We know HolderHost for a bit now, having featured them twice before. This time they’ve beefed up the resources a bit compared to last time but use VolumeDrive as a DC. While that isn’t necessarily bad, they aren’t known for their great quality but rather for their focus on price and resources. That doesn’t mean these offers cannot be great; they just won’t be a replacement for high-availability infrastructure. Host nodes have dual Intel Xeon X5650 CPUs, 4x 1TB HDD in hardware RAID10, 48GB of RAM, and a 1Gbps uplink. Not the worst host node in the world ;-) In any case, should you decide to pick up one of these offers be sure to let it know how it’s going!

HolderHost is a registered company in New Zealand and has been since April 2014. They’ve been doing business since 2012. It’s being run by two people and they started offering hosting out of PhoenixNAP in, well, Phoenix. PayPal is currently the only accepted payment method, though they’re working on Bitcoin as well. IPv6 is said to be available shortly, where you’ll be able to request a /128 or a /127. That is what I call a bitter disappointment and yet another bad IPv6 implementation, but I guess it’s better than no IPv6 at all. Before you order, be sure to read the Terms of Service and Acceptable Use Policy!

I must say that Holderhost is really a good choice, I have purchased 2 Servers from them over the last year, and they are really good (The servers are TOP).
The support is really quick and helpful, and they make sure that the servers run smoothly without any issues.

    • Unfortunately- options are rather limited for New Zealand based companies with regards to payment processors. There are no low fee alternatives to PayPal. We should have bitpay available on VPS orders next week.

I’ve signed up a little over 3 hours ago and have not heard anything back regarding when the server will be ready. I submitted a ticket only to get an auto-response with no helpful info. So far not looking so good, the lackluster service and help is also a minus.

    July 24, 2015 @ 9:55 pm | Reply
    • Ticket ID#? Order #? We manually provision orders to prevent fraud/ abusers as it is extremely effective. Most are provisioned within 1 hr but some will take longer. Only Plato and myself can currently accept orders. We handle the billing/ sales department ourselves. A little patience is key here. Deals like these attract abusers/ spammers. By doing manual fraud checks we are ensuring the service is better for everybody.

You would have been provisioned as pending orders were cleared.

      July 25, 2015 @ 4:30 am | Reply
      • Because of your feedback, we’re now provisioning automatically. =)

Thank you for the informative response. My server was provisioned after about 3-4 hours after I signed up. I understand doing fraud checks etc., but this status and information was never provided me (the end user), so I was just left wondering if/when the server would be provisioned. If the user could see status updates like “On step 3/10, estimated 3 hours until completed”, I think that would be fine, but it’s the lack of knowing that caused issues for me. Anyways thanks for the feedback, and also on making such a quick change on your end to address my concerns.

          • Hi atomicdog,

My apologies: 3 hrs was on the longer side of things.

That was a lack of oversight on our part not to edit the email template to include that orders were checked manually for fraud. And no worries: we’re constantly making changes and take all feedback into consideration. Hopefully our new automatic fraud prevention, coupled with manual checks, work well.

    Billing cycle: 3 month price – $5.33

Does that mean $5.33 for the whole 3 months or $16 for 3 months? And does the price go up after the 3 months? The specs are good but I need to know about the billing cycle so I don’t get raped 3 months later.

That means $16 / quarter (for the whole three months). This is a lifetime promo so you will continue to pay $16 every three months if you want to keep the service.

I’ve asked for a refund. Here is a copy of my request and reasons…

Even as I write this, the server is on 52/185 updates. I was looking for a test or stage server for some clients (VolumeDrive reputation) but this VPS is really not good for what I need.

    ================================

    Hello,

With all due respect, I would like to ask for a refund based on your 3 day guarantee.

Speed I/O is ok when running tests internally, but when doing real things like yum update it is incredibly slow.

I started updating about 20 minutes ago and it is only on 37/185 as I write this. To see if it was the repo’s fault I just updated two other servers one at a time and they both completed in under 2 minutes each (second was a fresh install too. Centos 6 and it had 291 updates)

It is now on 48/185 ( I ran the second server update during the time your server completed 11 updates…)

That’s just way too slow for even a staging or testing server.

I appreciate your attention to the IP issue and good luck but I’d really like you to credit my paypal account.

    Thanks,

    ========================================

Sam issued a PayPal refund about 3 hours ago. He felt that an issue with abuse on that node may have contributed to the less than stellar performance numbers I posted above.

As far as the business practices of HolderHost, I have only good things to say. Issues were handled in a timely manner, refund was issued in good faith upon fair expectations not being met in this instance.

      I wish Sam good luck!

      September 8, 2015 @ 2:31 am | Reply
    • Hi Ruby. We absolutely will honour our money back guarantee and unlike other businesses, we don’t have a set day that these are issued (we refund valid requests as soon as I see them). =)

With regard to I/O performance, I did a bit of digging because of the poor I/O result you got. A RAID Resync was the culprit.

      ————————————————-
      /dev/md2:
      Timing cached reads: 16602 MB in 2.00 seconds = 8314.27 MB/sec
      Timing buffered disk reads: 612 MB in 3.04 seconds = 201.61 MB/sec
      ————————————————-

dd commands are not accurate all the time, hdparm is the best way to check.

      Thanks! =)

  32. Well, I purchased the quarter plan 1. It’s not even a month and I received this email from them. Which means instead of 3 months I will only get about 2 months and after that I will have to pay roughly a dollar less amount per month for what I was getting the server for a quarter year. And, even the specs of the server would be downgraded. What can I say….. I just feel like laughing at myself…

Why if the hosting company is sold to another does the subscription still send to someone providing no service to me. It’s my job to manually cancel the subscription because of this? This is stupid. This guy is just collecting from subscriptions after he sells his hosting company and providing no service. I am I missing something here? How do I get my money back
