  2. Greetings Sir, Does RackNerd VPS has Cpanel installed in it? I am searching for VPS hosting, I came across this article. And after reading this article thoroughly, I go to youtube for VPS configuration on RackNerd. But in that video, I did not see any Cpanel. Contrary to it, he is installing CentOS. I am not aware of CentOS. Plz, answer me.

  4. Robert:

I finally had to give up on RackNerd. Signed up with them when they first started and it was great. Installs are fast. Network speeds are good. Servers seem to not be overloaded.

The problem I have run into time and time again is my VPS going down or losing it’s internet connection. Every single server with this issue traceroutes through ColoCrossing and to be honest here it’s a problem I’ve run into many times with any provider who uses ColoCrossing for server hosting or are leasing their servers/datacenter space.

The server I just cancelled showed online in the main control panel. It also showed online in the VM control panel. Problem is the server had no internet connection and had been down for hours like that. This was the third trouble ticket I would have had to put in over the past three weeks for the same server. Three weeks ago I had just cancelled another server for the same reason that was in a completely different datacenter and location but was also a ColoCrossing operation. The odd thing was that server never, ever had an issue until they force moved me to a different datacenter out of LAX and ended up on a ColoCrossing server.. asked to be moved and was to KC.. right into another ColoCrossing DC. No more CC hosting. EVER. AGAIN.

To me this was one of the best providers out there but it seems over the past year it’s gotten much worse and to have two diferent servers go down a total of six times in a month is just not acceptable at any price level as it takes down my entire website operation so I have been left with no option but to cancel and move somewhere more reliable and it definitely will not be a host that uses ColoCrossing in any way.

    • Hi Robert — Thank You for being our valued customer and for providing us with the opportunity to work with you. Overall, I’m happy to hear that you’ve found our network speeds and performance to be satisfactory.

With regards to your VPS going offline or losing internet connection, we have not had any major issues on our end that we’re aware of. I think I have a pretty good idea of what your account is, and so I verified the node you were on and it has been online without any outages. I also verified your VPS IP address has not been nullrouted recently.

Are you certain that you do not have any iptables or firewall rules within your VPS’s environment that could be causing this type of behavior that you’re seeing? Often times, clients will set up firewalls like iptables or CSF and forget it’s in place, sometimes default firewall configurations or misconfigured rulesets can cause false positives like this.

P.S. We do not utilize ColoCrossing for our Los Angeles VPS services, and have never forced anyone to migrate to a ColoCrossing location, so I believe there is some misunderstanding here. While I believe that I have a pretty good idea of what your account is, feel free to e-mail me at dustin@racknerd.com to confirm your email address on file with us so that I can make sure I’m looking at the right account — I can then provide more specific details based on your account history, and give you options from there. With regards to options, we also have non-ColoCrossing locations available if that is a specific requirement for you, though at this point it doesn’t seem like this issue is datacenter or upstream related (I can confirm once I am able to identify and confirm your account). I appreciate your time and look forward to your e-mail — thank you again for the opportunity.

I do appreciate the response and I do not as a whole blame Racknerd for the issues. I blame ColoCrossing as this is an ongoing issue I have noticed after using several other providers who sit behind their network. I can confirm the correct email address.

The node in question had been moved from LA to Dallas several months back for latency purposes so it was actually on a Dallas node when this happened. While it still shows LAX as the order point the server was in Dallas behind Colo. I was actually forced to a different datacenter originally (a second one in LA forcing an IP change) but with the latency to my location I opted to be moved to Dallas as I have sub 10 ms response times from here to there. I was not aware at the time it was a Colo location.

Since these items are public I will share my own monitoring done from two different datacenters on top tier providers. The outage is clearly confirmed from both locations.

In both cases my server was online and accessible via KVM, control panel, etc but no inbound/outbound internet. Without any configuration changes, reboots or otherwise once I submit a trouble ticket the server generally is accessible shortly after. What was done on that end I am unaware of but at least one other incident while the server was down I was told that no problem could be seen which is the root of the problem. I would be understanding if there was a known issue that had occurred but when it is clear from multiple paths the server is not accessible when I am told it is lies at the root of cancelling services. Between the two servers in separate cities and providers as well as my own two independent connections at my location (att/spectrum) all four confirmed no connection available to the server. Again in the end I made no changes, committed no reboots or service restarts when this happens and not a thing has changed or been modified on the server for weeks and only ran Bind DNS and a single Icecast instance with all other services disabled.

I can find no logical reason for an inbound connection to take an errant route and fifteen minutes later with no changes returns to normal. It happened twice before this last incident and the third one was the cause for the cancellation. The prior server cancellation was also behind Colo IP's and had the same ongoing issue three times until I cancelled it as well. I have one server left, not behind Colo and in the year it's been online never had a similar issue and all three servers ran disc mirror image OS and setups.

I am only leaving this info in hopes it helps find out what was going on because I don't think it is normal at all what has happened but more alarmed that no one seems to be able to detect that anything even happened. My best move now is what I did which was cancel VPS services I have little control over and switch those operations to another dedicated server that I have fully control over and can directly control who's network it sits behind.

        • Hi Robert — historically, our Dallas location has always been very solid and it is very rare we hear from customers of any network issues in this location. It does sound like this may be a case of your ISP or particular route/path not playing nicely between you and our datacenter. To verify this you can utilize a tool such as ping.pe to ping your VPS IP globally, if you see it is responsive on ping.pe locations when you notice it’s down on your end, then that would indicate some sort of isolated issue on your local end. In such cases, we’re always open to working with our customers and our upstreams to make route adjustments or optimizations as necessary. Every location of ours has a BGP Optimized network with multiple network carriers in the blend. We have a write-up on how this works here: https://lowendbox.com/blog/what-is-a-bgp-network-bgp-border-gateway-protocol/

In the rare event there is a problematic carrier (i.e. if your ISP isn’t playing nicely with an ISP your path is routed towards, etc), we can always make manual route adjustments accordingly.

I see you posted some traceroute’s but if you don’t mind emailing me with your source IP, as well as an MTR – we can go from there and see if any tweaks can be made on our end to help with your routing.

Rob – I live in Plano and have a RN VPS in DFW for nearly 6 months now, and have not experienced these kinds of network issues. The VPS is chugging along and hasn’t been offline at all. Are you sure it isn’t an issue with your Spectrum connection? If your cell phone plan has hotspot enabled, you could also try connecting from your phone’s hotspot connection (5G or LTE) and see, at least that would give you an idea of where the issue is originating, for example if it works there but doesn’t from Spectrum, that would tell you the issue is with Spectrum.

FWIW I’m getting sub 6 ms from Plano to DFW.

            • Robert:

Oh I definitely check things before I put in a trouble ticket because I have accidentally triggered my own firewall defenses so to me it looks like a server is down when it’s not. Thing is I have four different in house internet connections – gigablt, cable and two 5g connections all on different carriers. Outside I have dedicated servers in Kansas City, Chicago and ironically one in the same building as my Racknerd VPS. My pings from it to the server ran an average of 300us to 1ms average and the outside KC server generally averaged 0.5-2 so no connection issues. Every sever and VPS I run also has Smokeping which monitors all the other servers. It is simply impossible for that many different connections to all be unable to reach the same IP unless there was an internal issue. The routes never change until I hit the Colo IP/router and each time that’s where the problem happens.

I have tried to make it clear I don’t look at Racknerd as the culprit other than being on this companies network. The primary reason I have dumped so many VPS providers is due to how many use ColoCrossing. The company itself is a well known host of spammers, scammers and hackers and for what I see it very much looks like termporary null routes probably trying to mitigate an attack on another customer. This was not just on Racknerd but over the past year at least six other VPS providers. You don’t see the same thing happen over and over again over a years time and not figure out where the problem lies.

Last year I had over 15 VPS’s. All of them are gone now because almost every single one were on CC. I have one Racknerd VPS left out of five.. the only one not on a CC IP address.. and the only one I have never had any type of issue at all. I did have one in a LA datacenter but was moved from there to a different LA DC that had a bad route for me so I asked to move to Dallas because I knew my big server sat in the same building. I didn’t at the time know it was a Colo DC.

Racknerd was always responsive to problems and had a good experience with them and hopped on board when they first appeared here. But as they grow it seems CC is their main provider and to me the best option is to get as far away as possible from that company. I picked up a $9 dedicated server which is already outperforming, way more stable and level ping times than any of the CC hosted VPS’s. My problem is the operation is live streaming. Even a brief blip most people would never even know happens can bring everything down right in the middle of a show. A one second outage can bring everything down but someone hosting a website would never see a problem. Guessing I have just outgrown cheap low cost providers using networks operated by very unreputable operations.

Anybody know if the price goes up after a year on these deals?

    August 30, 2022 @ 10:15 pm | Reply
    • Hi Eugene — Great question!
In the years of business we’ve yet to increase existing customer service pricing — and we don’t intend to :) Instead we’ve found success with expiring promotions (preventing orders on legacy promotions) and adjusting pricing/resources to best fit market conditions without having to raise existing client pricing. This means you can expect for renewal to be the same promotional pricing you obtained when signing up!

As for added peace of mind, customers can request earlier renewal (we’ll advance an invoice) when you’re comfortable to ensure that you obtain the same pricing. Customers are also able to purchase an extended billing cycle upon checkout of desired, thus securing the pricing for many years ahead.

We look forward to working with you!
