SiSVPS - $5 256MB OpenVZ VPS in Germany

Updated January 2012: Website stopped working on 31 December 2011. I don’t think it is coming back.

SiSVPS It was Sawyerr from SiSVPS who contacted me a few days ago about their $5/month VPS plan “Cooper” that can be ordered here. It has

  • 256MB memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 250GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVZ

Servers with Hetzner in Germany. Sawyerr claimed that he has a few techies at SiSVPS with combined experience of 12 years. It appears that they also run TruDigits.com (link fixed), which has exactly the same theme/layout as SiSVPS. Domain was registered in September 2010 to an address in Sarasota, FL, which actually belong to an US mail forwarding company MyUS.com. If you dig deeper into Sawyerr’s other domains, you’ll find that he is actually Nigeria based with a large portfolio of websites.

Thanks for the listing, a few corrections. The parent company is TruDigits.com (not TrueDigits.com), heck I had wished that domain (TrueDigits.com) was available way back in 2009 when TruDigits.com was Registered. I am a web developer with a Ghana/Nigerian clientbase and the forwarding address on the whois is a legit service run by MYUS for corporations and individuals. My suite number can be verified by an online assistant on MyUS.com.

SiSVPS is very new but we sure won’t hit that dead pool (never) since its running off profits from TruDigits for now until it starts running on its own profits.

All nodes are from Hetzner (EQ series) and they are not oversold, as of yet. Certainly we are running budget VPS plans and may have to oversell in the future but that will be done moderately. :)

Thanks for the listing, Admin (Sorry, I havn’t picked our your name). Just wanted to clear a few things before anyone thinks this is some advance fee fraud.

Was working a new layout for trudigits. I really am at a loss as to why my first comment wasn’t approved yet the comment of someone attacking me showed up. Seems we don’t fight fare here. Not a problem, people.

          Who is attacking you?

    • @Sawyerr: If the person you meant “attacking” you is me, I will need to clarify that is only a joke and nothing more than that, most of the people here probably have got more spam than we deserve regarding those money scam emails, so please at least allow me to make fun of it :)

That’s alright. Its hard to make up a joke like that and not step on innocent toes but I’ve got steel toe boots :-P.

We have gotten a couple of happy customers from here and I say thanks guys.

        Cheers.

  5. Would I trust a company like this? Answer: NO! There are so many scams that happen in Nigeria, I wouldn’t even consider it and the fact you would consider overselling is worse.

Well, the choice of trust rests with the consumer and his ability to take the risk. If I was a visitor to sisvps.com and needed a VPS I would go for the lowest plan of $5 and watch it for at least a month or two just to be sure before I put sensitive data or anything serious on it. What’s the risk involved? $5. Surprisingly we are getting signups hourly (thanks to this place and the other sites which “reiterate” content from here) and some of them are for even the higher $15 plans. You see it all depends on you really, and your ability to take the risk. I have been with Hetzner for 2 years and Hetzner isn’t stupid to be billing a scammer’s credit card bi-monthly for over 24 months for several root servers.

As to your point about overselling, you probably do not run a budget VPS business or have any clues as to how things work. Do your homework about server costs, bandwidth costs, internet costs (1gbps port), cost of IPs and let me know what you’ve come up with to have $5 usd plans sitting on a high end node without overselling. I have said this before and I will say it again, we will oversell our servers moderately and make sure all VPSes are running without problems. Really if you have a problem with my idea, sisvps.com is not the place for you. Go somewhere else where they swear they dont oversell yet their boxes time-out as if stuck in an infinite loop. I am not interested in telling customers professional lies they want to read at the expense of trust and honesty.

    • I wouldn’t have a problem with a VPS in Nigeria. My concern though is that I’m sure a large number of ISPs have large ranges of their IP space blocked, at least for email if not web and the rest.

Makes me wonder if it would be worth it.

That’s not saying anything about the provider here, just stated in general. At least you know the country has a lot of bandwidth. :)

And there are no scams in the US, UK or AU. Get a grip.

      • “Well, actually, loads of scams happen in Nigeria, so don’t tell me to “get a grip”, I know scams happen everywhere, I’m not stupid, Nigeria is known for scams. Anyway, I’m satisfied with Sawyerr’s response.

    • Is overselling really a bad thing? The big guys such as HostGator clearly oversell on disk space – Overselling is a good thing when managed in the right way.

Overselling is not bad. Overloading is bad.

      • Sawyerr:

Overselling isn’t a sin if managed. In my opinion though, offering unlimited diskspace with fancy fair usage policies (that the customers are most likely not going to have the patience to read until they are suspended and referred to the TOS) is the sin. :P

What is the bandwidth like to&from USA and Australia? I’m in Aus and I’d use the Silver VPS for:

    1. ‘bouncing things’ i.e. loading a video from US site to VPS, trannscoding it to low quality then downloading it from VPS to home in Aus due to my low bandwidth connection at home.
1.1. SSH tunnel to get around unfair filters here and use compression to save bandwidth.

    2. Torrent certain things that I have the right to share but are likely to trip the unfair laws in America put in place by their corrupt government. (I don’t intend to hog, just occasional things)

Please contact support@sisvps.com or the live chat system with your questions. Sorry for the delay, I wasn’t following up on things on this post immediately after the ddos attack here.

Thanks. I prefer to ask questions like these publicly though, for others to read…

I did some tests, but it didn’t really tell me as much as I’d hoped… heres a type-up anyway (sorry if the indents don’t work and it ends up a mess):

        Download speeds (in practice):
Home: fluctuation between 50 and 400KiB/s with is typical. up to 1000KiB/s when choked with multiple segmented downloads.
USA VPS:up to 21MiB/s from archive.org or nearby server, but > 10MiB/s to anywhere else is rare.
        SiSVPS: Unknown to me

        SiSVPS -> Home
        Ping: 419 ms
wget: 80-350 KiB/s (although it seemed to average out the same as the USA VPS)
        axel -n 10: up to 900KiB

        SiSVPS -> USA VPS
        ping: 131 ms
        wget: 2.6MiB/s
        axel -n 10: ~7.5 to 9MiB/s

USA VPS -> Home, for comparison
        ping: 300 ms
        wget: 60-200 KiB/s
        axel -n 10: up to 900KiB

For another test I ran wget, axel -n 5, and axel -n 10 test to both SiSVPS and my USA VPS at the same time to see which would complete first and the results showed a significant amount of fluctuation making it practically impossible to determine which is ‘better’ and conclude anything useful.
The only consistant difference was the ping latency, but I’m not sure I’m really bothered by it.
Glad to see that America isn’t the ‘center of the internet’ and connecting elsewhere can be just as good :P
