Luna Node – OpenStack KVM from 4.50/month for SSD and more in Toronto and Montreal

lunanode com 2015-05-06 06-16-39

Favyen, from Luna Node, is back with their OpenStack offers in Toronto and Motreal Canada locations. Their last feature post was well received, with the only complaint as not supporting IPv6. Now they are happy to announce that IPv6 is supported and that they are also launching pure SSD instances.

For those unfamiliar, Luna Node is utilizing an OpenStack-based setup in Canada. They offer real cloud at very excellent prices. They support actual hourly billing similar to iwStack and EC2. Other supported features include: custom OS and templates, live snapshotting, API to provision servers, floating IP addresses, detachable volumes, private networking, security groups, DNS hosting, uptime monitoring, and free hosted e-mail.

Since the offer is cloud, below are just example configuration that fits LEB criteria:

Luna Node usually have a $12.00 initial deposit requirement for new accounts. Later credit deposits can be anywhere between $5 and $300. For this offer, they are discounting the initial deposit to just $9, but you will actually get $12 credit. This means you are getting $3 free credits. This is only allowed once per customer, and only for new customers.

For their host node setup, their non-SSD service in Toronto uses dual Xeon L5639, while SSD nodes uses dual Xeon E5-2670. Their Montreal location has Xeon E5-2650 v2.

Luna Node is a brand of LunaNode Hosting Inc. – a registered company based in British Columbia, Canada with registration number 812782639BC0001. They have been around for more than two years now and have been featured here several times already. Reviews are generally positive and we wish our readers will share their thoughts at the comments section below.

For all plans, customers can opt to use their distributed Ceph storage cluster instead of local storage for the same price. SSD plans are only available in Toronto at this time. Toronto instances have IPv6 support, with a single IPv6 address on the default network. Vvirtual networks created in Toronto will get a /64 IPv6 allocation. Virtual machines provisioned on that network can assign arbitrary IPv6 addresses in the range.

Payments can be made via Paypal, Bitcoin, and Credit Card (via Stripe). Interac e-transfers are accepted for Canadian customers for amounts of at least $25 CAD. Bandwidth is accounted on a per-calendar-month per-region basis, and excess bandwidth usage is billed at $0.003/GB (notifications will be sent prior to exceeding bandwidth, and customers can opt to automatically have virtual machines be suspended if desired). As always, kindly read their Terms of Service and Privacy Policy before making any purchase.

  1. “Since the offer is cloud”, I think you meant “Since the offer is À la carte”

I’ve been with them for a little while now and I can’t say that I have any complaints. Uptime is great. Network is great. Control panel is REALLY good and always snappy.

Plus it’s an affordable, quality commercial host in eastern Canada and that’s pretty rare.

Haven’t opened tickets but downtime always comes with email warnings so communication is okay at the very least and probably stellar. Definitely recommend those guys.

The virtual machines are billed hourly, not monthly; a deposit is needed as the services are prepaid and it would be unreasonable to generate a new invoice every hour.

All of our services are prepaid, so you need to top up your account by adding credit. We currently don’t publicly offer post-paid billing (where you would be charged at the end of the month for usage during that month) like AWS and others due to the much higher potential for abuse (which is more likely with a budget provider).

    Well, really buggy one
Was not able to even install Debian 8.2 from ISO
Handled in the middle of installation.
Tried reboot and shutdown but nothing happens.
So I was forced to remove it.

Sorry to hear that you ran into some issues with ISO installation. If you open a support ticket, we’ll be happy to assist. Generally the procedure is to provision the VM with ISO selected under Image, launch noVNC viewer by hitting VNC button, complete the installation, and then select swap boot order to boot from disk. If noVNC doesn’t work for you then you can switch to VNC tunnel from the Account tab, which would allow you to connect via your own desktop VNC client.

I did attempt to install from the Debian 8.2 64-bit ISO and was not able to replicate any bugs (tested on SSD 512 instance in Toronto and selected disabled root account, unmodified guided partitioning, and just SSH package).

I was unable to replicate this too on other nodes.
But still, was a little bit confused, as never seen such behavior before

    Is this special still available?

Do you have 32-bit ISO images? Preferably Debian 8.

What does the LL suffix mean, like on 1024LL?

    Thanks!

Yup it should be, I just used it last week and absolutely LOVING Lunanode. On your question of ISOs…you can actually upload your own ISOs (I uploaded the latest Debian 8.2 minimal/net iso and got a nice small/clean install off that, Lunanode’s panel makes it so easy/fast to upload ISOs) but they do have a Debian 8 32-bit ISO and template available.

Looks like Nick answered your question about ISO images (thanks!).

The LL doesn’t stand for anything in particular, but it indicates that the plan is for RAM-intensive programs. So the LL plans have more RAM than corresponding normal plans, but with possibly lower CPU allocation, bandwidth allocation, and storage allocation. Attributes other than the allocation are the same, e.g. LL plans are provisioned on the same hardware and infrastructure as the other plans.

The coupon is indeed still available, just register from the link in the offer:

I have been a customer of Luna Node for about 10 months and I am extremely happy with the service. Though they are not at Digital Oceans level of reliability, they do make up for that with their support and being canadian company.

Earlier this summer I was intrigued by Luna Node, decided to make the minimum deposit to test them out and was thoroughly impressed:
    – open and up front communications
    – advance notice for any scheduled downtime (which are short, typically done at night and have been minimal)
    – simple yet powerful control panel interface
    – low pricing plans including the lowest regular prices I’ve seen for basic SSL certificates (i.e. my guess is that they view themselves as a hosting provider, so there’s no reason to gouge customers for a basic SSL certificate)
    – they pay attention to the details e.g. A+ Qualys SSL Labs rating for the configuration of their secure site. This is not hard to do but you’d be amazed at how many hosting providers (and domain registrars who actually sell SSL certificates) with poorly configured secure websites

I’ll be recommending Luna Node to small business clients who require me to manage their website. I like supporting a fellow Canadian business and the idea of hosting local business websites (whose target market is the Greater Toronto Area) with a server that’s located in Toronto. i.e. one of the fastest server ping times from Toronto

I’m a DIYer and love being able to upload my own ISO images via the control panel interface (vs. having to open up a support ticket and hoping/waiting for it to be fulfilled). For example, I wanted to test out CoreOS but wanted to custom install it via CentOS x86_64 6.5 Live CD

I took the time to fill out their survey and to my surprise, I think they’ve implemented all of my suggestions. At the time, my reluctance to switch my other VPS plan over (which finishes in a few months) was due to the lack of IPv6 and SSD support but now Luna Node has both…so no more hesitation.
