XenVZ - £23.94/6 Month 768MB Xen/OpenVZ VPS

XenVZ Via this WHT offer. XenVZ has released its insane Giga VPS offer — a big VPS at bottom low end price. For £23.94/6 month (£3.99/month or USD$6.50/month) you get:

  • 768MB guaranteed memory. 1536MB burstable (OpenVZ) or swap (Xen)
  • 20GB storage
  • 150GB/month data transfer
  • OpenVZ or Xen + custom panel

UPDATE: Xen plans have all been sold out according to XenVZ.

You have to use this link to sign up, and coupon code WHT111209-1. Servers are in London, UK. XenVZ, part of OpenITC has been frequently featured here. Sean has been running a tight shop there and I still enjoy using my 99 pence/month OpenVZ VPS from them. Well I’ve moved the wiki here at VPSLink, but having a UK VPS does help when you need some quick Top Gear fix from BBC iPlayer :)

  2. Have to admit that the “we are unfortunately unable to provide any support with these products” phrase is what concerns me. No money back guarantee is offered either

But yet they promote themselves as “we won’t make you pay a set-up fee nor will we make you commit to a 12 month, 6 month or even a 2 month contract” and “we have a 100% money back guarantee”

They may be known to you folks but this is the first I’ve ever seen of them and they don’t look too good with such mistakes in their copy.

  3. I can fully understand the phrases on absolutely no hold hand support. These are completely non-managed, with no cost of support added into the price. The last thing you want to hear from the customer is “so how do I install Apache on this thingy??” ARGHH!!!

    @LEA

Yeah, I know how that goes. Support is soul-draining and often unnecessarily expensive so I can see why hosts want to be strict about the unmanaged part.

I believe with this price you really can’t expect too much.

IMHO, I don’t see that as a mistake in the copy. I trust that someone who are interested in their offers would read the desription thoroughly, including the disclaimer that they specifically added.

For those who need the no-contract with money-back guarantee, I’d think the best way is to visit their website and subscribe to the plans listed on the site.

  6. Hello,

Dave & Sean here from XenVZ.

@drmike – You’re right to be wary and with the number of hosts out there that will leave their customers in the lurch when their services fall apart but that isn’t the case for us.

The reason we don’t offer support on the Giga/Nano VPS is for the simple reason that we make virtually nothing off these packages – we use them to promote our brand and if we don’t put these disclaimers in, we will get questions e.g. asking why Apache isn’t installed by default. This does not mean we do not provide support – we will promptly fix anything that is wrong at *our* end. With any issues not relating to our own setup we try to help out where time permits via our forums.

In short: The reason we are able to run this special offer so cheap has been highlighted by LowEndAdmin – We do not run the software inside the VPS for you.

As for moneyback guarantee on these offers, this simply isn’t feasable for this particular special offer.

Please notice we also have the following text on the same page (on our website, admittedly we have missed this from our forum post – which we will correct for next time):

“We occasionally have promotional offers that have differing refund policies but these offers are rare and are clearly labelled. Everything else is covered by our 14 day, no quibble guarantee.”

We do have a lot of copy and it can get confusing. We like to show the terms for our standard packages and highlight the differences any special offers may have.

We don’t spend much on marketing – it’s almost all by word of mouth and through our special offers, hence the reason you probably haven’t heard of us before.

Can you please update this offer stating we have sold our for Xen packages and Giga VPS is now only available for OpenVZ?

    Thank you!

  8. It has been 3 months since I got my Nano vps (a promotional offer) with XenVz. While it is perhaps the smallest vps in the world (with merely 32MB Guaranteed RAM), it has been very stable for what I do, with good system and network speed. Support is also very good.

I signed up and got my VPS within 15mins or so. Figured for £3.99/month whats there to lose. Support was very quick and the VPS has been working fine so far. Mine is on a 100mbit port and speeds are pretty stable all day. Haven’t had time to fully try out their control panel yet, but it seems to be functional for the few things that I did use it for. All in all very nice for the amount paid, just wish they provided 32bit OS images as well.

  10. Matt — I am using a 32bit Debian build for my nano VPS so I think it should be available. Maybe you can check rebuild option at the control panel?

  11. Matt:

Lowendadmin, I suppose they do offer the 32bit OS for the OpenVZ packages. I opted for Xen which doesn’t seem to offer the same variety of images.

Regarding top gear. It would be fun to read an article about hosting different kinds of vpn’s and proxys on a low end box.

I second Andreas, while using a SSH tunnel and firefox is usually all I need, it sure we be nice if I knew how to route other traffic through my VPS(video games, etc).

Also because I was pissed off that my VPS can upload at 10MB/s but only allows 350kbps per file, I started using ffmpeg to convert divx(mostly tv shows) into flvs which I could then instantly stream from anywhere without needing to download the entire file. Hope they don’t mind the additional CPU usage :D, also sometimes I just split the file into 6 pieces and download all at the same time so even though each piece is going at 350kbps it maxes out my home internet at 2MBPS. I would be interested in hearing how other people deal with this issue.

An other VPS related article I would be interested in would be how to setup fluxbox(or any window manager) and VNC the right way on my VPS(currently I have tightvnc and fluxbox, it works but not great since I have 2 virtual X servers running).

I really like the idea of having a VPS in the UK since I believe the latest Top Gear episodes are usually available on the bbc website before they hit the torrent sites.

  15. Maybe all the UK cheap VPS companies should thank BBC and Jeremy Clarkson for flood of business?! I only watch it when I have time (which is getting rare). Another one that I watch is Doctor Who. BBC iPlayer is great and pretty lag free for me :) And no I don’t use torrent…

As of setting up VPN, the easiest would be ssh SOCKS4 with a socks client on your desktop. I use Dante if you are on Linux/Unix box. You can also do VPN with tun using OpenSSH. Or OpenVPN.

  17. Hi drmike – unfortunately we ran out of Giga VPS very quickly. It seems that VPS with lots of memory are very popular with Xen taking the lead over OpenVZ.

Although OpenVZ wasn’t as popular to begin with, it’s hard to tell if uptake was spurred on by Xen running out.

  18. Hi cling[y],

350kbps per file sounds very wrong – we do not limit or shape network traffic in any way.

Are you using Xen or OpenVZ?

Please contact us for support if you wish us to resolve the issue, though it is most likely outside of our control (such as bad routes between your ISP and ours).

Use SSH tunneling and do a Google for “WideCap”.

I use it at school for RDP and VNC.
