HazeNET - $7 1024MB OpenVZ VPS

HazeNET Colin from HazeNET emailed me about their Christmas special on this WHT offer page, which is very similar to their launch offer back in July. $7/month with promo code 50OFFXMAS2010 + this ordering link and you get

  • 1GB guaranteed/2GB burstable memory
  • 40GB storage
  • 6Mbps unmetered bandwidth or 500GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

You can also use the same promo code to get 512MB memory, 20GB storage, 4Mbps unmetered package for $4/month. The order will go randomly to either Orlando FL (HostDime) or Dallas TX (Limestone). 9 months old doamin, launched in July, adjacent IP for NS and it’s still a pretty new provider. From comments of previous post there has been some down time & communication issues. I wonder how many from previous offer are still using their VPS and care to comment on their experience here.

I canceled mine a couple months ago. My connection speed dropped to 50kb/s, then crept back up to 150kb/s (this was incoming to the server. Outgoing was always fine.) Inquiring about this led to a month of the utter foolishness from their support. I think it was around 13 days before anyone responded to me with more than a ‘management will be attending to this issue with the utmost interest,’ and the issue never got resolved.

After I canceled, they tried to invoice me for the next month which prompted me to send them another ticket informing them that I’d already canceled, wouldn’t be paying them, and that by all rights I should be demanding a refund for the last month of service. I wasn’t demanding it, but support emailed me back telling me they would be refunding me for that last month…still haven’t seen it.

Colin seems like a nice guy, and I was very impressed with how he handled things originally. There was a security issue that affected a large number of people which he was nice enough to not only email his customers about, but warn them that if they had other vps’s elsewhere that they needed to attend to the issue there, as well. I was very impressed with that.

The people who are working for/with him are not impressive, and as much as I’d like to say otherwise, I wouldn’t recommend Hazenet to anyone at this point.

    • Nice opinion Derek.
That happens to me sometimes. Some people isn’t good doing support.

The offer is very good afaik.

Yeah, the whole thing was very strange, but it went on for so long that I can’t chalk it up to any sort of a one off thing, unfortunately.

I should add that the VPS itself was pretty good, other than the bandwidth issues that started my trouble. I don’t recall any downtime on it which I wasn’t warned about beforehand.

Had anyone shown the slightest interest in my bandwidth issue (thus avoiding the month’s worth of comedy which ensued,) I’d still be using it quite happily, I expect. It wasn’t the technical issue which truly bothered me, but the way it was handled (or rather, not handled.)

I got this same plan from their opening offer. Very happy with my VPS from them. Any downtime I’ve had was related to else maintenance (which they emailed me about before-hand), or a datacentre outage.

Also, any support tickets I submitted were responded to quickly and professionally.

Dunno how they’re making a profit from these offers though.

Ugh, reviews about HazeNET on WHT are pretty bad. I think I’ll stay away from this one, even though it’s a great deal.

Cancelled all my other VPSs (a 1USD server in US and some 7$ 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany) and got this instead.
Setup was instant, amazing collection of OS templates, I must admit.
There’s the usual Arch Linux, Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo etc. but they also have PBX in a Flash and Trixbox to play around with. They even have a ready-to-go Ubuntu image with a VNC server.
All you have to do is type in a few commands after installation of it and VNC is working. Uses GNOME, takes a bit under half a gig of RAM so not designed for the low-end packages.

If anyone posts any download/performance benchmarking tools or otherwise, I’ll gladly at least give a shot at running ’em.

Thanks for the honest review. I will admit that lack of communication has been an issue in the past (which is where most of the negative reviews have arisen from). Since then we have stepped up our game, and I have hired a couple more staff. Support is something I have had to cut back on in the past to achieve the rock-bottom prices we sell at, but due to very positive company growth (which not only has generated more income, but has allowed us larger discounts on our hardware, leaving more money to be spent elsewhere, ie. support), I can now afford a more efficient staff team, and in turn an all around better service.

    @nikomo

Glad you’re enjoying the service. The PBX templates where added by multiple customer request, and have definitely been a great addition. I’ve always personally enjoyed 1-click desktop environments when it comes to servers, which was why I knocked together that Gnome+VNC template.

I am working on a lighter XFCE based desktop environment, but the jumbled keyboard fix is proving to be a pain in the ass to perfect on that system. Just Google “ubuntu jumbled keyboard”, you’ll see what I mean.

We’re always open to suggestions for new features (ie. OS templates), so let us know if you want anything added.

    Looks like a nice plan.

@Colin: Do you offer Cpanel or DirectAdmin licenses also. And I cant see the add-ons like additional IPs, extra RAM etc.. for the plans. How long is the offer valid?

    December 25, 2010 @ 10:40 am | Reply
  8. @Anand

We don’t offer any cPanel or DirectAdmin licenses internally. Extra IP’s are $1.50, extra RAM is usually prices at $8/GB, but that would be pretty pointless with this offer, as you might as well upgrade the entire plan. Put in a ticket with your exact requirements, and we will work a price around that.

Now that I’ve been using the servers for a while, I can safely say, this smells quite a bit of overselling.
Either there’s a thousand users on the same machine, or there’s me + 9 and the other 9 are compiling the Linux kernel 24/7.

Network performance is anywhere between amazing and terrible at times.
Unless you have 5 hours available in your schedule, you’ll be unable to run apt-get update and apt-get upgrade on a base-install of Debian without the use of screen or nohup.

it’s been 5 days since I paid and nothing yet.
no reply from my tickets and no VPS either.

    Now the customer site says:

    “Down for Maintenance
We are currently performing maintenance and will be back shortly.”

I wonder if it is a scam.

Just had to open a Dispute on paypal to get money back since they are not responding to emails.

Sent several emails and support ticket, and no replies yet after 1 week.

  13. We had an issue with the automation system, which delayed about 30 orders for up to 48 hours. But they have all been activated now. There may have been an issue with your order, I’m not entirely sure until I know all the details. What is your ticket ID so I can look into the issue?

Looks like they may be dying – have a ticket open for awful performance – for over a week now – and no updates or responses from them what-so-ever. Friends VPS’ have been down all day and no response on that either. Can’t say I recommend anymore.

I have been using Hazenet for a few months now, started out well and good price too. That was the end of anything good.

My website has been down for almost 24 hours now, no replies from the MSN chat with Colin (I sent one yesterday, almost 24 hours later, sent another message, but none replied although his status is away then online several times). No replies from sending support tickets as well.

I even applied for several new IPs which were assigned to me, and believe it or not, they were suppose to bill me, and apparently forgot about it, because I am still waiting a reply from their ticket about that matter.

If collecting money seems to be a problem and with delays, it’s usually worse when it comes to resolving issues. I will be moving my website away from Hazenet, because it’s great when nothing happens, but when problems arise, tickets get no replies, chats get no replies, how can we run an online business if this happens frequently. The profits from sale of one item is quite a bit more than the refund Hazenet gives us for downtime.

Not worth it. Won’t recommend it.

It’s been over 4 days, and still no reply (aside from the pathetic general email sent out with the poor explanation – power fault?? for 4 days??!). My website is still down. Nothing is working. Heck, I can’t access the server to download my files and get out of hazenet even. I am just waiting for the server to be back up (if it ever does), download my files, and get the heck out of there.

    Please STAY AWAY FROM HAZENET.

It is now Jan20th and my website is still down. Still no reply from Hazenet. Absolutely not a single one. Colin is now under a rock and not showing himself on MSN (what’s the difference, even if he were online, he doesn’t reply messages). It’s absolutely ridiculous that his website is still selling his rubbish servers, but my website is still down and not a single reply. This guy is totally irresponsible and I won’t be surprise he has taken everyone’s money and left for a holiday. His constant rambling about improving his service level is utter nonsense. 10 days has gone, and not a proper reply.

I made the mistake of buying their cheap hosting. Nobody works there. It’s a scam. He gets the first month, and sometimes even more if people prepay, and pockets the money with no intention on keeping clients longer than that.

I purchased unmanaged vps service from hazenet on the 26th and set up my vps with alot of problems. I read this and realized I’m better off figuring it out myself…cheap rates anyways. At one point I was forced to reboot from control panel link they sent me in email, so I crossed my fingers and it worked! I Even Reloaded my CentOS from scratch from the control panel, my vps worked fine after that and then their website and control panel went offline?
Luckily by then my CentOS was set up and I was able to upload my java scripts that I run…Even though their website hazeNET.co.uk and the control panel was down I was able to function since then properly 24/7. I am hoping they stay in business as I want to further my subscription next month…I just know that I cant count on any response/support. But for the cheap price I pay, it basically is “you get what you pay for.”

    Just got this:
    Hi

This email is to inform you that Haznet.co.uk has been acquired by Thrust::VPS. As part of this we are currently bringing services upto our normal high operating standards. However currently there are 900+ support tickets open going back a number of months. As we understand that time is of the essance for everyone can we ask that if you have an issue that you open a NEW support ticket. We will be doing a review of all billing as well. As such can we ask that if you do have an outstanding invoice that payment is made as we have now moved transcations over to our Paypal account

Should you have any questions do please open a support ticket and someone will get back to you ASAP

Indeed it’s Rus’ tone. I see Thrust has been acquiring a number of VPS hosts within half year.
