Hostirian - $3.96 256MB Xen VPS in St. Louis

Hostirian Via this WHT offer. Halloween — today? Well I live in a country that don’t usually celebrate it so I’m only aware of the event when all those Halloween-related sales started propping up. Hostirian is doing one such sale, and it’s giving a better discount than their previous offer. 20% off recurring discount when you use coupon code vps20, and you don’t even have to Like them on their Facebook page (which also gives you 20% off apparently). “VPS Starter Package” is $3.96/month after the discount. Direct sign up link.

  • 256MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 100GB/month data transfer
  • 1x vCPU core
  • Citrix XenServer

Servers located in St. Louis MO (test IP: 216.87.32.157). It appears that they might not have a control panel to let you re-image your server. ToS/AUP here with no apparent restriction on IRC, VPN or proxy. They were in the business since 1995 (as “Primary Network”) and have live support with a phone number.

100GB/month data would be a severe restriction to some people here. Personally I am fine with that as most sites of mine have little images.

*crap* wrong gravatar above (LEA just delete it please)

It would be insterresting to have available vps in Iran for $3.96/month. Warez freaks/DMCA offenders would find a hosting Mecca here. But no nudity of course! So also perfect hosting for doc mike :P

Oh, and americans would have hard time to order service from banned country. And all rest with paypal too :)

Every time. In fact, I’m still not positive it’s not a Iranian host. ;)

Hostirian, at least for dedicated servers, requires you fax or e-mail them a form with your credit card number on it.

They also put failing drives in dedicated servers (thousands of reallocated sectors). Then, they replace them with used drives that have had the partition table wiped, but not the entire disk, so user data is still visible on the disk (or you can just restore the partition table). They also brain-farted “RAID1 the two drives in the server” to mean “Create an LVM across both physical volumes for the root filesystem” – resulting in JBOD behavior. After three rounds with their support, I just remotely, in-place debootstrapped debian into the swap partition and used that to setup something resembling a sane system – which is when I discovered the prior user’s data on the disks still.

Strangely enough, I canceled their service, got a phone call a week later from someone wanting to ‘discuss the server I had’, and then the next day two charges to that card come in from CCBill.

I guess what I’m saying here is I wouldn’t use their VPS if I were paying for it with THEIR credit card.

    • While I do question the above review since no proof is offered, I do recall that these folks are the “$100 for an OS reinstall” folks from a few months ago. Those wondering about this provider may want to review the previous comments about them from their last offer:

        Understandable skepticism.

        I ordered one of their ‘legacy’ servers, from http://www.hostirian.com/legacy-dedicated-server-sale-when-theyre-gone-theyre-really-gone/ – Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz | 4 | 2048 | DDR2 | SATA | 244198 | 2 is the specific line item.

Steve at Hostirian couldn’t tell me what era or generation the Xeons were from:
        >Sorry, don’t know the model number – only what I see listed in inventory and I posted that. The servers are not physically at my location.

The state of the drives as I logged into the server:

        For /dev/sda:
        1 Raw_Read_Error_Rate 0x002f 200 200 051 Pre-fail Always – 2
        5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 195 195 140 Pre-fail Always – 40
        188 Unknown_Attribute 0x0032 100 098 000 Old_age Always – 2 (command timeouts)
        197 Current_Pending_Sector 0x0032 200 200 000 Old_age Always – 1

        /dev/sdb:
        5 Reallocated_Sector_Ct 0x0033 197 197 140 Pre-fail Always – 18
        196 Reallocated_Event_Count 0x0032 198 198 000 Old_age Always – 2

The sector count for sda got progressively worse until they replaced the drives. I believe I reported updates in their ticket system rather than e-mails, which I don’t have access to currently.

Chris was the person that arranged for the drive replacement. I left their last name out, but have it if you wish to confirm.

My complaint that they botched the disk install:

Looks like instead of being RAID1’d in either hardware or software, these drives were striped across both drives with LVM, including the root filesystem and swap.

If we can’t RAID1 it for some reason as a support issue, I’d ask that the LVM root system be resized to occupy just one disk and I’ll undo it all and configure it for non-LVM’d RAID1 myself. I can’t do a thing to resize or manipulate the filesystem, partitioning or layout as it is configured now and is the exact opposite of RAID1.

        Response:

        Jacob,

It wasn’t supposed to be set up that way I will reload it correctly now.

        Thank you,

        Chris Streicher

        My login info:

        Server name = s25.710lc.hostirian.com
        IP address = 206.225.11.25
        SSH User Info:
        Username=jacobpapenfuss
        Password=89011

That’s right – my password is my ZIP code.

        They also have this policy:

        > Upon logging into your server for the first time please change the root password immediately. A Hostirian house account is on your server the username is hostiriandr1 please do not change any permissions for this user account. Hostirian will maintain a password for this account to assist in supporting your server, if this account is removed or altered Hostirian will not be able to provide any support or backups services on your server other than basic reboots.

I don’t have logs of my other issues, including network dropouts on a regular basis that would leave me without a route from Las Vegas, but I did have connectivity from other locations.

The order form sent to me can be found at http://www.celestialnavigators.org/hostirian_dedicated.pdf – Not completed, of course.
