LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Hostodo - $12/year 512MB VPS in Los Angeles or Miami

hostodo com 2015-03-10 06-15-20Hassan, from Hostodo, has sent in some offers to LowEndBox. While two of them were identical to last time, the one below drew my attention and I considered it quite interesting.

The offer

This is by all means a very cheap and competitive offer. Whether it’s sustainable, though, I don’t know yet. Then again, at just 12 bucks a year it could be considered worth the risk. And if it turns out to work well, it’s an amazing deal. Hostodo is a registered company in Detroit, Michigan (as ODO Services LLC) and recently expanded to Miami. In Miami they offer a “huge discount on IPv4 addresses”, so that may be interesting to those still serving people with ancient OS or Palm Pilots. For all up-to-date people there’s a /112 IPv6 subnet included. Combined with SNI, you could serve the world with this machine. Reviews on the last post were fairly positive, though some remarks were made about Hassan’s former adventure ‘ReverseHosts’ and a somewhat improper ending of that one. It seems as though he has turned things around. Regardless, we’re still looking to hear from those that try out this offer!

Payments can be made using PayPal, Credit Card, and Bitcoin (all through Stripe). No SPAM and no torrenting are the ground rules. For more details on what will get your ass whooped and server terminated, please read their Terms of Service!

  2. Ordered me another VPS from them (didn’t know they were in Miami). Can’t comment on uptime since I don’t monitor it or login much but performance is good and support is a bit better than some of the other VPSs I have.

I signed up this morning. The process was fast and painless. The VPS was available immediately. Then I went to the panel and installed Ubuntu 14.04 minimal (great choices of OSes BTW). That too was fast, and I was in my VPS in less than a minute. But a simple “apt-get update” didn’t work and stayed stuck on an ipv6 address. I haven’t looked into it yet but I suspect there is a problem with the routing. I’ll contact support and see how well that works. I’ll report here my experience.

Update: I created a support ticket and the problem was fixed and explained to me within an hour, which was a nice touch. The ipv6 problem is solved, my VPS is fully functional. I am happy with the service, honestly I didn’t expect the issue to be solved within even 24h for $12/year, yet it was in 1h. I’m happy. I have found a replacement for chicagovps that’s been horrendous the past few weeks.

By default, their Ubuntu install doesn’t have Nano and is set to IPv6. IPv6 doesn’t mix well with the apt servers (they dont have many IPv6 servers configured from what I read).

      You’ll need to use
      > sudo vim /etc/gai.conf

      Browse down to
      #
      # For sites which prefer IPv4 connections change the last line to
      #
      precedence ::ffff:0:0/96 100
And press delete to remove the # before precedence.

Then you’ll need to use the vim command :x to save and exit.

I’m working my way through getting MEAN installed.

Opened a ticket 14 hours ago, still no response. Previous ticket was responded in the hour.

Except that, it’s a good deal, I/O speed is good 1.6 GB/s. They should focus more on helping people than responding on this blog to thank how wonderful your review is.

Quite happy so far. Flashed it with Ubuntu 64, and got Meteor up and running today in LA. I was planning to use it as a MEAN server but was intrigued to try Meteor.

I’ve reflashed the OS a dozen times with different distros, no issues. But their only one-click install is for a couple cpanel options (they only work in CentOS). The distros seem very barebones sans the fact they seemed to all (except CentOS) come with apache2 installed.

A few tips for other folks setting up a stack on these servers:
    – Modify the apt-get to allow IPv4
    – Update and install Nano (if you want it) / PHP5 / Web / a cpanel of you need
    – Remove Apache2 – interferes with the Meteor built in web server
    – Create a backup using their cpanel
