LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

Quillhost - $5.99 Xen VPS with 512MB

Quillhost.com RAM has gone cheap. But has it gone that cheap? From this WHT offer, Quillhost is offering 20% discount on their already-cheap Xen VPS plans. Yes — it is not OpenVZ plans that can sometimes be oversold like crazy, but you do get “dedicated memory”. (Yes I know you can over-commit memory in Xen 3.3+ with balloning but it’s still much more dedicated than OpenVZ’s). So after 20% discount, for $5.99/month you get:

  • 512MB memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 200GB/month transfer
  • 2 IP addresses
  • HyperVM
  • CentOS / Fedora Core / Gentoo / Debian / Ubuntu / Slackware

DC is in Kansas City MO. Currently their website is giving me 500 Internal Error so I can’t really poke around…

Update: Website seems to be back but a bit slooooow…

Bought a dev vps from them. It works great, but it’s sad I can’t buy one more as they’re out of stock…out of luck. :(

  5. They are at wholesale internet in Kansas City, which has some fairly bizzare TOS/AUP policies.

After seeing the offer here, I got a Xen VPS with them — and it’s been a decent experience. They took a day to provision, and there was some downtime. Debian image didn’t have the xen libc. Xen console goes directly to root shell. Latest Ubuntu is 8.04. HyperVM backup is disabled. Support system is slightly quirky. HyperVM is kinda annoying.

Anyhow, once you get over all that, the hosting is adequate. I would recommend it. Everything that needs to work, works. Great way to get a fast VPS going. Payment is month to month, without contract.

I just hope they stay in business, and don’t screw over the people who are using this offer!

  8. I’ve been with them for a couple months and I’ve been happy with their service. My VPS has been fast and available every time I’ve went to use it. However, I don’t have a monitoring service setup so I don’t know what the real uptime has been.

Their support has been pretty good as well.

  9. I’ve tested one of their VPS boxes for one month but due to some personal problems I did not stay with them. Anyway, I am still registered as a customer and I received an email from them :

I have decided to close all VPS operations based out of Kansas City(69.197.x.x and 209.x.x.x) and Chicago(38.x.x.x) from 1 August 2009. While this may not be a good news for those who are being affected, however, we’ve been working to improve the infrastructure at St. Louis(206.225.x.x). Please do note that we are not closing the St. Louis operations.

Though you and your readers might like to know that.

  11. The site needs to be updated:

    – Still listing specials as summer specials.

    – Re: http://www.quillhost.com/xen-vps.php “Order before 31/01/2009 and get free DirectAdmin with all plans except VPS-256!”

They still provide Xen deals, I recently got my second one. Support is sometimes not fast, but the service is pretty robust and fast for the price.
