VPS Royale - $4 512MB OpenVZ VPS

Updated March 2011: VPS Royale website is now redirecting to parked domain. Lots of reports of failed services (see comments). I think we all agree that Conner has done a runner. FAIL.

VPSRoyale Thanks to Matt for pointing to me this WHT offer. VPS Royale has just launched and is offering 20% off from all VPS packages when you use promo code LAUNCH. Their “Big VPS” does not sound low end at all except for the price — $4/month after the discount. You can order yours here.

  • 512MB guaranteed/1024MB burstable memory
  • 50GB storage
  • 10Mbps unmetered bandwidth
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

They are using BurstNet in Scranton. The sign up form is very clean. There is not much on their website though that describe who they are. Standard ToS and AUP — no IRC. Domain registered in March 2010. All 4 NS are on the same class C (on the same box actually), and their website is hosted with Kerplunc (TinyVPS, ServerBytes, etc).

The Paypal account that they use is limited. It’s most likely unverified too. What a pitty.

  4. Hey Guys!
Very sorry about the unable to pay issue.
We had a verified account and PayPal randomly suspended it. We’ve provided them with all of the info that they requested and we are just waiting for them to give us account access back.
If any of you have any questions or complaints then feel free to send me an email personally at connor@vpsroyale.com

This was pretty much just laughably awful.

Running Debian’s apt-get upgrade for 2 or 3 packages on took 10-15 minutes for completion. Transferring files yielded a blazing 30-40kbyte/sec. Compiling something? Grab a coffee or a nap or something; you’ll be waiting.

After cancelling my VPS after 2 days, I created a support ticket to inquire about getting a prorated refund for the remainder of my payment. This ticket was closed without a response. Yes, it’s “just” $4, but if support tickets are going to be ignored and closed for billing, I can’t imagine they’d do much better when it comes to other support issues. Very unprofessional.

    Stay away.

    • Hey Damian,

I’m sorry but these are the first we are hearing of either connection or IO issues. Everyone else has been hitting right at our 10mb/s throttle.

You opened up about 3 support tickets (by accident or on purpose, i’m not sure), and we closed the redundant ones. Your other ticket was responded to.

Please be honest about what actually happened. If you had provided us with the information that you were getting slow network speeds then we would have been happy to look in to it for you

      November 21, 2010 @ 6:44 pm | Reply
    • Stefano:

I also signed up for one of their VPS, disk IO is ridiculous, about 20MB/s (other providers are more than 6x faster). Also sent them a ticket about that.

Stay away is my suggestion too.

      • 20MB/sec is actually pretty good for a VPS. Or did you mean 20KB/sec ?

        November 22, 2010 @ 11:16 pm | Reply
        • Stefano:

No, it’s 20MB/s. Anyway, compared to others (like NordicVPS or YardVPS) it’s really low (Nordic is 60-80MB/s, YardVPS OpenVZ is 120MB/s and YardVPS Xen is 300MB/s). And you see it, for example, when you update packages (apt-get upgrade): the installation is really slow.

        • Hey,
Just ran a test on a completely standard VPS on one of our nodes(exact same node as Stefano) and i got 240 MB/s

Would be happy to provide the LowEndBox admin with access to verify this if he wants.
Of course this could have just been lucky and at a time with very low load

          [root@test ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/output.img bs=8k count=256k
          262144+0 records in
          262144+0 records out
          2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 8.95368 seconds, 240 MB/s
          [root@test ~]#

Just to compare, here is the same test run on a Linode VPS taken at the exact same time

          [root@lightsaber ~]# dd if=/dev/zero of=/tmp/output.img bs=8k count=256k
          262144+0 records in
          262144+0 records out
          2147483648 bytes (2.1 GB) copied, 87.3021 seconds, 24.6 MB/s

          November 22, 2010 @ 11:26 pm | Reply
        • You need to add `conv=fdatasync` to dd to make the value comparable.

          November 22, 2010 @ 11:31 pm | Reply
        • Stefano:

This is what I get on my VPS:

          dd if=/dev/zero of=test bs=64k count=16k conv=fdatasync
          16384+0 records in
          16384+0 records out
          1073741824 bytes (1.1 GB) copied, 129.174 s, 8.3 MB/s

As you can see, it’s even lower than what it was before. I hope you’ll find a solution.

  14. Damian:

The speeds Stefano posted was approximately what I was getting. 8.3mb/sec for disk IO would have been fine for what I was intending to do with the VPS, but as Stefano also pointed out, apt-get was unusably slow, as was compiling anything. I’m not sure what was causing the issue.

Still no response about a refund.

Domain expiring is one thing, it seems that their blesta license has expired. I guess that triggers an alert for a backup-and-move exercise, provided the VPS still works.

I have a VPS with VPS Royale, but the I/O is painfully slow. Sometimes, I sit there waiting for a shell to load whilst I connect in.

My VPS is up though – 55 days – just really really slow unfortunately. Seems like it could also be bandwidth pegged, as there is intermittent lag on the connection in addition to the slow disk.

Am also curious about the Blesta license thing – sent them an e-mail.

  26. Last month my VPS at VPS Royale went offline for around a week with no response from the client contact e-mail. The VPS came back on-line eventually however the “management interface” (Blesta) is no longer functioning properly and I can’t log in to restart my VPS (required for some updates to take effect). No response from their contact e-mail in over a week of requests.

I hope it will all get sorted soon, but it appears the owner may have gone AWOL.

Re: the I/O issues, there’s a known problem with the virtualization kernel version my VPS was deployed on with random I/O blocking that should be fixed with a newer version. I didn’t consider this vpsroyale’s fault, it is what it is when you deploy the latest and greatest sometimes.

No reply to me either. No change to the invalid license. And now I’m getting upwards of 75% packet loss to my VPS. Not really sure what to do in this case. I have a good length of contract in front of me, but this machine is basically unusable.
