LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

QuickWeb - $35.88/Year 256MB OpenVZ VPS

QuickWeb Due to popular demand I am posting this, which can also be found on this WHT offer page. QuickWeb has recently launched some low end packages using PhoenixNAP in Phoenix AZ. They were last mentioned here where you can get 128MB OpenVZ box for $23.88/year. A second package gets you the following test box “QW TestBox VZ II” for $35.88/year (~$2.99/month). Order that here.

  • 256MB guaranteed/384MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

These are on Supermicro single-socket Xeon 3440 boxes with RAID1. And Joe promised to do rDNS updates for free for LowEndBox readers :)

What I am more interested in though is their Intel X25M based OpenVZ offers in San Jose — $14.95/month for 512MB memory, 8GB SSD storage and unmetered traffic. A relatively cheap box to run a high performance database server (still depends on the contention though).

Usual disclaimer here: LowEndBox is hosted on a QuickWeb/Softlayer Xen VPS since June that QuickWeb provided me at no cost. They also bought a banner ad space here. Otherwise there’s no affiliation between LowEndBox and QuickWeb, and I am not a New Zealander :)

  1. quickweb are a wonderful VPS providers and i really would recommend them to anyone.

I got my first low end box through them and its still running strong, nice and snappy with great support including fixing my stuff up’s like putting in mv /* /var/www/… as root *whistles*

**note the last one did incur a very reasonable support fee to get fixed, but was well worth it and i have my vps back up and running in no time at all.

  2. Thanks LEA for featuring our current offerings, you even picked up VPS with SSD, we did got quite a few clients on it now and they are very impressed with performance :)

By the way setting up rDNS actually free for everyone since LEB reader or not just log a ticket and we will take it from there.

Thanks Phil for kind words you’ve been with us for quite a while now since last year? i think you were charged one off fee due to the fact that your server got SSH access disabled and technician need to mount the Xen image to access and do some changes.

    • yea that’s the one, I believe it was one of your launch offerings i picked up so it has been a while

but the fee was more then reasonable so I had no problems with it.

I have been with you since December last yet now and haven’t ever considered wanting to move :)

got myself a VPS time machine backup now to prevent this happening so i can restore it myself :) even though your support rocks.

I’ve been with QW for almost a year and I’m satisfied with their wonderful servers. :)

Btw Joe, can you give us an IP to test for? I’m looking to get more servers for my shoutcast radio.

  5. Seeing my cheap box at NordicVPS is under performing and their lack of support is astounding, it might be worth getting one of these.

    Nice deal guys!

Just bought the ‘DE XEN – DE Xen Lite 375 Promo’ yesterday. Very fast responds time from there helpdesk. I had a little problem setting up my IPv6 (tunnel), they did everything to solve my question, free. Yes, you do have to pay for major problems/fixes, its unmanaged, however, you can do free OS reinstalls via the SolusVM interface. They support pygrub os templates, you can run your own kernel, at least for XEN.
The DE Vps is fast and quick responding. Because I’m just a 36h day user of them, I can’t say anything about the uptime.
However they do have a got reputation.
And Yes, I got my free RDNS from Joe’s colleague :)

    I agree with JosephB,

NordicVPS *do not* answer any ticket,
but they can answer all the post in [Low end box] & [WHT]

    too sad,really!!
for a VPS hosting provider, NordicVPS ,
do not abandon your support ticket system.

    • one of the strength of QW is that we always answer and ‘resolve’ tickets in timely manner so we do not use any forums/blog as our helpdesk. That’s why you won’t see any of our clients complaining unresolved issues unless the sole intention is to troll probably :)

How many people are on that SSD? SSD’s are notoriously bad at writing (they only have so many write cycles and start slowing down after a while). You are right that could be a pretty cheap and powerful DB or static server, but if you have neighbors who are writing a lot of content to that same SSD you could also start hitting problems pretty quickly…

Indeed. On a box where you have some control over how they’re being accessed, or even on a node where you’re offering 100% hand-holding server management and can adjust people’s software so they’re not thrashing the drive, an SSD might make sense. In an environment like this, though, all you need is one customer who’s thrashing the disk and everything turns sour in a hurry.

      It’s a neat idea for a marketing gimmick, but honestly I think it’s a recipe for disappointment…

      • Let the manufacturer answer some of these reliability questions:

Drawing from decades of memory engineering experience, and now on new, industry-leading compute-quality 34nm NAND flash memory manufacturing processes, Intel® Mainstream SATA Solid-State Drives are designed to deliver outstanding performance, featuring the latest-generation native SATA interface with an advanced architecture employing 10 parallel NAND flash channels equipped with multi-level cell NAND flash memory. With powerful Native Command Queuing to enable up to 32 concurrent operations, Intel Mainstream SATA SSDs deliver higher input/output per second and throughput performance than other SSDs on the market today – and drastically outperform traditional hard disk drives. These drives also feature low write amplification and a unique wear-leveling design for higher reliability, meaning Intel drives not only perform better – they last longer.

you can always migrate to SATA based VPS if you think performance is crap :)

      • Maybe that’s why it’s listed as a testbox and not a production server….

        • just to be clear TestBOX based VPS are SATA based, SSD VPS is entirely different product/service.

Well i can guarantee that these so called TestBOX will have better uptime than the standard products of other host, current uptime is 100% since launching a month ago :)

    • Well as you can read LEB is hosted on it, I have never seen it offline. ( exception for the “DOS-Attack” )
I do not have any VPS with them though, just an observation.

I have a tiny VPS with them since Sept 2nd (2010),which has an uptime of “67 days, 23:27” (and counting).
    (80mb ram – 3gb disk – 300gb transfert, located in Dusseldorf/Germany).

I can only say one bad thing about it …. it doesn’t have ipv6 :-( (but I knew that upfront ….)

  13. compared to another vps that give 256MB guaranteed, your data transfer is smaller, only 250 GB, where the other give 1000GB and only 35$/yr. hope you can upgrade this in future.

    • We do not like selling bandwidth we don’t have, our Supa nodes just got 10TB bandwidth allocated, it is easy to oversell and assume everyone won’t use 1TB bandwidth… in this case everyone is guaranteed bandwidth. If you need guaranteed 1TB b/w more you need to look at our Softlayer plans as we have 100TB per node! :)

Been using them for a month now. Their support so far has been great and emails are replied to promptly, guess it helps that I’m in a time zone that’s similar to them. Server performance has been excellent, no DT yet. Being able to install a desktop enabled Ubuntu server will also mean I’ll be with them for quite a while :)
