PhotonVPS - $5.95 128MB Xen VPS

PhotonVPS 4 days ago Jimmy from PhotonVPS emailed me about their latest Xen VPS packages with a reference to this offer on WHT, but the email was somehow buried inside my totally chaotic inbox. Oops. Anyway. They now have Xen packages “Warp .25” for just $5.95/month.

  • 128MB memory/256MB swap
  • 2GB storage
  • 150GB/month data transfer
  • Xen

PhotonVPS has their servers in Los Angeles CA according to their network page. PhotonVPS was launched by Profuse Solutions last year, but the company itself that has been around since 1999. Somehow, probably due to their West Coast service, PhotonVPS seems to be very popular in Far East/South East Asia. The fact that they have full Chinese website shows who they have been targeting. I guess the fact that PhotonVPS staffs actually replying in Chinese to Chinese web hosting forums such as hostloc.com also helps.

Signed up already. LA servers. Big benchmark scores. Really good CPU for a LEB. Great service so far… only 2 things are not so good. Only 2GB of storage will make you cry, and there is no VPS control panel to start/stop/reload the server. You’ll have to create a support ticket, but they are quick regardless of the time apparently. Mine was at 2am PST, and they finished the reload by 3am PST.

  3. The benchmark score of PhotonVPS is really amazing — around 270 with 128M memory. Normally you can only get a benchmark score around 60 with a Xen VPS having same amount of memory.

  4. The panel is out for the majority of the nodes with a few remaining. Just open a ticket to see if your VPS is on a node that’s on SolusVM already.

just to let you know, I thing the guys from Proton are messing with users VPSs, denying to reinstate backup and instead trying to blame “hackers”. this poor guy lost everything, no logs, no backup, how is it possible?

  8. How do you know? As been stated in the forums, the 1st thing a hacker would do is to cover his trace, i.e. removing logs, so how is it NOT possible? After all it is a unmanaged service so the user should be responsible for their own backups.

  10. alright, hardware is fast but their network and host is very unreliable.
I have had so many issues with them, 3 times machine rebooted last month. server very slow and lost network connectivity.

everytime I make a complain about system and network issues I get the same email asking for root password my server ip and how to reproduce it.. jezzz… so annoying.
they dont even bother to read my emails carefully.
    besides from poor english.

I guess you get what you pay for…

Im going back to Linode. no more low end vps. at least for a while.

    (from pingstat and statcounter)

    3. network seems to be used for torrents and freak downloaders from china. (found some forum posts on google)

    4. your technical support does not know anything.

    5. They cannot understand or speak english well. all emails I sent they dont even understand and send email back asking for root password.

  14. Matt:

I made a mistake and got these guys and didn’t read the reviews. It took them a little over a day to set up my vps. When I sent a support ticket after a few hours just wondering what was going on, someone sent me back a message saying it was still in the process of being setup. So it was finally set up, and the wrong distro was installed, so I fixed it through the cp, then when I came back after going somewhere I tried to login and my password no longer worked. I tried a few more times(thinking I might have changed the password to something else by accident) and next thing you know I’m blacklisted from the cp. Don’t get me wrong, I think its great that they’ll stop someone from constantly trying to get into your account, but it just sucks when it happens to me and I just got the thing. On top of that, when it comes to passwords I never mess up, this was the first time in a long time.. hmm

That was the first ticket regarding the vps setup. I got upset and pretty much gave up on the service after the blacklisting.

Problem resolved. A misunderstanding and issues were going on at the time. Jim was more than happy to fix the problem and offer a refund and/or free months of service. I’m happy. Response was prompt.
