V for VPS - $4.99 384MB OpenVZ VPS

Update May 2011: VforVPS.com is no longer resolvable from 6 May. Looks like “Mike Joe” is done a runner (if it is indeed his real name). WHT thread as reference.

V for VPS Mike from V for VPS has sent me a special coupon to test out their VPS products. Their “Good VPS” that is suitable “for Small Sites and basic users” costs $4.99/month, and it comes with

  • 384MB guaranteed/512MB burstable memory
  • 10GB storage
  • 1000GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

Use promo code LOWENDBOX you can try it for $0.99 for the first month. Order it here. Servers are in Chicago with FDC Servers, and you can get test IP & download files here. They also appear to be IRC friendly where you can run your own IRC server. According to Mike that they are not a new business but merely with a new name — on a domain that has only been around for a week.

  1. If I don’t like the service, can I cancel it after that first month trial?

    • If you don’t like the service, you wouldn’t pay for the second month I guess? Do need to read the contract though about cancellation period, although I doubt these are enforceable.

      • Well, yeah, If I will not pay for a service that don’t like xD

But sometimes they charge extra for cancelling their services, etc…

I will read, but in the most cases. there aren’t policies about cancellation.

They can invoice you, but really – what can they do? Not saying that in this instance the provider would do that, or even has that cancellation clause, just looking at it practically.

        • I’ve heard some unpleasant stories involve debt collectors and stuffed credit rating for individuals, etc. It’s mad to send debt collectors for 5 bucks, but you never know sometimes :(

        • Debt collectors are powerless nothing to worry about.

btw, I have a debt with vpstree..submitted a cancellation, no answer, my vps stays up and now I have an extra charge of 10% (Now I must pay 1.09 USD xD)

Another case of absolutelly NULL support. They forgot they own a business…

    So far so good…

Signed-up and got my vps immediately. I am currently using the promo and trying the vps for 1$ for first month. Haven’t had time to check any benchmarks, but its located on pretty decent backbone. Though, I have already noticed that one server I have in the UK is unreachable from the network, seems to be null routed currently. I have opened a support ticket with them to see what can be done about this.

I will update again as I have had time to test the VPS more thoroughly.

ATM an easy 9/10 for ease of sign-up and quick setup. Everything seems to be as promised so far.

Support times so far seem “normal”:
      – 1.5 Hours for /dev/tun access.
      – Still waiting for network issue to be resolved, but I figure this is something much further upstream than them and will probably take a while to resolve.

I’ll update more as I have more time to look around….

WHOIS should raise some red flags: Clearly invalid phone number, and the address and ZIP code don’t match.

“Mike Joe” (“Mike Lay Joe”?) appears to have a profile on LinkedIn, but I can’t be arsed to register to view it, and they’re blocked from bugmenot…

They(vpstree) must not be using WHMCS then? From my exp with WHMCS, cancellation process is automatic…

Well, their european node is down and has been so for the last couple of hours (16h to be precise). I would not recommend this company.

    • We also got a cheap EU node VPs from them to use as an offsite backup for some websites while we were changing some of our servers. After complaining that it had been down for nearly 24 hours, we get a cut and paste job email blaming us for spamming and to look on spamhaus and that our VPS is terminated.

I’ve never heard of backups spamming before.

    • Well, I got a mail saying they have problems with that node, do you have that mail?
My vps at this moment runs fine with them =P

If you are thinking about signing up for their swiss VPS, don’t. The IP block that their IP address range sits on has been tagged by spamhaus for spamming, and so they’re are terminating customers on the block, regardless of if they are actual spammers or not.

      Very Disappointing!

I have come to find over the past few days that VforVPS has failed to resolve issues with their data center and has had their server suspended, without notice to their customers. Also sounds like they are trying to scam their customers in this situation telling a good portion of them that they have been suspended for ‘spamming’ or that they had a ‘Raid Failure’. The worst part is, and I am sure at this point VforVPS doesn’t care at all about their customers, I had actually chosen to use their services after 4 solid months of hosting for my e-mail and dns servers. Spent the last 4 hours scrambling to move all my services, when I got home from work to find my server down and their webpage non-existent. Also, want to talk about highway robbery, I just paid my balance not 2 days ago, you would think if they knew their servers were going down they would stop accepting payments till the problem was resolved.

At current their website is even down, as it seems it was also hosted on their Chicago node with their vps servers. The few comments they have made on WHT haven’t had anything to do with helping their customers or explaining how they intend to resolve this issue, my guess is they are so overwhelmed because of their lack of action to the issues above, they have no chance of explaining their way out of this one. I suggest any customers of there dispute their payments with paypal and hope they actually refund your money. (So far it seems they are trying their best to prevent this from happening, even in cases where its obviously the right thing to do.)

      http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1020342&highlight=vforvps&page=2

@VforVPS. Let’s get to the bottom of this. Which parts of the following would you like to agree with or deny?

      1) There was no RAID failure.

      2) A more accurate version of events is as follows:

PrivateLayer received some spam reports and forwarded them to you for action.

You did nothing about the spam reports.

PrivateLayer saw that you were not acting and that their IP space was beginning to get blacklisted, so suspended your server.

Your customers started to open tickets about their VPSs being down.

You realised (too late) what had happened and in a panic sent out emails blaming a RAID failure to hide your inaction on the abuse reports.

You then contacted PrivateLayer to ask for the server to be unsuspended but they refused as you hadn’t bothered to take any action on the spam reports.

You then decided to try to cover your tracks and avoid refunds by accusing ALL your customers on the server for spamming and trying to make out that you were innocent in all of this.

The server is still down (suspended).

Be aware that several of your customers have at your suggestion contacted PrivateLayer direct and received a different explanation to yours (within the limitations of their Privacy Policy).

If this is a more accurate version of events I respectfully suggest that you start processing refund requests now before you get so many charge-backs and PayPal disputes opened that PayPal decide to limit your account, thus risking your ability to pay FDC for your Chicago server and causing a “chapter 2” to this story. I hope to goodness that your customers on your Chicago server read this and are taking backups just in case.

Good luck to all those involved!

  17. I don’t know what happened, but they have been down since at least Friday 05/06/2011. I cannot access anything, not even their main website. Not an email, not a phone call, no warning or anything.

I just wanted others to be aware.
