Generation-Host - $6.25 256MB Xen VPS in Chicago

Generation Host Welcome to the new week (for those whose week starts on Monday)! I will try to make a few quick posts on some new providers, i.e. those have never been previously listed here, whom have sent me their offers over the week. First of all we have David from Generation-Host. They have recently announced their OnAPP based Xen offerings, which is the second one here on LowEndBox (after the Virpus Cloud). However, Generation-Host is trying to be honest and explicitly stated that “These are no clouds, but rather what we call ‘Budget-Enterprise VPSes'”. Hmm okay. They do have an attractive starting up price at $6.25/month, which you can order it here. It comes with

  • 256MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/OnAPP

Servers with SingleHop in Chicago IL (test IP: 69.175.11.202). Domain was registered in December 2007, making them 3.5 years old now. They are part of “CMX Networks” in Toronto Canada. Both NS on the same box with adjacent IP addresses. It seems only CentOS 5.5 and Ubuntu 10.10 are available on the ordering page, although you do get to choose from a wild range of Linux distros once you get into OnAPP. Can’t find ToS/AUP linked anywhere, and I think the live chat box blocking the page on every page load should definitely go away.

OnAPP itself is pretty nice (thanks to Generation-Host to provide me a test login), although I do not think I would have time to test it properly. They gave me a 128MB VM running Debian 5 oldstable, so I think I’ll just run some simple test instead.

# cat /proc/cpuinfo | head -n 8
processor : 0
vendor_id : GenuineIntel
cpu family : 6
model : 37
model name : Intel(R) Core(TM) i3 CPU 540 @ 3.07GHz
stepping : 5
cpu MHz : 3066.664
cache size : 4096 KB

Seems some pretty low end desktop i3 was used. You get one single core. Some IO test:

# dd if=/dev/zero of=iotest bs=64k count=4k conv=fdatasync 2>&1 | tail -n 1
268435456 bytes (268 MB) copied, 8.86224 s, 30.3 MB/s

That’s reasonable. Fetching stuff off CacheFly

# wget -O /dev/null http://cachefly.cachefly.net/100mb.test

Length: 104857600 (100M) [application/octet-stream]
Saving to: `/dev/null'

100%[========================================>] 104,857,600 11.2M/s   in 8.9s

Looks like capped at 100Mbps, on probably an empty node.

    This confuses me…

Why not just use solus + xen if its not a cloud? Doesn’t this defeat the entire purpose of onapp.

    • onapp is free for a year so they get to keep that cost in their pocket for the next while :)

Why not just pay $10/m and save money long term…

        • …long term

Apparently not in everyone’s strategy when they write up their business plan.

OnAPP itself is very nice and eventually we are planning to get a SAN up and running. It’s roughly the same price as SolusVM.

    Also, LEA:

Feel free to let me know when your done with the VPS. I won’t take it down until you’ve tested it properly. ;)

Perhaps you could give a login to someone else (trusted ofcourse) here and let them test it – I don’t think LEA has a lot of time to spare after writing these posts.
