LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

ReVPS - $5 256MB OpenVZ VPS

Updated May 2010: ReVPS.com failed to connect after 7 May 2010. Don’t think it is coming back at this point in time. FAIL.

ReVPS Via this WHT offer. ReVPS, with a domain created merely 6 days ago, has advertised on WHT with its cheap virtual server offerings. Same guy who ran this Chinese hosting operation that has been around since 2006. For $5/month the package includes

  • 256MB memory
  • 15GB storage
  • 500GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ

Server seems to be with BurstNET in Scranton, so I assume they will be using vePortal if ReVPS is indeed reselling BurstNET’s offerings. Note that it also has a 512MB free VPS trail for 10 days — good way to test out the service without forking out anything.

Now, the statement about the company is a bit strange.

ReVPS’s corporate headquarters is located in USA, NY The Puget Sound region is home to numerous influential and high-profile technology firms, which has enabled ReVPS to successfully recruit a wide variety of experienced talent. ReVPS engineering staff operate out of Spry’s HostNOC datacenter.

At the same time the owner’s address says Beijing CN. I also thought Spry has DC in Washington — not New York. Neither is it related to HostNOC, i.e. BurstNET/Nocster in Scranton PA. I live thousands of miles from US and even I know the differences…

“The Puget Sound region is” typical Chinese English automated translation.

Good luck getting support in a decent English or be well understood.

  2. They appear to be using copy from the old spry.com “About Us” page (with their own ill-advised edits).

It’s not close enough to justify a DMCA from us, but perhaps it would be advisable to take into account that ReVPS is actively harvesting their site content from established providers’ sites.

  3. *shrug* I did that when I was first starting out I have to admit. Rewrote everything when I realized that it didn’t fit though and had the time.

I’ve seen hosts promote their ToS and docs with a “Hey, like what we’ve written? You can copy it, just link back” in there. The 12 credit hours of prelaw in me moans when I read that.

  4. I’ve made a test account with them and it isn’t good. I got 500 – Internal server error all the time.

  5. That would be a webserver error, not a box error. And usually easy to fix since the 500 error usually puts the error in the error logs.

I used the VPS for more than 3 months, but suddenly (4 days ago) everything stopped working – no server, no support, no nothing.
Not to mention that their official website does not work and “whois” information is fake!?

This is the worst hosting service I’ve even seen!

  7. Yes I can confirm that the domain stopped resolving since 7 May. It’s from someone in China (same as host8.org when I first looked at it), but not sure whether it is still the case.

  8. Fly-By-Night is seemingly becoming more and more common now days :\

I don’t quite understand these people though, It’s not hard work what so ever. I mean if you already got it figured out why shut down in a few months? You can keep going and make more profit in the end and to be honest i love doing what i do and I’m not in it for the money like 99% of the new ones coming out now days.

But i guess there will always be these fly-by-night scammers that come in and take peoples money and then leave ):

  9. @Andrew — some are definitely fly-by-night scammers. Some are just kids with no business sense thinking they are going to become instant millionaires with a couple leased servers and badly written advertisements on forums.

You can spot the naive pretty easily. Fly-by-night scammers — maybe with a bit of investigation. Con artists — hmm.

  10. You have a good point there, Some have been doing it for years (Con artists), Those are going to be the ones that you get screwed by and lose a lot of money.

But for the most part now days its just small people wanting to make a quick buck but they don’t understand what kind of situation they put the client in when they just disappear like that. They leave the client hung out in the dry the client loses money, The client most of the times loses his server files since a lot of people hope for the best and don’t keep backups (not recommended now days).

But i mean take us as a prime example, When we started we ran everything on 1 Core i5 with 8GB DDR3, Within 2 months we are were we are at now, We have servers all over the united states and a few in Romania. It just goes to show you what you can accomplish with just a tiny bit of effort from yourself and your lovely staff.

@Andrew of 123system, so let me get this correct? within 2 months you grew to how many servers? 100, 200? 500? LOLS i doubt it…

I know your trying to be cool and all and trying to show off but i highly doubt it.

Your domain Date Registered: 2010-2-16, now lets hope that in the future you are also not in the dead pool.

Also how many staff do you have any proof, picture of these staff? or picture of your office so we can verify all these will insure you will still be around in few months…

    Only time will tell…

@Chris – While I don’t agree with your methods of questioning Andrew, his deployments, his staff, or the like – I do have to add to this, that I’m not overly sure Andrew has got the staff he needs to make his business successful.

I just got a snarky reply from one of his staff members, about how my VPS service would have been down completely had they not moved my VPS to another DC. All because I wanted to know the status of an rDNS request – and my expressed disappointment that they didn’t have certain things done prior to moving customers.

Anyhow, the replies got even more smart ass after I gave them a small dose of the sour they left in my mouth.

If for no other reason, I will gladly go pay one of the “big guys” double, even triple what I was paying Andrew and 123 systems, just to be treated like a customer.
