The Vultr Free Tier is Here! Here's All the Details

Vultr Vultr announced a free tier yesterday, which has prompted a fast-growing thread on LowEndTalk as people clamor to get on-board.

Here’s a bit about it from Vultr:

Organizations have an urgent need to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of the workloads they’re deploying in the cloud. Cloud operations need a fundamental transformation in order to lower costs, lower barriers to entry, and raise the bar for performance and global reach. Too many organizations spend up to 30-40% more for their global cloud compute than needed. That’s a tax on your business.

We want to eliminate that tax by delivering a better economic cloud compute model and better cost-to-performance for every developer around the globe. As the world’s largest independent cloud service provider, this is why we talk about democratizing access to the cloud for everyone.

Our first step was to expand the number of global cloud data centers, including in IndiaLatin America, and Africa. Our second step was to provide 2 TB of free bandwidth access to everyone. Now, we’re taking the third step. Today, we’re announcing a new Free Tier for our flagship Vultr Cloud Compute product.

How To Get One

  • You must sign up for Vultr and have a credit card on file.  No PayPal or other forms of payment – must be a credit card.
  • Your account must have 2FA enabled – which you should always do anyways.
  • Vultr recommends you fill out all your profile info, which includes your company if any, industry, and what you use your VPS for.

I’m not sure how significant that last bullet point is, but Vultr is using a “weighted score” to determine who gets these.  It’s not purely random, according to their announcement.  Presumably this is to reduce fraud, spam, and other ne’er-do-wells.  So if your personal info is easily verified, you pay your bills, and you look like a developer who might some day lead your organization to spend millions at Vultr, you probably have a better chance.  Or as they put it:

This is an early access release. We are prioritizing access for users who request it by completing the form, and will be incrementally granting access to users who sign up for Vultr with a business email address. You can learn more about the program’s eligibility and admission process here.

What You Get

The system is:

  • 1 vCPU
  • 512MB RAM
  • 10GB Disk
  • 2 TB bandwidth
  • IPv4

Some fine points:

  • The announcement doesn’t mention IPv6 but that is likely, given that Vultr sells IPv6-only VPSes and there is no shortage of IPv6 addresses. UPDATE: IPv6 is included, see below.
  • Locations are not specified but my guess is that you’re more likely to see this in places like Silicon Valley, New York, Amsterdam, and other common locations rather than Osaka or Melbourne, but that’s just a guess.

I certainly appreciate Vultr’s LowEnd attitude:

With these resources, you’ll have enough compute power at your disposal to prototype and run many small-scale websites and web applications.

👍

  3. Running is a popular way to stay healthy and in shape. In fact, it has become one of the most popular activities in the world. But did you know that you can also use running to promote good health? In addition to weight loss and improved heart health, there are many other benefits of running.

Has anyone every actually got a free tier?

I pay a decent chunk to Vultr every month for around 6 servers. I’d love to get the free tier to support some not for profits and to do some testing.
