HostLatch - $18.75/3 Months 1GB OpenVZ VPS

Updated March 2010: HostLatch has been purchased by GigeVPS and is now redirecting there.

HostLatch Via this offer on WHT. HostLatch has turned 1 last month, and have been promoting their anniversary special ever since. You can either use coupon code celebrate25 to get 25% off recurring, or celebrate65 65% once off. Normally I don’t take once off discount into consideration although in HostLatch’s case, it can actually be very cost effective to prepay 12 month and get once off discount — I got my HostLatch VPS this way last year. 25% off recurring can also be pretty good if you don’t want to be locked in for 12 months. Take their Anniversary Special #2 — $18.75/3 Months after discount, and you get

  • 1GB guaranteed/1.5GB burstable memory
  • 80GB storage
  • 350GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Now, this is embarrassing to feature such a “high end” VPS on LowEndBox.com, and I have never had a server with 1GB of memory or more. Servers are in Orlando or Dallas. I had my HostLatch VPS for 4-5 months now. Initially in Atlanta GA and now moved to Orlando FL. Up time is okay (except once bitten by a SolusVM bug).

I tried last month to get a server in TX (like their website claims), and they told me there are no services available there. Only FL and GA are available. Might have changed since then, but it’s unlikely.

So what’s your experience? Apparently they are rather unreliable and their offers suggest that the servers are pretty crammed.

I used them in the past. The service was slow and unreliable.

  6. Oversold — likely. The whole point of overselling is that most of your customers won’t use all the resources allocated in the package. I have to admit that I am so used to low end setups, even on VPS with more than 256MB of memory, I don’t really use all the memory, nor disk space.

I currently have a VPS with HostLatch and while they are ok I wouldn’t recommend them for anything critical. My VPS simply shut down (with no log indication whatsoever) and hat to be rebooted via the control panel, and at one time it had an ultra-high load and disk access didn’t work at all (you could connect via SSH and load bash but as soon as program had to be loaded it became stuck). Their I/O is always a bit sluggish and for most commands you have to wait a second until they are loaded from disk. The offered disk space/traffic/ram is nice though for the price.

I have a similar experience as David T. My server would simply be shutdown for no reason. They also gave me a dirty IP address initially. Mail kept bouncing or was treated as spam. One of the bouncing servers logged an error referring me to mail-abuse.org/cgi-bin/lookup?my.IP.address and sure enough it was blacklisted. They gave me a new IP, however I have since discovered the VPS shutdown at least once a week for no reason, as well as speed fluctuations. I’m moving on.

I found out they reject romanian and possibly other east-europe customers which are probably the target for low end services anyway.

I recomend kerplunc hosting for their fiber firefly.

The server admin said “We do not overload our servers”.
But it is not mean they don’t oversold thier servers.

  13. Daniel, we do accept any clientele around the world, we just have Maxmind configured to block off fraud, so if it has blocked your order, simply contact us and we will manually review and approve your order. It also shows interest from the client when they contact us.

  14. argamak, it’s just that some clients expect a $5 VPS to run like a $300 dedicated server. If you’re looking for that… your expectations are surely very high.

Wiz, please open up a support ticket, we will be happy to assist you.

  15. I got my VPS. I certainly didnt expect a reply for the ticket I posted as many hosts reject romanians (perhaps with a good reason i reckon) but if i was up for fraud I wouldn’t have chosen the 6 bucks offer tho.
I intend to run it as a Tor exit node with very restrictive policy (they are in USA…) and we will see if they accept it.
Lately I buy my servers exclusively from LowEndBox offers and have never been disappointed ! Kerplunc rocks so far, I will post reviews about my specifics (no mission critical, low memory, low space, low CPU, high bandwidth controversial usage for some too easily scared hosts) so other Tor operators may make an educated choice.
Keep up the good job, Admin !

I’m doing nothing extremely critical with mine (Teamspeak 3 Server mostly). In the last month, I’ve only had one crazy issue where the VPS reported being online in Solus, but was 0mb used/0mb total ram. Nothing worked, couldn’t connect via SSH. It took just shy of 10 minutes after a support ticket to be fully up and running.

As for the service? Well… I have a bias opinion. After being with Virpus, I’ve been hardened to poor service – so I think HostLatch is perfectly fine. My slow SSH connection is perfectly explainable being 3,000 miles away. I’d prefer a closer location, but hell… $25 for a year with 60GB disk & 300GB bandwidth? Why not.

I’m losing faith. Today I logged in to find my server was mysteriously shutdown. Nothing logged or noted. Just off.

  18. Robert,
We answered your tickets within minutes prior you opening the ticket. I’d highly suggest you wait at least 5-10 minutes for a response before posting.

Your issue was caused due to a 3rd party script, or software issue on your end. It was not an issue caused by us. And in case you didn’t know, the plan you purchased is *unmanaged*.

If you find your VPS down, you can check /var/log/messages to see what happened.

    Regards,
    Adam

  19. Hostlatch sold annual plans during June 2010 and intimated shut down of business on 02 July. Prorata refunds were offered to customers but refused on frivolous grounds. No claim acceptable after 06 July. Duped $44, I
have filed report with San Jose police. The report may be viewed at ukmall.net/undigested/hostlatch
