LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

SonicVPS - $5.58 256MB Xen VPS

SonicVPS Via this WHT offer. SonicVPS has a massic launch discount — 65% off using coupon code sonicsixfive. The discount is recurring which brings their “Xen 256” package down to $5.82/month.

  • 256MB memory/512MB swap
  • 10GB storage
  • 150GB/month data transfer
  • Xen/SolusVM

You can choose either Portland OR or Denver CO for server locations. The domain has been registered since Nov 2008 but they have only been in business since November 2009. There’s WHOIS protection on the domain although it is not difficult to figure out who is running it (the same guy behind post-2009 StarkVPS, KodoHost and others). There is also this thread on HostLoc (with my rusty Chinese I think the reviews aren’t too positive).

    Here are some translations:

    C: 就是starkvps.com的新老板开的,晕,原来他们的老板很厚道的,很好说话的,后来转给了Richard Kwan,这个新老板很抠门,我一不爽就不用他家的了
E: This company (SonicVPS) is opened by StarkVPS’s new owner. StarkVPS’s original owner was originally very generous/friendly, but when the company was transferred to Richard Kwan (owner of SonicVPS as well), he became very stingy and hence I left them.

E: Yep, he’s a very stingy owner. When I stopped using his Xen services, he offered me OpenVZ services at same specs/pricing as his Xen offering, which I naturally rejected. (Implication: Xen is more expensive than OpenVZ, hence OpenVZ should have more resources at the same price level).

Personally, I tried to order, and at the last checkout page, it redirected to a broken page.
That really broke it for me – you can’t manage your own billing system!?!

I ordered a VPS and so far everything went fine. ordered 512MB Xen in Denver. When I ordered it the automatic setup gave me a VPS in Portland, so I submitted a request to have the VPS located in Denver and it took them something like 2 hours to do it. They answered the request in like 5 minutes top (I didn’t really count but it was fast) and 1 or 2 hours later the VPS was in Denver.

support was nice and friendly. Let’s hope it lasts.

These guys had/have bad rep (couldn’t find anything on WHT) or it’s just that it’s the same guy/network that run similar business on different name?

I recently signed up with SonicVPS, and my experience has been great so far. The network is solid and there haven’t been any unexpected reboots to speak of. I submitted a single support ticket to date, and received a reply within an hour. They even suggested that I could drop by the web chat to say hello.. A+ for customer service :)

I recently had a bad experience with a different low-cost provider, and I am very happy to have found SonicVPS.

Just a couple things worth noting: There are a few broken links on the main website (nothing serious), but the support area and control panel work like a charm. Also, I don’t think SSL is available on the control panel at the moment, but I will fire off a ticket to support when I have a chance.

    Thanks.

    Hello there,

tsj5j – We had some issues with our provider which we resolved and credited all clients. Either with a refund or additional service – that’s the least we can do right?

I wouldn’t have offered any one the same service at the same cost – I gave all OpenVZ clients who had issues 6 months free. Yes that’s correct, 6 months free. We had issues and we’re the first to admit that.

Also, in the last 2 weeks we’ve updated the website and converted a few things to make management a lot easier – most of it was internal but you can see on the front page the differences.

It’s your choice if you want to give us a go, but we definitely do our best and are honest with the service we provide.

SSL is available on the control panel as well. We were working with WHMCS ways to improve the billing / support system to improve support / administration. This also meant we had to purchase another SSL and wait for that to clear (takes 24 hours or so).

We appreciate the feedback and it’s well within reason.

    Thanks!

Chris: We make numerous acquisitions and each business runs as it’s own entity. It allows good flexibility and we pass this on.

tsj5j: Not sure what broke – if others were able to order on the same day as well as provide feedback?

  10. Please contact us if you still wish to have a Xen node – we will manually set up an order for you.

Alternatively, you can sign up for our new KVM offerings, which don’t have coupons or codes because they’re always low price.
