LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

MeteorVPS - $6.99 1GB OpenVZ VPS in UK

MeteorVPS Chris from MeteorVPS wrote to me 2 days ago offering LowEndBox readers some specials on his UK-based VPS. The plan, literally LowEndBoxSpecial, is $6.99/month and here is the link to order. You get

  • 1024MB guaranteed/1536MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 1TB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

They are taking PayPal only. Servers with Redstation in Hampshire UK. IRC is explicitly forbidden in their ToS. Their domain has only been registered since July, with WHOIS privacy protection and their whole website is hosted with HostGator (who uses non-redundant NS setup). “Meteor” but with a single-eyed green man theme. They seem to be doing mostly Minecraft hosting, as when you google “meteorvps”, most results are Minecraft related. Chris is based in North England, and is ~16-17 years old from the age he filled out on some online forums.

People get hives when they see that here.

    • Which is why I am mentioning it. Personally I don’t prefer VPS hosting business that’s game server focused…

      • Thanks for putting us up here LEA,

I did mis-send that e-mail, it should of said Unlimited B/W, we have enough to cope with any strain of VPS traffic, however the port will remain to be 100Mbits.

I mis-read my providers TOS, here is the things we CANNOT allow on our servers, but anything else should be fine, including IRC.

Illegal Material – This includes copyrighted works, commercial audio, video, or music files, and any material in violation of any Federal, State or Local regulation.
Adult Material – Includes all pornography, erotic images, or otherwise lewd or obscene content. The designation of “adult material” is left entirely to the discretion of Redstation.
Warez – Includes pirated software, ROMS, emulators, phreaking, hacking, password cracking. IP spoofing, etc., and encrypting of any of the above. Also includes any sites which provide “links to” or “how to” information about such material.
Gaming websites – Includes pirated software, software downloads etc., and encrypting of any of the above.

This one and HVHost are using exactly the same ‘server’ images on their homepage.

And LEA chose to place them right next to each other.

    • Haha, the site was just re-designed so this clearly caused the designer to go look at some iconshack site and take a few, weird how we’re next to HVhost and they’re using the same image, good eye!

I wouldn’t even associate a word business with with people who aren’t even adults.

When this guy will be taking his exams and doing school work, you’ll be sitting with your server offline once any node problems occur. Better just pass such offers.

I wouldn’t got that far. I do think that some teenagers have great technical knowledge and a sense for business. What worries me is that if they are underaged they have no responsibillity.

Also in Britan it’s really common to leave school at 16 and start working.

They discussed raising the age to 18 for England, with a view to bringing in the legislation in 2015.

Hardly the same as the age having been raised to 18 like you claim.

        • Daniel @ LowEndTalk,

I don’t think that’s a matter to discuss openly. However there are many legit sources of torrents, such as the “new” mininova.

          Link: http://www.mininova.org/
They had to change their ways of warez to freez. (hehe). On that site any “illegal” content is swiftly removed. I also respect the way they are still alive and people are seeding & leeching submitted content. it’s all about open-sourcability.

Another reason for a torrent in legit reason is to distribute A game patch or something similar. For example, WoW requires ~30GB of download, so would that be quicker with one of these VPS’s or with 20 peers on a 50KB/S upload?

  8. Sorry. Just thought I would include this here ;

TL;DR – Way too much criticism on youths in business.

Abraham Lincoln, lawyer, U.S. president. Finished one year of formal schooling, self-taught himself trigonometry, and read Blackstone on his own to become a lawyer.

Amadeo Peter Giannini, multimillionaire founder of Bank of America. Dropped out of high school.

Andrew Carnegie, industrialist and philanthropist, and one of the first mega-billionaires in the US. Elementary school dropout.

Andrew Jackson, U.S. president, general, attorney, judge, congressman. Home-schooled. Became a practicing attorney by the age of 35 – without a formal education.

Andrew Perlman, co-founder of GreatPoint. Dropped out of Washington University to start Cignal Global Communications, an Internet communications company, when he was only 19.

Anne Beiler, multimillionaire co-founder of Auntie Anne’s Pretzels. Dropped out of high school.

Ansel Adams, world-famous photographer. Dropped out of high school.

Ashley Qualls, founder of Whateverlife.com, left high school at the age of 15 to devote herself to building her website business. She was more than a million dollars by 17.

Barbara Lynch, chef, owner of a group of restaurants, worth over $10 million, in Boston. Dropped out of high school.

Barry Diller, billionaire, Hollywood mogul, Internet maven, founder of Fox Broadcasting Company, chairman of IAC/InterActive Corp (owner of Ask.com),

Ben Kaufman, 21-year-old serial entrepreneur, founder of Kluster. Dropped out of college in his freshman year.

Benjamin Franklin, inventor, scientist, author, entrepreneur. Primarily home-schooled.

Billy Joe (Red) McCombs, billionaire, founder of Clear Channel media, real estate investor. Dropped out of law school to sell cars in 1950.

Bob Proctor, motivational speaker, bestselling author, and co-founder of Life Success Publishing. Attended two months of high school.

Bram Cohen, BitTorrent developer. Attended State University of New York at Buffalo for a year.

Carl Lindner, billionaire investor, founder of United Dairy Farmers. Dropped out of high school at the age of 14.

Charles Culpeper, owner and CEO of Coca Cola. Dropped out of high school.

    The list goes on..

The fact remains that it’s illegal to enter into a binding contract with a 17 year old. Listing people who were able to make their businesses succeed is all fine and well, but if something particularly bad happens here, there’d be limited legal recourse due to the owner’s age, I’d imagine.

How many of those dropouts were actually successful at 17, anyway? All you’ve given is a list of people who weren’t successful when they were young, and then went on to be. Given how many people there are in the world, and how many there have been in total, it’s not a surprise you can conjure up a list of a couple of dozen who did alright for themselves, eventually.

I don’t think anyone was criticizing the owner in particular by pointing out his age, just letting people be aware of the facts. Owner is under 18, so it’s a legally tricky position to do business with him.

      November 27, 2011 @ 11:59 pm | Reply
    • Sigh. Every time age is brought up to my post is because of legal binding. If it is not a legal entity then who are we doing business with here?

And what’s the point of bringing out a list of successful high school drop-outs? Shall I also list out all the unsuccessful ones as well for comparison? WordPress might chock from loading that lengthy list though…

He said he believed Thrust did not host in the UK. Considering they’re owned by a UK company – in fact the same company that owns the Datacentre, Rapidswitch – it shows quite a lack of knowledge of the hosting business and their competitors, imo, if they genuinely didn’t know about it.

And if every comment is depressing, it’s only because the hosting business is full of halfwits who shouldn’t be in the business. That is depressing, I agree.

Yes, you could have a legal contract with a company (which is a legal entity in its own right), even if its (sole) director were under 18. Otherwise, the 2006 change in the law to allow under-18 directors would have been a little pointless.

However, it seems that MeteorVPS is *not* an incorporated legal entity; rather, it seems to be the trading name of a self-employed minor and “Sole Propertier” [sic] in which there is no distinction between the company and
the proprietor (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sole_proprietorship). So the contract would not be with a separate “MeteorVPS” entity but rather would be with Chris personally, and thus null and void.
