HostFolks - $5.95 512MB OpenVZ VPS in Multiple Locations

Via this WHT offer. HostFolks is currently offering double memory promotion before the end of September on all their VPS plans. It’s now starting from $5.95/month for their “Economy” package (order link), which has

  • 512MB memory
  • 25GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/HyperVM

Now the servers are available in either Scranton (HostNOC), Houston (ThePlanet) or Germany (Hetzner), which you get to choose in the order form. HostFolks have been around since 2001 and it’s domain is registered in UK (although I can’t seem to find it in companies house when I searched “host folks”).

  1. I saw the site and the ram is 256MB and not 512MB for the 5.95 plan.

    • Yes — but they are also running a double-RAM promotion at the moment so you do get 512MB afterwards.

I grabbed a Houston-based VPS just before the Sep 2010 promo ended on a Houston VPS and it’s working great so far.

At first, system time was 3 min slow but they fixed that in a day, and support openvpn.

    • Gotta admit that I’m not a fan of threaded comments. On another thread, the newer comments are up at the top of the page and mixed in with the older comments. Kind of hard to find the newer ones.

Not against LEB of course. I just dislike threaded comments in general on any platform.

      • Yes you right, with threaded comments, one have to scroll up and down to find the latest comment :)

      • It’s more about keeping the conversation in threads rather than jumping all over the place to string the dialogues together.

Maybe it would be good to highlight the new comments since last time you have commented — keeping a last-read timestamp per blog post in cookie for example.

I want to say when I first signed up for their services about a year ago (around 9-2010 I believe) the services were great, support WAS great and I had a pretty decent experience with the vps. With-in the past 2 months (especially after this advertisement on LEB) the server has been slowly degrading and there have been at _least_ 7 instances of downtime lasting from an hour, to 12 hours or more. Also, they refuse to save things such as the activation of /dev/tun in the container configuration, so EVERY SINGLE TIME the server was rebooted I had to submit a ticket to have it re-enabled. You would think that bad enough, but support which used to respond with-in the hour, now takes an average of a day to respond (IF they respond at all, many tickets now go without even being answered). Any time I inquire about the degradation of services or ask about any type of service problem other than /dev/tun the ticket is just ignored, and they do not seem to care at all about how it is hurting their customers.

So, long story short, after a year+ of decent service I am now ending my services with Hostfolks at the end of this term. I WOULD NOT suggest people patronize theses guys because if you end up with any issues, its likely you will be stuck waiting for a while for it to be fixed (if your ticket is even addressed). This after being a long time supporter and suggesting them to people who would ask, who I have also informed of my recent dis-satisfaction. Talk about disappointing.

They are probably headed for the dead pool if they keep this crap up, I only hope they prove me wrong and fix their issues. Regardless, for me it is over.
