miniVPS - £10/Year 128MB OpenVZ VPS in France

miniVPS Getting a lot more France offers lately? Just spotted this WHT offer from miniVPS. Actually Simon @ miniVPS emailed me 2 days ago getting one of the plan featured but I think this £10/year (~USD$16.07) might interest the readers here more. Sign up link here, and here we go:

  • 128MB guaranteed/256MB burstable memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Payment in PayPal or Moneybookers. Servers in France with OVH (test IP: 46.105.114.184). There are other low end offers:

  • VPS 2 £2.15/month — 256MB/512MB memory, 30GB storage and 1000GB/month data
  • VPS 3 £3.50/month — 512MB/1024MB memory, 50GB storage and 2000GB/month data

It’s part of Xavvo Ltd which is registered in Scotland in June 2011 (company no. SC402161), which claims to be in business since 1999 (from about us page). Here is the AUP for those with sharp eyes. Very new company though — but I guess at the end of pricing spectrum you’ll only loose 10 pound if they disappear next month.

  1. @LEA – What ever happened to the policy of not listing yearly deals for companies with < 1 year of life?

    • Ha! Not when they got into this price range. Otherwise there are also two other packages that people can try without committing to a full year.

There shouldn’t be exceptions IMHO, lower the price greater the risk.

Kudos for the sane approach to IRC in the AUP.

“We are happy to accept users wanting to run IRC based services on our systems unless they are used for malicious activity. We do ask that you keep a quiet policy while operating your services or community as we will terminate any account that receives abuse notifications or repeated DDos attacks.”

So you seem to only get half of one CPU core, kinda not nice this isn’t mentioned anywhere prior to purchase.

      September 6, 2011 @ 2:53 pm | Reply
      • George:

Yeah I do wish that they mentioned that somewhere, but it’s actually quite speedy still. They do have a money-back option so there’s always that.

      • Tom:

Its actually not mentioned anywhere that you get a full core of a CPU. It just says “Lite VPS”. A Bud light is also not the normal Bud but less. So why bother?

        September 6, 2011 @ 5:45 pm | Reply
        • rm:

It’s “by default” that you get (at least) one core. Even in the LEB world. Anything less should be marked as such.

        • Tom:

@rm: I never heard of that binding rule. We actually have quite a few offers that even limit the MHz to ~300-400.

        • Agree with Tom. Ask to Burst.net and their resellers…

Also, Serverdragon gives you a half core too.

          @Tom
Who said anything about binding rules?
It’s just called common sense. If it’s not specified, most people will expect 1 full core, or more. If you are giving less than 1 core, it’s a good practice to state clearly how much.
You don’t sell a VPS e.g. with network capped at 5 megabit without mentioning that in advance, right? Because you know that if network speed is not mentioned, people will probably think it’s just a regular 100 Mbps port. Because that’s what they have from most other providers.

          http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/burstnet-5-95-512mb-openvz-vps-in-miami-with-first-month-free/
I click through to this offer and the first thing I see:
          Description >>>CPU: 1GHZ<<<, RAM: 512MB, DISKSPACE: 20GB, BANDWIDTH: 1000GB/MONTH

        • George:

          Serverdragon also states “1/2” core.

As far is this particular VPS goes, it’s actually pretty snappy even from NYC. Let’s see how long it stays this way.

          September 7, 2011 @ 4:31 am | Reply
        • @rm That’s the idea, you get a fraction of CPU time, and not an equal share or fair share CPU with burst.net

        • rm:

          @Yomero @George
          so what’s your point?
I don’t say it’s a bad thing to give 1/2 core or whatever. It’s just something that should be mentioned clearly on the plan page, WHMCS checkout, etc.

@rm: So anything that is not provided when contracting should be mentioned within a contract? Thats a refreshing idea how a contract should look like. Kind of new to me, but maybe it depends on the continent.

So since 1GBit ports are standard now, should it be mentioned that they don’t have 100MBit? Or should they mention, that they have a 1Gbit port? Should they mention that they don’t have raid if the don’t. What about backups? Not much providers provide that, still they don’t mention it. What about tun/tap. If its not provided it should be mentioned?

I guess it is better the other way ’round (like in common law it used to be). Everything you want to have binding must be stated. Expectations don’t count useless they were expressed and noticable for the contracting party. That’s how it works.

Plus, referring to the topic, the provider explicitly states “equal share CPU”. That doesn’t say 1 core. Equal share. 4 cores and 8 customers makes 0.5 cores but is equal share. So you get what is stated and you contracted for.

        • I can speak on behalf of miniVPS, all our plans come with full core access, so VPS1 comes with 1 full core access, VPS2 comes with 2 full core access, VPS3 comes with 3…

In regards to ports, all VPS’s have a connection rate of 100mbit.

7 minute reply to my ticket. Adjusted CPU and asked first to check/reboot (didn’t automatically go ahead and reboot on his own, this annoys me a lot sometimes).

        • Agree totally with Tom, I think in the same way, nobody is saying that is bad to get a fraction of a core, but is the same with all the specs of the hardware, never is totally specified in the contract.

    • However, my Dedicated Server at OVH is beginning to lack. I’ve noticed a degrade in the Network since its being gobbled up now.

Gah – not fair. This could explain some of the ping issues, i’ve been getting tiny timeouts here too, and just subtle 3-5 seconds from time to time.
