LowEndBox - Cheap VPS, Hosting and Dedicated Server Deals

VPSTree - 99 Cents 64MB OpenVZ VPS

VPSTree Joe from UNIXy emailed me about unmanaged VPS service at VPS Tree. I am not sure whether VPS Tree has even been launched yet because their VPS plans page does seem to be a little bit strange — 70GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps and calling it “Plenty of Bandwidth”? But anyway, the real deal is at their 99 cents/month VPS — and no contract! You get

  • 64MB guaranteed/86MB burstable memory
  • 5GB storage
  • 20GB/month data transfer on 100Mbps
  • OpenVZ

It stated very clearly on the page that “it is very important to note that this VPS is not fit for production use. It is ideal for learning, experimenting, and hosting personal non-business low-traffic Web sites”. You also need to read VPS Tree’s ToS because you can order it. Their website is hosted in The Planet in Dallas on a cPanel box with adjacent NS, so I assume the VPS will also be hosted there confirmed by commenter “Jordan” that the servers are wth HostNOC in Scranton PA. The domain has been registered since January 2010. I am also not too sure about the relationship between VPS Tree and UNIXy. On VPS Tree it says UNIXy is their “managed server partner”, and on UNIXy it says it’s “brokering this deal” and “leading the marketing effort”. UNIXy is however more established and has been around since 2006.

Well, their TOS is such that it prohibits everything. Took 30 mins. to read it and if they are that strict, guess ppl have to just run a static site made of html on a VPS :)

Having said that, looks like they do not allow adult content. Granted though I wouldn’t be putting a porn site on a 64meg install in this case.

I don’t think a VPS with 64mb ram is suitable for a control panel. There are some guides at Linode and SliceHost which are useful. LEB also has a custom script available for low end specs which installs the necessities to run a website.

      • Well, most of my vps are for mirroring my website for each country.
For examples, if the visitor was from Indonesia, then they will be redirected to the Indonesian based VPS server. If the visitor from US, then they will be redirected to the US based server.

        So, I have several subdomains for example:, id.erawanarifnugroho.com, us.erawanarifnugroho.com, sg.erawanarifnugroho.com, jp.erawanarifnugroho.com, au.erawanarifnugroho.com

Except for mirror, I am using them for monitoring my another server. If my server is down, they it will send me an alert using email or sms

But now surprisingly I tried to install Webmin and got success and is working fine so far.

    October 13, 2010 @ 9:46 am | Reply
    • Bro, 64MB is quite sufficient to use Kloxo under the condition that Centos Host-in-a-box is preinstalled, and all the mail functions are turned off, don’t use apache and tweak the mysql setting.

You can look at my life test site http://www.primefootwear.com , as it runs on a 80mb no-swap no-burst ram, but it runs apache, sqlite2, tinydns and qMail functions.

On a very low memory you can use yum on a limited fashion by first changing the enabled=1 parameter to enabled=0 in the /etc/yum/pluginconf.d/fastestmirror.conf file, then limit the memory stack to a lower value etc: ulimit -s 128. However, if you can’t do bulk updating/installing (yum -y update), then you have to install the package one by one.

If you’re using debian, yum isn’t your tool.

        • No problem, bro. If it is for production server and you need it immediately, yes, it’s good to have a basic server management add-on.

lowendscript works fine, installed lots of additional crap, still works fine. Then i decided to run a serious test. started loadimpact.com to stress my wordpress setup and this box performed really well. Better than standard shared hosting. And it kept serving pages even with 50cuncurrent sessions. Almost without slowing.

        these are the results :
        (clients/user load time in sec)
        10 / 1.41
        20 / 1.34
        30 / 1.78
        40 / 1.67
        50 / 1.87

of course i can provide loadimpact.com link to prove it. I did the test a few times, same results. I’m not experienced in VPS, so maybe this is just what you expect with such a low end box and your script.

Well, I am a total hatchling :) in terms of Linux and VPS so couldn’t go any further. However, I downloaded the file and then copied it to root using winscp and then ran the commands and got errors just like the above (wordpress)

      • If you can’t resolve github — that means your local resolver is broken.

        Do

        echo -e 'nameserver 8.8.8.8\nnameserver 8.8.4.4' > /etc/resolv.conf

to use Google’s public resolver, and then try again.

        # /etc/resolv.conf

Edit it using your text editor, and use the nameserver as LEA said :

        nameserver 8.8.8.8
        nameserver 8.8.4.4

Save it, and then reupload it to the server.

@mina what about to read post above instead rude demanding from people to shut up without reading their posts? Mala said that it was a lot of emails sent without reponse and you replay to this with ignorant “shut up… how about contacting them..”. As rm said.. billing period start from the day when you order vps disregarding the fact that it may take several days and vps still isn’t up.
I am not VPSTree customer but as I see from responses above people have serious problem to reach any kind of support even for simple rDNS setup.

looks like these people are practicing what they mean by unmanaged. I guess they are not managing themselves either :)

I canceled mine yesterday and canceled the paypal subscription also. No reply from them. Have selected the cancellation type as end of billing period. So I guess, they mite cancel it then.

        Jim Snow,
I just request for rDNS, if they give client ability to change i’ll never request for support, since they are unmanaged provider.

        I dont think so…

i canceled the two i have already and by one server i choosed by accident “immediantly” not “after Billing Period” that was already somedays ago but the vps is still up…

  34. I’ve been busy this past fortnight, but finally I have successfully setup Kloxo on my $0.99 VPS.

The difference with Garman’s 80MB offer posted earlier at LEB http://www.lowendbox.com/blog/garmanonline-3-80mb-openvz-vps-exclusive-offer/ is that Garman sets the RAM to 80MB but he provides the Centos Host-in-a-box template. The only thing I have to do is upgrade the CentOS from 5.3 to 5.5 and harden the VPS.

On the other hand VPStree provide only 64MB burstable to 76MB with bare CentOS 5.3 template, so I have to install Kloxo first then upgrade the VPS. Without the mail server, just DNS, Web server and MySql, it now idles at 40MB. Server is quite fast, but if you expect to have thousands of hits, then you might want to add some memory that can be done through their client area.

  36. Apparently, they charge $1 per GB of bandwidth exceeded. Beware! Why cant they just limit the VPS?

    my 2 cents.
don’t buy it. I had one vps, they didn’t even process my delete-service request. They are not answering tickets for more than one month.

Support does seem to be non-existent. Ordered a VPS 6 days ago. Not setup and no response to multiple tickets.

Yes, the support doesn’t exist n_n I have one too… They answered a first ticket about TUN device… later was disabled… new ticket, and no response until now. More than 1 month ago.

I am wondering if they answer the tickets for the “normal” plan customers.

What about submit a ticket in

    http://www.unixy.net

That company is the “partner” (or something like that) for the 99C vps

The same login doesn’t work, I think they wouldn’t respond. Please beware of the company… as good as a scam (I have a working server still, but new order will probably never be setup). Don’t waste your 99 cents – these guys can make a lot of money through ppl like us who would “risk” a dollar with them.

Hmmm I don’t think this is a scam, but yes an abandoned business. I wonder what will happen if my VPS fails. I love it because the performance is incredible. I use it to sync some files between multiple VPS’s

And yes, unixy doesn’t manage the same users, but there is a BAD…BAD notice. visit them and it says, “Notice: this domain has been redirected”

      OMFG OMFG!!!

    • The host node at https://chestnut.vpstree.com:5656/ has been dead for a few days, unfortunately taking my VPS with it :) but another node at https://oak.vpstree.com:5656/ is still alive. And the main site is still up. I’d guess either chestnut crashed and there’s no-one around to fix it, or it was shutdown for billing reasons. Ah well, it was certainly fun while it lasted :)

  46. Wow, I’m glad to hear that I’m not the only one in this situation. I had my machine for 3 months or so, then boom nothing. I’ve emailed all of the vpstree.com addresses and a unixy address. Today I called the number listed as the technical contact for the vpstree.com domain and got connected w/ Softlayer Inc’s tech support, who were understanding, but couldn’t do anything for me. Guess this one is a bust. Interestingly, does anyone else’s IP address go to an error page from trustedproxies.com?

While I not really surprised VPSTree disappeared I am a bit disappointed that there’s never been a statement of any kind from Unixy [http://www.unixy.net/].

      • No idea why unixy teamed up with vpstree in the first place, when one is obviously targeting the upper end of the market.
