Vultr - $5/month 768MB KVM VPS in multiple locations and $5/month 160GB storage VPS in NJ

Vultr_SSD_Cloud_Hosting,_VPS_Servers,_Hourly_VPS_by_Vultr_-_VULTR.com_-_2014-04-20_07.22.01Vultr is the next provider in my series of surprise posts! Having come “to the scene” at LowEndBox and LowEndTalk only a couple of months ago, they have quickly gained popularity. They technically have been featured before in the 2014 Q1 Top Provider Poll, where they came in ninth, but I felt they needed to be in the spotlight just a tad more. Vultr has SSD-based cloud servers starting at $5/month in multiple locations across the globe. Last week they got stock back in their London location. In addition to that, they currently offer services out of New Jersey (NJ, USA), Dallas (TX, USA), Los Angeles (CA, USA), Atlanta (GA, USA), Chicago (IL, USA), Tokyo (Japan), and Sydney (Australia). If you think that’s a long list, keep in mind that their Frankfurt (Germany) and Paris (France) are currently out of stock and will be available again in the future. Contrary to some other “cloud” providers, Vultr offers you the option to deploy any distribution you like by uploading your own ISO, which gives this service a real nice edge. Vultr uses modern hardware with latest generation Intel CPU and pure SSD drives. The bandwidth varies per location, but I see a Level3 and an nLayer logo on their website, so I think they are at least used heavily in the USA and Europe! If you give them a shot, or already have, please share your experiences with us!

As a limited time promotion, Vultr doubles all the payments you make up to $100! This is not a LowEndBox.com promotion as this is a surprise post!

While Frankfurt and Paris are listed as out of stock, you could get lucky by getting an instance there. I clicked on one of those locations to get notified and got a ‘Pending’ instance to see it being deployed about 15 minutes later. So, always worth a shot if you need something there.

Vultr accepts payments via Credit Cards and PayPal. Each instance comes with one IPv4 address, more IPv4 addresses are currently not available but may be in the future. IPv6 is also still under development. SMTP is blocked by default to prevent SPAM. To unblock SMTP you need to contact support and fill out an authorization form. For more information, read their FAQ. And as always, read their Terms of Service before ordering!

Paris is available quite often but Frankfurt hasn’t been rolled out yet, expecting this within the coming days

Performance-wise I’ve had great luck with them. I didn’t want to like them as they seem like such a DigitalOcean rip off, but I’m becoming a fan. The custom ISO option is great. Allows for things like loading CoreOS — which is not possible at DigitalOcean.

I’m tempted to move off DigitalOcean for these guys, but I prefer to give my money to DigitalOcean until they give me a reason *not* to support them.

    • Joe Merit:

Wouldn’t a good reason not to support DigitalOcean be that they give you less performance and less resources than Vultr for the same or more money ?

      • xxdesmus:

Vultr is likely going to run into the exact same situation if they somehow become as popular as DO (which I really doubt). Vultr has more headroom at the moment because they are less popular, which allows them to offer more resources for a lower price to try and steal users from DO. If Vultr blows up in popularity they’ll be in the same exact situation where they either need to raise the price or oversell like DO has done.

Linode oversells less, but the price is higher. DO has a lower price but oversells. If Vultr becomes popular they will need to pick one of those routes.

        April 28, 2014 @ 11:44 pm | Reply
        • I digress. If we become popular? We are quite popular already. It is the design of our backend and our special sauce that will make our performance long lasting. We also are not afraid of closing(sold out) a location rather than packing the customers on nodes and degrading performance. We’ve taken the experience of exclusively running the largest games in the world, as well as 18 years in managed hosting and applied it to making a great product. And unlike one of our competitors, we haven’t left our hosting customers high and dry with previous businesses disappearing in thin air.

Don’t get me a wrong, I’m quite a fan of Vultr already. My biggest knock would be your website design. Don’t rip off your competitor — get your own original design…it’d go a long way in legitimizing the business. :)

I has similar disk problem when I tried to install my own ISO. If you believe your ISO is good, and then try to deploy new VPS, switch around server type; try between “Performance” or “Large Storage” server. You may find the one which work for you. If your ISO has many installation options, then try another option. If you deploy the server which does not work, destroy it after trying, so you will be charged only 1 or 2 hours of rental for that server. Is it cheap? Hope this will help.

I get them cuz they’re inside choopa and just a few hosts away from an efnet server. So i paid for 10 months at $2.50 / month. theyre probably decent, trying to compete with digital ocean and ubiquity?

  30. I loved Vultr until they suspended my account. Apparently someone hacked into my box to send spam mail. Vultr then turned my service back on in order to allow me to remedy the situation. I completely wiped the domain that was being used to send the spam. I woke up this morning and my account is completely suspended. I was praising them to everyone I know before this happened, as the service was astounding before this.

They allow you to upload your own ISO. They do not offer phone call support, but they reply your email pretty quick. I recommend to use their services.

Paid for “SSD KVM VPS” on 23rd Nov US$5 by PayPal. I received a request for Additional information and provided a photocopy of my Passport and the Transaction details for my PayPal payment. I can login to Vultr.com, but can’t access anything or open anything. I’ve continually expalined that by e-mail to the “Support Department”, and finally when I could get no sensible help, I requested they provision my VPS OR refund my money. It’s now 27th Nov, and I’m still waiting with growing annoyance.
Doesn’t engender confidence in this business, when they just take forever and still can’t solve a “Simple” Support probem??? It’s NOT the US$5….. but I feel a fool paying to be aggrivated!!??
