Go with something a little bit more serious.

I wanted to give my thoughts on this… I have two VPS’s with them and haven’t had any problems that past year and a half I’ve had them. As to getting something more serious…. for me, I just needed a place to put a few casual websites but with more freedom than shared hosting services at the cheapest price. It isn’t the best service ever but you get what you pay for, right? Honestly, if my server were to go down for an hour or two, it wouldn’t be the end of the world for what I use it for. But like I said, I haven’t had any problems. Just saying.

I got two of the $12/yr ones last November (on nodes “Easy” and “Zulu”) to host some simple (mix of static and dynamic) sites for friends and family, and the occasional ssh tunnel when I’m on public wifi. So far there’s only been one incident around mid-December where connection to the Easy node was flimsy (tested from several locations). Though support did not provide much information on the reason, it was resolved in ~12 hours. Everything has been smooth since.

I/O is around 80-110 MB/s depending on time of day. I would say their AUP is a bit restrictive (no irc/games/p2p/adult), but if you just want to host mid-/low-traffic websites, $12/yr is great.

    IPv6 is coming soon: https://twitter.com/URPad/status/268116269318934528

Hi customer from the Urpad $12 VPS here,

As for me I’m really happy, the technical support is really fast (but not the billing support, well if you consider a day of waiting to be slow…), performance is good, all in all a good purchase (And I will order a new one for other need probably).

The only minor problem though is the low number of different OS, not turnkey or other interesting stuff.

The Ubuntu server 12.04 is also a bit bloated unfortunately, so be sure to turn off samba and other unnecessary service if you install it because it can bring your server down. The reason is that asian bot try to enter your server by brute force, and so ‘DDOS’ you via Samba (It’s not Urpad specific mind you, I have friends in France and Belgium having the same problem). So, you might want to fail2ban and max the jail time.

And/or you can install a Debian 6 minimal (available). Work great but when they say ‘minimal’ they mean it, so be prepared to install thing like vim and sudo…

    • Nodes change, hardware gets better as does capacity, it is not always possible to offer old customers the same deals as new ones, I am sure they could possibly do it but the disk space given at the time of the deal would have been based on the capacity at the time, in order to upgrade old customers they would need to migrate your VPS/ probably change IP too which would cause you down time and them hassle.

      :)

Picked up a $12 deal, instant activation on payment and it has been running like a champ for over 24 hours. Snappy response times across the board. Disk IO and network tests were surprisingly good as well. Definitely seems to be a good buy. If anything comes up in the next few months I will post it here, at least everything is off to a great start (can’t always say that based on experience with other LEB deals).

UNDER THE DISTANCE SELLING REGULATIONS, THEY HAVE TO GIVE ME A REFUND EVEN IF I CHANGE MY MIND WITHIN THE FIRST 7 DAYS FROM PAYMENT – I ASKED FOR A REFUND WITHIN THOSE 7 DAYS THEY SAID NO. They then started to threaten me when I said I was going to report them.

Horrible company, fast but RUDE support team.

      As stated on their TOS
“Gameservers (e.g., Minecraft) are prohibited on our servers due with the level of CPU abuse we’ve seen originating from them.”

My opinion is if you have broke the TOS, then you are not entitled to a refund.

Just wanted to make a quick observation here since Liam is incorrect.

Many providers offer the $12/year offer with the same amount of resources.

Also, the whole no game server and IRC thing is a big turnoff, go with someone that offers this as it shows they are more stable and know how to control their nodes.

        February 25, 2013 @ 6:12 pm | Reply
        • O.o:

My opinion is just that. You can’t say a company doesn’t know what is it doing because it doesn’t provide a service. It’s ridiculous to say such a thing.

It’s kinda like saying company A. is crap because they don’t provide dedicated servers. Or doesn’t provide xen, or doesn’t provide exchange server, or doesn’t provide etc…

So the whole no irc gameservers is a turn off for him/her. fine leave it at that, don’t buy it. But to go on saying that a company doesn’t know what it is doing because they don’t provide a service.. is well.. Oo

Hence why I replied with “Frank..ly you lack knowledge in this environment.” and if you can’t understand why that reply, I’ll waste no more of your time. :)

          February 26, 2013 @ 12:16 pm | Reply
    • We don’t allow game servers BECAUSE we want you to offer a solid and stable service. We don’t wish to cater to that market, instead we focus on providing a consistently stable and reliable service without allowing DDoS and abuse magnets such as IRC and Game Servers to be your neighbors on our node. Sure, other providers offer them. That’s fine. They’ll probably have more gray hair on their head before we do. =]

  47. I had ordered one VPS from them and stunned by the performance of the vps when comparing with the previous vps i had with other hoster.

And i went on ordering another high end vps with them. Contacted their live chat , they help me a lot in support and finally i placed ordered with them.

I should say that the vps speeds are awesome and in 100mbps port I get download speed of 80mbps where i get 10mbps in other providers of same 100mbps port.

    February 26, 2013 @ 5:58 am | Reply
    • There is a little confusion in your words. As on 100 Mbit Port, you should get 12.5 MBPS of Speed (according to 100 Mbit / 8 = 12.5 MBPS). So, around 10 MBPS is that you are paying for. But, if you are luckily provisioned on a 1 Gbit Ported Node, then you should get 125 MBPS of Speed (according to 1000 Mbit / 8 = 125 MBPS). So, here you are getting 80 MBPS. I was lucky in 2 of my VPS and got 1 Gbit Port Connectivity so I get there 40-60 MBPS and sometime 100+ MBPS. But, on other VPS at LA, I got 100 Mbit Port and that’s why always get around 10 MBPS. I hope this can make you clear.

      February 26, 2013 @ 6:30 am | Reply
      • Thats what i belive too. But they said i am on 100mbps port. But i get download speed of 80mbps.

        These are the results http://prntscr.com/uhkw6

But i am not going to stay with them as they are turning of my vps as i am getting more visitors to my site. Which cause many concurrent access.

And they said that they won’t allow more than 1500 connection per ip but i get more than 7000+ .

So they turned off two of my nodes and I got dedicated with another provider and I am good now.

If you have big site which gets more visits then dont have vps with them as they will urge you to get dedicated server.

And i am with them just for 2 days and am going to ask for refund. If they are good they will do.

        February 28, 2013 @ 4:07 pm | Reply
        • If you have paid via PayPal, then they may not refund. However, you are lucky that they said you 1500 connection per IP. But, when they turned off my VPS, they told me 900 per IP. But, as far I checked the log, it was only about 500. :(

In hindsight, I should of TERMINATED you immediately. But I’m a nice guy. I understand that you obviously are in over your head, and that an unmanaged service is not for you. I kindly responded to your RUDE and abusive ticket with a very kind, sensible response:

      “Hi there,

Please keep in mind that you have signed up for an UN-managed VPS, not a managed VPS. You can connect using Filezilla using your server IP address as the host, and your root details as the username/password. Please use port 22 to connect via sFTP. Since you have subscribed to an unmanaged VPS plan, it should be understood that the best we can do for you with requests like this is point you in the right direction. The documentation on Linux virtual servers are very detailed, with many resources available to those who may not be familiar with Linux VPSes, but who are willing to learn. Google is your best friend when it comes to learning how to manage a Linux VPS.

If you do not change your attitude, we will terminate you immediately. We are not a ‘scam’, we provide services to thousands of very happy customers. Please be more respectful when communicating with our support staff. If you would like a free VPS control panel to help you manage your VPS, then we will be happy to offer you a free install of either Kloxo, Webmin, or zPanel so that you may more easily operate your VPS.

      All the best,”

The offer still stands for us to install a control panel for you. But if you have any crazy outburst again, you’re gone. We love our customers, but not when they act like how you were acting. Sorry. Though you’re still an active client and have been given a second chance to act like a decent human being. I’m more than happy to assist you the best I can and point you in the proper direction of being setup.

yeah, wow! I really like the look of the 2gb VM deal but a few issues!

Firstly, the test IP on the page form for ordering is wrong for LA, I had toe mail support and they gave me 98.143.159.202.

I live in Australia, but VM’s here are exe ++ so need something west coast. Looking at their LA POP. I started pinging this and doing a few trace routes from a few locations…..

Pings worked from all locations, come back 5minutes later
No pings work, then some pings work (I am testing from 3 ISPs here to see results and traceroutes).

Right now, 2x pings work from Optus and Telstra but another one from Exetel (Local ISPs) do not work.

I have hit up their suppor again but not a good look!

  59. Hi, I ordered one of these servers a while ago, very quick set up, happy enough with the performance.

However, I have a number of concerns relating to security:

My chosen passwords were emailed back to me in plain text!!!!

Fair enough, according to the header the mail was sent TLS encrypted and should therefore be safe in transit, but I don’t really want my mail hoster reading my system passwords :S

So I had to change them straight away.

There appears to be a problem with certain subdomains on urpad.net which mean the urls default to insecure. If I edit them to include a https at the beginning the code in the page seems to override this and the page ends up insecure. I’m not sure yet if the credentials are transmitted clear but sensitive personal data ends up being transmitted in clear text in the client area pages.

As it stands I can’t really be confident about using this VPS for anything I need to be fairly secure.

Hopefully these issues can be addressed satisfactorily…

    • After contacting urpad support this was all resolved quickly and satisfactorily!!

Thanks to all for getting this fixed.

As I said before I was very happy with the speed of provision and the performance of the VPS – now I can add that I am also very happy with the support provided.

I’ve tried at least four different providers advertised on this website in the last couple years. Two of them just quit without warning and I lost my money and data. Urpad, though, has been very stable for me. Since they have been around for five years I feel like I can trust them not to go out of business tomorrow. The uptime hasn’t been a problem and the speed is usually great. A few times when I have had a problem I opened a ticket and they were quick to respond and solve it. I plan to continue using them. They have my high recommendation.
