PREFIBER - €1.95 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Netherlands

Updated February 2012 — PREFIBER appears to be offline for good. Both other websites that “Tom” was running are still alive though, but this VPS company has certainly bite the dust.

PREFIBER One provider that I have previously missed, and is reminded by emails from Tom their CEO, is Prefiber.nl. It is a Dutch hosting provider that has its VPS services in The Netherlands according to its data facility page. There are actually quite a few good offers floating on WHT that are still working. Take this one for example — use this ordering link to get “VPS Linux #2” for €1.95/month (~USD$2.59).

  • 256MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 30GB storage
  • 150GB/month data transfer on 1Gbps
  • OpenVZ

I am actually not too sure whether they are indeed using OpenVZ, and which control panel they are deploying. On the offer page posted on November 25th it stated “256MB memory and 512MB swap”, although their blog page posted on the 24th says that the same link is on their OpenVZ platform. Same with their more recent offer — says swap memory in the post, but selling the same OpenVZ package. Someone here might have actually purchased one before — okay to verify the virtualization + control panel?

They do seem to be a reasonably sized company, if they are indeed owning all these servers. They also run Denkers-ICT (dedicated server company) and Gamersway (game-server company) according to Tom’s LinkedIn profile.

DK has always(since 1992) been 25%, highest in EU
UK previously was just 15% then 17.5% and now its 20%
Germany previously was just 16% and now its 19%

I can only expect to see more EU countries increase their VAT in future …

OK… so.. 7 hours later I get an e-mail stating that there was some issue with ips but my vps should be available. Since this e-mail I have not received any login information for my VPS and like some other have suggested doing, the My Services tab in the client area does include an IP address, but it is not pingable and there is nothing regarding access to the control panel. So after this e-mail I sent Tom an e-mail explaining I still had not received my VPS information and was unable to access the VPS.

      Fast forward…17 hours later..
There has been no reply to my e-mail (and for those who are curious, they have no support ticket system, only e-mail). I have since sent Tom another e-mail and I am still waiting for a reply at current… I understand they might be overwhelmed with new accounts, but its nice to at least get an e-mail explaining whats going on and why my supposedly INSTANT activation has led to waiting 17 hours. At the moment I am not very impressed with this provider. I hope they start to pick up slack and I receive my information here shortly. It might be important to note that I actually had enough confidence going in that I actually paid for the Quarter and not just one month, I hope this was not the wrong choice.

As others have said, I/O access is ridiculously slow. Hopefully this is resolved soon.

        My Current Review:
So far prefiber.nl is rating about 7/10

        A. Activation was not instant (took about 17 hours)
        B. support is all by e-mail and usually takes 3-4Hours + for response at the moment
        C. I/O is pretty slow at current
        D. Need some documentation on how to make use of ipv6
        E. Routes look decent, but I/O lag makes it hard to tell

I have a decicated with netbook 2.5 5400 rpm drives in software raid 1 and that server generated 35MB/s for 1GB file, so when a hardware raid VPS node has 15MB/s on that fine it’s clearly oversold to top.

I am a little worried about how slow disk access is on the VPS. As previous postings have mentioned

For the last couple of days our amount of orders are much more then expected. This can cause low disc performance for some. We’re currently setting up extra nodes to transfer vps’es to. For our end-customers nothing will change except the performance (which are expected to go up).

Prefiber doesn’t reply support or billing e-mails. Yesterday my VPS, paid anually and running nothing, 100% idle, was terminated by Prefiber without any reason and I didn’t receive any reply from my e-mails until now.

    *** BUYER BEWARE ***

I am very dissatisfied with Prefiber. I signed up two days ago, and just cancelled subscription today.

First off, they advertise that your VPS will be ready in 5 minutes… took 6 hours to get mine; not to mention, I was never emailed my login info, had to find it in client panel.

Customer support seems to be very sporadic, sometimes answering less then a minute after an email, and sometimes never answering at all. Also, they never got back to me on either of the things I originally brought up in my support ticket.

I would recommend you keep looking, as there are better deals out there, with companies willing to work to keep your business.

I’ve had them assign some IPV6 addresses (they show up in SolusVM) to my vps but I cant get them to work, I can get the ipv6 addresses bound to the network interface (venet0) and the gateway and everything appear to be set correctly but cant ping or traceroute to any ipv6 hosts (like ipv6.google.com )

not sure what to try next, I feel the problem probably lies with the node not being correctly configured for ipv6 but I cant be sure…

I didn’t receive any answer from Prefiber.

The VPS was to be used as secondary DNS but I moved the service days ago to other provider as Prefiber is not dependable. The VPS is running without load for several days and then was terminated without any explanation. I think it was terminated by mistake but the lack of any answer/action by Prefiber after the fact speaks a lot about this company.

I am sooo disappointed right now.

I really wanted give Prefiber 3rd and 4rth and more chances to prove they are worth of hosting.
I really understand you are new business, you have many problems and limited resources.
But what is happening right now is just a joke.
    So starting point:

Instant activation: On 7 servers I have, 3 times it didn’t worked. I was told there is problem with IPs.
24/7 support and sales do not exist. Sometimes response time is 12 hours, sometimes 24. It depends when somebody is around. Tom seems to work 16 hours a day to make this business working but thats not 24/7 what website states.
All together 4-5 emails that I send to Prefiber were completely ignored. I was promised Windows VPS from them. I sent few emails, have been on Live Chat 3 times inquiring about it. I was 2 times promised it will be ready in 1 hour. It have been week already, no Windows VPS.
I have many short downtimes during the day. My clients reported 6 hour downtime yesterday, second time in last week. Today I had downtime as well for 1 hour or so. I cant login to VPS Control Panel (timeout connection) so I cant restart server to check if that helps. My clients cant even login to Cpanel as connection is to slow.
I already lost 3 clients out of 25 hosted on Prefiber servers since 2 weeks.
I hope that this will be a wake up call for you Prefiber. I know you are saying you are new company and you have got many orders last few days, but that is not explanation at all. I am so sad that I have to move next month as I was hoping for good quality of service. I didn’t really expected server load of 3-6, and crazy downtimes.

I really didn’t want to post this, but you simply don’t give me a choice, as I am desperate to make things working.

It is the very old “you get what you have paid for”. I think you and your customers should expect outages, sluggish performance and slow support from a VPS costing less than 2 euros for 30GB disk space, 256/512MB RAM, 150GB bw. IMO someone wanting to offer services to customers MUST test himself the services for some time BEFORE selling these services. Blaming the provider is just an excuse for losing customers is a poor excuse for a bad selection work of provider. Just take a look at the last 30 days of Prefiber:

      http://i55.tinypic.com/t6dwuw.jpg

How you didn’t notice that there is something going wrong until your customers left? Sorry for the harsh post but you should blame yourself for the bad choice and troubles it caused to your customers.

        • BTW I asked my friends to open old and new site in browser (sites have different domains now) and write their subjective opinion. 4 from 5 decidet hat new server is faster. And 1 think it is same (all this friends live in Ukraine).

Also, ping to ukr provider is 25 ms and 65 ms to this. It is more than 2x times difference, but… It is not online game and this latency is good enough for my photo site.

256K memory is not too much for apache+mysql but it is more than enough with nginx for static and apache for dynamic content

Why? The site’s visitors live in Stockholm? :-)

I said it is unfair because Mike is comparing the NL VPS with a provider in Ukraine and the connectivity between Sweeden and Ukraine is not that good. I have a server hosted in the world’s famous Pionen White Mountains data center (Stockholm) and I can’t use it to serve pages to Ukraine as the latency is high. I did test a VPS from GleSys (Stockholm) and the latency is also high.

          January 22, 2011 @ 10:31 pm | Reply
      • It is fair because i’m not comparing pings. I just compare server responcitivity and abilities to handle many requests per second. It is 10-20 seconds per request during 20-30 concurent connetcions to ukraine hosting server. And about 1 second to this server. And distance can’t be a reason of such difference )

        January 22, 2011 @ 10:53 pm | Reply
        • Francisco:

The question is connectivity, not geographic distance. If you are using a network and the server across the street is connected to another network, you are close to the server but the peering between the networks can be on another continent. Simple like that.

BTW I’m visiting your “old” site and the pages load immediatelly. Very fast. And I’m not exactly near Ukraine. :-)

THAT’S because when you tracert that IP from yougotsignal.com you’re tracing the route from THEIR datacenter to your PREFIBER box.

When you try to access a IP adress you’re redirected to few locations that redirect to ther locations before you reach your destination. That’s how internet works.

Install a tracert tool on your PC to test your own internet access route to that destination. If you’re having issues then call your ISP.

I purchased a VPS about an hour ago, and its IP address is still listed as 0.0.0.0 despite the status being “active.” As others have said, it looks like it’s not exactly instant. It’s also a little disconcerting that on some of the pages, the “Contact” link leads to a 404 and the layout is broken.

Oh well, for $3/month I’ll give them a day or so to straighten things out before I file a dispute with Paypal.

And one last thing: After signing up they sent me a confirmation email, which contained my password. Not only is it a terrible idea to email passwords in plaintext, the fact that they could email it to me at all shows that they store our passwords in plaintext. If they ever get hacked, your named, email, and password will be exposed, so don’t use your prefiber password on any other sites!

      • Alex:

Well, ideally they wouldn’t send passwords through email at all. Displaying it on a TLS secured webpage would be a much better option, which brings me to my second point: As far as I can tell, *none* of the pages on prefiber are TLS secured including my account page and control panel for my vps instance. I hope none of you are accessing these pages over public wifi!

        February 25, 2011 @ 11:52 pm | Reply
        • Agreed on the secure pages but every host and provider does it this way. How else are you going to get your password to log in the first time? Please point at a single provider that doesn’t email a client their password.

You don’t work for Network Solutions, do you?

        • Alex:

I’m not sure of any hosting providers that do this, but here are two better options:

          1) When the VPS is ready, send an email to the user saying that his VPS is ready for use, and that he can log into his web account to retrieve his VPS credentials.

    mib@bb:~$ df -h

So, it means that I used 3Gm quote is 15G but 0G available on host server. It is very common trouble for OpenVZ :( And nothing will work without free space, so server will be down now.

They say the have IPv6 but you need to ask for it. After asking the first time they say they have assigned a few IP’s. I checked and have none. I asked multiple times. After several attempts, finally they say they ran out and have requested new.

Asked for reverse DNS multiple times. At first they say they configured it. I check and it does not work. I ask again and again. Finally they say the need to configure a new DNS server. But a week later, still no luck.

If these guys would only respond to your mails within 48 hours and be honest, I’d be happy. It’s cheap but you do get what you pay for.

Needless to say, not very happy about this situation, I was hoping id give it a day and it would correct its self, but right now the VPS is about useless to me.

All of this, without replying to my support e-mails or notifying me of any changes. What a crock of BULLSHIT. Please do not waste your money on these guys, stick with one of the better EU options:

      – Vooservers
      – Hostfolks

      – BHost

All of the above are examples of companies who actually give a shit about their customers and their business. You guys at Prefiber could learn a lot from those guys about quality service and support.

For the last few days I’ve been battling a nearly unresponsive VPS, but, today, it’s finally come to a head. Simply saving a small css file in vi is taking upwards of 2 minutes, and my load average keeps creeping up over 3.00, even though I’m not running anything CPU intensive.

Take a look at this. 17 seconds to create an empty file:

    beala@superfly:~$ time touch test

    real 0m17.674s
    user 0m0.002s
    sys 0m0.004s

Most hosts, including myself, give credits for a publicly posted review. I no longer suggest to folks that they do it (Fran isn’t the only one here short on stock 99% of the time.) but it still happens from time to time. The offer is in my welcoming email but I don’t email offers of such.

The following e-mail exchange was “funny”, with them suggesting how to install the server again and what software to use (I am an IT professional, thats why I say that it is funny).

I would be stupid to keep working with a company where it just happens now and then that your whole server disappears over night and you find a different box occupying “your” IP address the next morning.

If this is the case then they can ask people to email reviews directly to them

What they are interested in doing is paying people to advertise for them. It has

Didn’t always get the answer from support, that I expected.
