LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Free VPS Giveaway: FreeVPS.org is Growing!

This post is brought to us by LowEndTalk member @sh97.

A lot has changed since LowEndBox last posted about FreeVPS back in August of last year.

So, what exactly is FreeVPS? Let us have a refresher.

FreeVPS.org

Have you ever wanted to have your own virtual private server (VPS) but couldn’t afford it? Or maybe you just wanted to learn more about Linux and web hosting without spending a dime? If so, you might be interested in FreeVPS.org, a community-driven project that aims to provide free VPS hosting to anyone who wants one.

FreeVPS.org started as an idea by @Not_Oles, who had gotten a dedicated server from GTHost and wanted to share it with other members of the community. The project was well-received by the community and soon attracted more sponsors who donated servers and resources to expand the capacity and locations of FreeVPS.

Fast forward to today, they now have 4 server sponsors – GTHost, CrunchBits, @PieHasBeenEaten and Scaleblade across different locations – Chicago, Coeur d’Alene, Dallas and London. #ThankYou

They also have a fully functional client portal and control panel – thanks to sponsors Cloudie and VirtFusion – for providing access to Blesta and VirtFusion Control Panel replacing Proxmox.

There is now also a brand new website live at freevps.org (domain courtesy of DP). The FreeVPS admin team has expanded now with @TheOnlyDK, @FatGrizzly, and @sh97. They still have some more positions open – ping @Not_Oles on LET if you’re interested.

So, how do you get it? Almost effortless!

Head over to the LET thread and check the eligibility criteria over there. In a nutshell, you need to

  • have an active LET account older than 3 months (relaxed from 6 months originally), and
  • 50+ non-spammy posts.

It is also important to follow the usage guidelines, mentioned in the same post. Because of the abundance of resources, the system is no longer based on a lottery – if you are eligible, you get a VM.

To round it up, FreeVPS.org is not a commercial service. It is a community-driven project that relies on the generosity of sponsors and the participation of users. It is a great opportunity for anyone who wants to learn more about Linux and web hosting or just have some fun with their very own VPS. If you are interested in being a volunteer at FreeVPS.org or becoming a sponsor, contact @Not_Oles.

So, what are you waiting for? Go grab one – and have fun!
