LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

VirtuallyDedicated - $15/3 Months OpenVZ VPS with 384MB

VirtuallyDedicated Mark from VirtuallyDedicated emailed me about their current East Coast data centre special. For their “Cloud Servers” in Scranton PA the current promotion sells the cheapest plan for $5/month. You get:

  • 384MB guaranteed memory
  • 20GB storage
  • 300GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ

The very term of “cloud servers” is very confusing. However with their setup, your entire volume is mirrored on another server which allows fail over if the physical server dies. Prepayment of 3 months is required.

  1. After experiences with Burst and their resellers, anything in “Scranton PA” gives me the shivers.

    Just sayin :)

@ JosephB. can you elaborate on that? It’s always good to have a perspective.

  3. I think VirtuallyDedicated is using a different backend, i.e. VPSGrid with mirroring storage instead of vePortal. However they might be in BurstNET/Nocster’s DC so you might still get the same quality.

  4. If it’s on the same boxes and in the same DC then it’s hardly going to be earth shatteringly different that Burst and all their problems.

I can’t see that a different backend will make that much of a difference, however it will be good to keep an eye on the progress.

  5. Hello,

To clarify, we do not use BurstNET, we colocate our servers with Volumedrive which has a link to HostNOC(Burst) as well as a few other network providers.

We manage our own servers are never have been resellers in the 3+ years we have been in business. We are just offering this special to sell out space in our east datacenter, I am not sure how long it will be available. If you have any questions feel free to email us at sales@virtuallydedicated.com and we’d be happy to assist you.

    Hi Mark
Could you clarify what slice of the processor you are offering with the East Coast blowout specials?
I see on your main site you spell that out in the plan breakdown. Could you do that here for the 4 offerings in the blowout?

    February 22, 2010 @ 3:42 am | Reply
  8. Sure thing. You can use just a little bit less processor slices than our normal packages.

As far as burstable CPU goes, any VPS can use up to 3 full cores. All of our servers in the east coast center are quad-cores. So if there is available CPU your VPS will be able to use it.

As far as guaranteed CPU goes, you can expect about 420MHz per 384MB. In other words we put 8GB of RAM per 4×2.33ghz processor.

    Hope that helps.

Thanks for the fast response Mark,
I signed up for a package last night and had an extremely fast setup time.

I probably wont’ have tons of time to set things up until later today or tomorrow, but will try to give an evaluation soon.

Not sure what the deal is there.

  14. Hello,

Our web/dns server had some issues last night, sorry about that. None of our other servers were affected.

Looks like the DNS issues were ongoing.
This morning, got a response back from support and they were running fine. They also provided me with the IP address for reference in case it continued.

In any event, my server was unaffected by this and did not experience any down time.
So far so good with Virtually Dedicated.

  16. I am always picking on providers running their DNS on the same box or inside the same network. The very reason why two is required is for redundancy, but apparently when network is not available, it more than just connection to web server gets refused — name resolution failed as well.

    $ host -t ns virtuallydedicated.com
    virtuallydedicated.com NS ns1.reseller3k.com
    virtuallydedicated.com NS ns2.reseller3k.com

    $ host ns1.reseller3k.com
    ns1.reseller3k.com A 208.53.145.22

    $ host ns2.reseller3k.com

  17. Hello,

We don’t host DNS for anyone but our web site. So it seems a little overboard to run a separate DNS server seeing if our web/dns server has issues our web site will be offline either way. Running a separate DNS server is only helpful when you have multiple web servers behind it. Although this is the first issue we have had in a long time but it only affected us, none of our customers.

Signed up for hosting on east…pretty fast servers…really happy, but not happy about speed out of the data center…was told by VirtuallyDedicated that it was an ongoing problem and currently only allow 1.5mbps thread…when its meant to be 100mbps…sooo yeah they said hopefully it will be fixed soon…i really hope so…downloading at 40kbps :(

  19. Hello,

All speed issues have been resolved.

    Thanks!

  20. Brian:

They had perhaps 10 minutes of announced downtime a few nights ago, almost a week at this point.
I really haven’t noticed any issues myself since then. Prior to that there were some DNS issues that really didn’t impact me or my server.

2 weeks now I think on my server, I’m still very content. Not a very long period I realize, but initially, I think I’m getting good bang for my buck!

Mark, thanks, was 40kbps now 250kbps considering your location and my location not too bad. thanks for addressing this…though server download within the U.S download its 1.7MB per second…would have expected faster but might have been time of day…other than that not bad for the price. :)

  22. Thanks Brian and David.

David: 1.7MB/s is actually 13.6mbps (1 byte = 8 bits). So depending on where you are uploading and the fact that the port is shared that seems pretty good to me.

I can assume, but the post you link to doesn’t specify the host.
The person posting makes it seem evident, but not verified.

  27. Well this sucks. Was the “east coast blowout” to make the business more appealing to potential buyers? It makes me feel like I’m on shaky ground with my VPS accounts and I haven’t even had the time to start using them. *sigh*

  28. Brian:

I’m feeling that impression as well. Quick fill a few slots and make your numbers look good for the sale. Information would be a good think to keep people from jumping ship.

I feel the same, hope my account is safe…or there might be legal battles otherwise. i see blueshorehost is keen, as long as the maintain our accounts and improve the service im okay…but any price hikes and im gone after a year

    Frankly, I’m not that upset.
What will disappoint me is a bad transition, or lack of announcement, if that time comes.
I imagine we all take our chances on low rent VPS’s like these, and when this happens we can’t be taken by surprise. Personally, I’m happy enough with the performance that if I can keep my pricing with any new owner, I’ll probably stick it out.

This is where we all learn why good back up practices and pre-arranged moving plans are more valuable than gold :)

  31. Hello,

Sorry for not responding sooner, I was not monitoring this thread.

RockMyWeb Media maintains multiple VPS subsidiaries and it has not been announced which one is for sale. No matter what happens, RockMyWeb will always make sure customers are taken care of. This is not the first time in the three years that portions have been sold off and the reason it has never been announced is because it was a smooth transition for customers.

    Thank you.
