knows me should know i am doing my best. again Email me so I can help you! If you have a ticket open do also put the ticket # within the email so i can flag that ticket. Again I am very sorry you had so many issues with this move all we are doing is upgrading our hardware and upgrading the server spec’s for more power to our clients for the same price per month. We now run 16 CORE servers with 24+ GB of RAM and if yall don’t think so i will show the poof as I have never lie to any of our clients. We are doing this FOR our clients but just sometimes it blows up in my face can never get the Chance to show you We are here for the clients and not anyone else! We have done this to Only the UK Servers at this time. Next time we do it for our PA Area we will plan it a bit more for our clients and Make sure everyone knows about it. We did send emails out to each one of the UK clients but some still say they never got an email, And I am very sorry if you did not we did not plan on you not getting an email we also been posting to let clients know that we are here and know about some of the issues. I hope you do allow us to help you with this.

Fehosting, along with what seemed a very nice guy (michael) has disappeared. The problem with this is that Michael also took down the thevpsers.com domain, meaning nobody can reset their VPS’es anymore.

Michael, please send me advice on how I can regain control of the VPS. If you want help resetting Fehosting, I can help you with hosting , coding, and re-setup of the site. It would suck to tarnish fehosting’s good run with a complete blackout man. People paid for honest hosting, you seemed like a nice person, so please, if you can, just put thevpsers.com up again. If you want, I can re-add all the clients manually, you just need to get a list from your provider.

Some notes on commenting on LowEndBox:

  • Do not use LowEndBox for support issues. Go to your hosting provider and issue a ticket there. Coming here saying "my VPS is down, what do I do?!" will only have your comments removed.
